Legally its because of the Ukraineans constitution not allowing it and the criteria in international law for that being over ridden not being met. Moraly/logical because sending a bunch of men with guns into an area to chase off anyone who dosnt agree with you then holding a vote isn't how referendums work.

Crimeans wanted to leave Ukraine because the Maidan regime started implementing policies restricting use of their language and they were scared of violent organizations like Right Sector that called for the killing of Russians. Meanwhile the KLA wanted to leave Serbia because they're an extremist terrorist organization that hates Serbs and likes human trafficking.

The man said they didn't see any Russian soldiers on the streets when clearly there was. What he really meant was he couldn't identify any Russian soldiers due to the fact that they had no insignias to prove they were Russian. Also it would explain why the unmarked Russian soldiers left when the observers showed up to Crimea. I feel it's part of something larger.

Вы действительно такой глупый человек???? Российские войска всегда были в Крыму. По международному договору в Севастополе. В связи с переворотом и нестабильной обстановкой они были усилены. А те военные на улицах - это бывший "Беркут",который остался без работы,вот и вся тайна)))) А то что одели их,дали оружие и кормят,действительно Российская армия, но это правильно,т.к. так спокойнее,чем ждать беспорядков.

The ones present at the elections and in the city around the vehicles were clearly wearing green and were unmarked besides the white stripe. They were Russians. Stop playing dumb.

Someone who CURRENTLY works at Vice should probably consider re-watching this series so they can maybe go back to doing this instead of trying to convince me to care about Action Bronson for the past 5 years. The weirdest part about it is that the changes they made seem to be a pretty obvious cash. I imagine the thinking is something along the lines of "let's be Buzzfeed but _edgy_ " however it seems that their old content was significantly more successful. Today I regularly see Vice post things on Facebook that literally get 20 likes in 24 hours, it's crazy. Why make worse content just for it to be unsuccessful?

Dan F Solh Also the burning of books in Ukrainian language, cult of Putin, the will to commit violence against people who are not afraid to be Ukrainian, showing strictly Putin favoured media, shutting down websites in their own territory in case of "provocation". They want to attack Eastern-Ukraine as well, because most of Crimea's clean water and electricity comes from Ukraine's mainland, some Russian soldiers were already captured in Ukrainian mainland who admitted that they are soldiers of Russian Federation. Putin wants a "Soviet Re-Union", even though his own words were that even thinking of that being possible would be stupid. Russia is the biggest country in the World, why aren't they developing their own country instead of invading others? The main argument for pro-invasion people is that: "the other guy did it too", we have a saying in Estonia that if a person puts his head in the oven, should you too? To make it clear - I am against all invasions, oppressions, wars.

Crimea has never really been part of Ukraine. Nobody knows what Nikita Hrustsov was thinking when he joined the almost totally Russian are to Ukraine during era of Sovien Union. Crimea+Russia = East Germany + West Germany. The best solution to solve this Ukrainean issue is made it a neutral state. Henry Kissinger has same kind of idea of "Finlandisation".

It's just that they don't have that many independent news media to base their information from.. Dozhd (TV Rain) and Novaya Gazeta seem to be the only ones left and they are being harassed. I keep on hoping Russians will see for themselves that they are being led to the slaughter by Putin and his clique. Nobody wants a Cold War 2, but it seems to be going in that direction. Mike Hazeleger That's why I condemn blind Russian-hate just as much as the koolaid some of these people are parroting from Russia Today, or wherever they get it. Honestly, the Russian people have had some of the worst luck in the world for the past two centuries when it comes to leaders. From greedy tyrants to "fascist" tyrants to incompetent tyrants...I don't know if they've really ever known good leadership. It sounds like a vicious cycle of misery to me.

What hell does act of separatism even mean? I just see a bunch of people leaving one cage to go to another.

Russia is 43rd on Global Education Index. 49th on Human Development index. It's 5th in crime rates and has one of the highest murder rates (10.2) among developed countries. Russia is 105th on Quality of Life index. It's 73rd on Environmental Performance Index. Russia is 49th on Innovation Index. Russia isnt even on the list for the Renewable Energy Index (makes sense considering most of its money comes from gas and oil exports). It's 122nd on the Industrial Production Growth. It's 33/50 on the Social Progress Index. It's 160th on Corruption (first being least corrupt). Those are just a few interesting numbers showing just how "better" it will be in Russia for its new citizens.

And Ukraine is worse. It is the most corrupt country in Europe (Russia included), it has the worst performing economy of developed countries and average Russian has three times higher salary than Ukranian.

D3adtrap That was not the point. I was merely trying to provide the contrast to what other side is hoping for. Most semi-educated people can tell Ukraine is much worse in most socioeconomic sectors than Russia. But I was not trying to compare Ukraine to Russia. I was trying to compare Ukraine's potential of going toward Russia, versus them going toward EU. Ukraine itself is a very broken country. Revolution was for the people, but the ones benefiting are the power-hungry and corrupt. But if they manage to fix it and eventually become a part of EU, they will be the true victors, not the Crimeans living as part of Russia.

Crimea wasn't just gifted to Ukraine, it was necessary to because Crimea was connected to the Ukrainian SSR. This was affirmed by multiple friendship treaties and the Belovezha Accords of 1991-92, the Budapest Memorandum of 1994, the Russo-Ukrainian Friendship treaty of 1997, Treaty of 2003 and so on. One of which was overseen by Putin. So Crimea is infact Ukraine, and Donbass is too.

I had friends in Crimea who had little green men come to their doors and tell them that they were building a voters' list. Then they would ask my friends to show the little green men (LGM) their documents/identification that would allow them to vote. With that I.D. in the hands of the LGM, the LGM would ask them which way they intended to vote. When my friends said that they would vote to stay in Ukraine, the LGM refused to return their I.D.s. Because the LGM were armed, there was nothing that my friends could do to get their I.D.s back and so they were unable to vote.

Ukraine is 77% Ukrainian. Crimea is by a large margin Russian. So if they want to he a part of Russia, it's their right under international law. A country should determine it's own fate without interference. Why is it so hard to just give Russia the Crimea? And why won't Russian supporters just leave it at that? Why want more? Those who don't approve over where they are should move . Simple. And Rissia should take care pf those who reject Ukraine. Why should the Ukranian goverment support them? Is it really that difficult? And why was the referendum illegal and the Scottish/English one not? What happened to the notion that governments should support and respect the will of the people?

Yes, usually VICE is good like that but this time I was surprised to see them have such preconceived attitude "You don't really want that. You were brainwashed by the commies." which is unacceptable in unbiased journalism. Of course that situation is tricky but at the end of the day what people want is what matters.

thats 1%. Isn't it stranger how democratic voting can be manipulated so easily? Stalin was ""voted"" to be in charge, but it was later discovered he had lost, and the person who counted the ballots was lying, then 30 million people died because of it

As much as I dont think Russia is the answer but if its what most of the people want then they should become part of Russia. I was not for Obama but that dont mean he shouldnt be my president.... and as long as everything goes peacefully then I hope western countrys dont stick there nose where it dont belong.

These sorts of actions are illegal for a reason. It would be quite easy to invade another country, blast propaganda then hold a vote to claim more land.. Mexico could do it easily stating that there are many 'native speaking mexicans' in Texas.

Gary Sanders Mexico wouldn't do it because then the US would just straight up annex Mexico completely. Just something to consider. I for one enjoy the fact that America has such friendly neighbors.

Iain Colledge I'm from Estonia and I know how that the referendum was strongly influenced by S.U. at that time. People had two options: 1) you will vote for joining S.U. 2) you will be deported to Siberia +everybody had to participate because gunman made you.

The thing is many of these people that voted weren’t even Crimean and were actually Russian citizens so what do you think they’re gonna vote for

People vote for what is best for them and their kids. Cit does not matter. The us and Europe have exploited Ukraine and used it as a billionaire atm for a long time. If we had given them a better deal or if they had paid them better when western corporations hyjacked assets after the maidan we would have them. If the us wanted to be good to them they could have let them become the 52 us state…it’s no further than Hawaii and way more valuable.

True picture of ownership: While in Oxford, MS, I had seen numerous photographs of the American civil war (around 1861 - 1865). Common sense dictated that any war fought a decade earlier may well have been well photographed. The Crimean war (1853 - 1855) fought between Russia and allies of Turkey, as in Tennyson's poem was also well photographed. It wasn't annexation: Who owns Crimea? a small piece of land jutting out of the peninsula of greater Ukraine? In 1783 Catherine the Great , Queen of Imperial Russia and an ethnic German, sent her colorfully dressed army and military to liberate the original capital of Rus, village of Kyiv. The actual reason was to create a whole new land called CossackLand. On advice of her generals, she decided to create a country called Ukraine (Ukraine means suburbs or outskirts of the Russian speaking lands) instead of calling the whole country Cossackland. She also attached the smaller peninsula called Crimea to Russian province in 1783 or 1791, as Crimea was predominantly Russian speaking back in 1791. In 1954, the province of Ukraine had won a diplomatic coupe: 1) In 1954, Khrushchev went back to his office in Moscow at midnight, drunk, with his driver, and wrote an office memo, saying he is transferring Crimea from Russia to Ukraine,. Body guard and driver: "This transfer of Crimea by office memo isn't legal enough", said his driver and bodyguard, both ethnic Russians. (2) Soon after, within 1954, Khrushchev convinced the Soviets to transfer day to day administration and salaries of the mayor and staff working in Crimea from Russia funds to Kyiv funds. Salaries came from Kyiv instead of Moscow. Now, this was a diplomatic coup. So, now both sides could claim to own Crimea, and this may have some justification. Americans are sweet talking people who, the world remembers, took over the western hemisphere from the native Americans. so, the average American politician, people like the guy to the right, says, :"If our American forefathers could take over America from the native Americans, why shouldn't the Ukrainians take over /Crimea from Russia on a false claim?". so, both sides are right, in their claims, in my opinion. In 1991, Yeltsin asks few town hall employees of Crimea who worked between 1956 and 1991, "Where do you Crimean Russians get your salaries from?" Answer "We three municipal employees in Crimea get salaries from Kyiv". So Khrushchev was very subtle in the Soviet transfer of source of salaries of municipal officials and admin officials of Crimea. Yeltsin to his 10 secretaries, "Now I have pay royalty to Ukraine. Town hall salaries of Crimea used to come from Kyiv". What does all this mean? That Russia's claim to Crimea is legitimate.

Chechnya does not want a referendum becouse they had one years ago, but only 3% voted to separate and why would they want to separate if Chechnya is thriving in Russia!

The question if Crimea citizens were intimidated by Russian soldiers or other authorities. It does not seem so. Of the people of Crimea want to control their own destiny and if that is with Russia so be it.

@@antona.1327 i guess it all depends. For any country it is against tbe law of the nation to succeed. America for example succeeded from England. They had war. Then the Confederate South succeeded from the Union and a civil war ensued. Personally i think war sucks. Everything should be done to avoid it. Referendums and a civilized vote and fair vote is a better path. A similar thing happened in Canada where a referendum was held in Quebec which almost separated to become an independant nation. The seperation vote was 49 percent in favour so Canada almost dissolved. It is still an issue.

Well, my friend, you should try first. I was living in Russia for 20 years in Cyprus for 5 years and in Spain for 2 years. And couple of years in different Asian countries. And i can say there is not something as a dull county. When i was young i was thinking that Russia is bad country but when i returned i understood that Russia actually really good and interesting county to live in.
