Crime Beat: The Deadly Contract | S5 E8

January 16th, 2006, started like any other for Jack Beauchamp. The financier grabbed a coffee and went to work in his downtown Calgary office. Minutes after he arrived, he was fighting for his life. He was shot six times and left for dead on his office floor.
Follow along as senior crime reporter Nancy Hixt shares the story of how grieving co-workers helped police identify a suspect. And how the case took an unexpected turn when evidence pointed to someone else.

I hope the family is suing the Calgary police. He called and told them he was getting threatening emails and the cop said the way it was worded wasn't enough for them to do anything. The police should of asked for the emails and gone over them and contacted the killer. They were clearly threatening emails....who cares if they aren't correctly worded. Seemed like the cop just didn't feel like doing anything

The POS cop advising the eventual victim about the ‘wording of a threat’ was beyond useless. The cops who investigated the murder did an incredible and amazingly thorough job. So the question is what kind of culture are we? People can be assholes, send harassing emails, make veiled threats and what? Nothing? They get away with that vile behaviour? Are we agreeing as a society that only when you are murdered do you warrant the attention and help of the police? It’s massively inept of lawmakers to not address IN LAW the prior behaviour of criminals, the cries for help from the victims or any other incidents that a reasonable person would deem worthy of follow-up. But we vote for who represents us. Again, for you to posit, what kind of society are we?

They kept receipts, go shopping together in Walmart( Walmart will get you every time), wear a distinctive jacket that he is known for, the shooter stays in the same outfit after the murder, only without his beard, drives his Hummer by the building, threatens the victim by phone and email and keeps incriminating correspondence. The shooter practically had a flashing sign saying “look at me.” Talk about Dumb and Dumber!! The second judge was completely wrong in her rulings. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it is a friggin duck! I mean, everything came together regardless if it was circumstantial. Canada has no justice system; we have a criminal system that rewards killers with a slap on the wrist. Life should mean life, not this ridiculous parole after 25 years. It’s just so odd that a strange man (ie non employee) could access the building so easy. I used to work in the CIBC tower downtown Toronto and there were 3 controls. First you needed a fob to get into the elevator area; Second, if anyone extra was in an elevator who did not scan a fob all elevators would stop/stay open and security would have to check us all, there were scanners on the elevator doors that counted the # of people; third - once you get to the desired floor you can’t just walk in to an open office space - there are further locked doors that you need the fob for. All fobs were provided by the building security services with strict protocols and sign offs by company executives allowing an employee to have a fob - so every fob was assigned to specific individuals & they could trace us throughout the building. It felt safe.

Unbelievable…same evidence given at both trials , there is definitely something wrong with these Judges whom I think need training on a lot of these laws. Officer Fontaine who took the call was absolutely wrong about the law. Deer could have been charged then and there but perhaps Fontaine was getting near the end of his shift and didn't want to be bothered to write up a report, or who knows why he lied and said the emails weren't specific enough? And you could hear in his voice and his clipped, nasty way of answering that, no matter what Mr Beauchamp said, it wasn't going to be enough to lay charges. So Fontaine was absolutely wrong. No need to change any laws, just the police who apply them (or don't bother to).

There was no doubt they'd be found guilty. If Jacques Beauchamps wasn't threatened, I don't know what it was. Those two are where they belong. And, considering their age, they might never get out. Much too late, but out of the way. This murder could have been prevented, however. Big time. My condolences go to his family and friends.

Epic failure by police. They said the emails didn't constitute a crime before the murder but they charged Deer with criminal harassment after the murder for exactly the same emails. Laziness, incompetence, disinterest, lack of training... Very typical response by the Calgary police, in my experience.

Oh yes!!! Brilliant!!! Sherlock Holmes, stand aside!!! They failed to charge Deer with criminal harassment before the murder when it might have prevented this tragedy. They said the threats weren't specific enough. They appeared to be specific enough to charge Deer AFTER the murder. Same emails. What changed? I hope Officer Fontaine remembers this every day of his life and asks himself if it was right to lie to Mr Beauchamp when he called for help with the harassing emails? May Mr Beauchamp rest in peace and may Officer Fontaine never find any,

They said they couldn't charge Deer for the harassing emails before the murder but they sure charged him after, for exactly the same emails. The charge was criminal harassment. Had that been done before the murder, it might easily have headed off this tragedy. Epic fail. Alas, typical of Calgary police response to complaints. Indifference, disinterest, mininformation....

Great police work???? Great police work would have been charging Deer with criminal harassment when Beauchamp reported the threatening emails instead of after the murder. They were the same emails so they clearly were chargeable when Beauchamp reported them. It may have saved his life.

You best remember that yourself! Nobody owes you a d a m n thing! You grossly overestimate yourself I see... This man had made a thing for himself and his family! Nobody can hand that to you, you have to do it for yourself! Nobody's coming to save you! Everyone has to work hard to get where they want to be! You can only rely on other's for so long before it gets old real quick! Especially when the ones getting the help are unappreciative! Basically you have to qualify for a mortgage! You're not entitled!

I hate these tall buildings with their airless elevators. We must trust that they will work correctly. No fresh air in these buildings, just enclosed offices and people fenced into carpeted spaces. Like chicken farms. Everyone has their allotted space. I would never have an office in one of these buildings. Impersonal, but with cameras at every turn. So that part is very personal. Imagine living in one of these things. No outdoors, no grass, just soundless carpet and a view from the air. Horrible.

I hope the family filed a civil suit against the police. Also, has there been any reforms with regard to these incidents. How seriously should a threat be taken at first reporting. Why does the victim have to meet death before anything is taken seriously.

Yes, nothing about the emails changed after the murder, yet police saw their way clear to charge Deer with criminal harassment for them The officer on the phone sounded combative, argumentative, confrontational, closed to discussion or explanation, almost acting as a defence lawyer for the author of the emails. He locked his brain on one thing and nothing would have caused him to pick up a pen and write a report like he should have done. The threats clearly constituted a crime, at least after the murder.
