Former minor leaguer here, many of these plays are rather common, with only a few as above average. The editor of that video has a real small idea of what great plays are, especially with a main focus on infield plays. That said, if you liked the double play, check out the triple plays, the home run saves, and the longest home runs, they will blow your mind.

You're right these are good plays but none of them should be on a video titled MLB Greates Plays. Where's Wllie Mays' over the shoulder catch or Dave Parkers no hop cannon shot from deep right field to throw the runner out at 3rd, just to name two plays that were better than any of these

The throw from third to first is about 35-40 meters depending on where the 3rd baseman is located. By the time the 3rd baseman gets the ball the runner is half way to first so he has to make a fast accurate throw. What is really impressive is when the third baseman is moving away from first and must spin around to throw it back the other way. Imagine that instead of a normal approach, the ball is gently lofted close to the bowler who has to catch the ball and immediately bowl it now matter which direction he is facing. Oh, and the distance between the wickets is 40 meters instead of 20.

I used to coach high school baseball and other than batting practice, the #1 activity during practice was taking ground balls. By the time a MLB infielder reaches The Show they will have taken enough ground balls in practice over their lifetime up to then that numbers in the hundreds of thousands. They don't think about what they are going to do, they react and muscle memory takes over. They are all taught to expect every batted ball to be hit to them and they already know what they are going to do with the ball.

We had Brooks Robinson {r.i.p.} His nickname was "The Human Vacuum cleaner" Brooks collected nearly anything within a 10 foot radius it seemed. he was awarded 16 Gold Gloves for his defensive plays through his career at third base. Higher than any player at any position except for for Pitcher Greg Maddox who has 18. More than even Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente would possess. Robinson set an AL record by leading the league in fielding percentage for 11 seasons. His career fielding percentage of . 971 was higher than that of any other third baseman when he retired. The thing that makes throws from third to first so common in this highlight reel is twofold. First, there is ALWAYS a runner going to first, and it is always a force out opportunity, so if the ball is hit that direction that is pretty much always the play. Second, the timing is tight both on the reaction to the ball being hit, as well as on getting the ball to first before the runner. This leads to some remarkable displays of athleticism in an effort to get the ball there faster.

A lot of balls are hit toward third base because the natural swinging motion of a right handed batter tends to send a batted ball that direction most of the time. Since most humans are right handed you see a lot of hits to the left side of the field.

Each defensive position requires a distinct skill set. For example, a third baseman needs quick reflexes because the ball is often hit at him at lightning speed. A third baseman also requires a cannon for an arm because most of his throws are long, across the field to first base. All the fielders wear gloves that are specific for their position too.

3rd Base is called the "Hot Corner".... especially with a right-handed batter. The ball gets there so fast. It is already the longest throw in the infield but to make it more difficult the 3rd Baseman's momentum carries him into foul territory (even further)... plus he is facing away from 1st and he has to pivot and throw a huge distance.

This might be easier to remember if you notice that home plate is a thin, solid structure with the top set flush with the ground, while the three bases are several inches thick and have some give to them. I saw only a single triple play in this video. The most amazing play I ever saw was accomplished with out any great deal of extreme athleticism but was so rare that I think it has happened only 15 times in the history of baseball. What I saw was an unassisted triple play. The team at bat had runners on first and second base with no outs, the strike count was 3-2 and the runners were running on the pitch, not waiting for the outcome of the batter's swing. The batter hit a line drive in an almost direct line to the second baseman who caught the ball for the first out. The second baseman almost casually reached out and tagged the runner going from first to second base for the second out. Then the second baseman made an almost leisurely walked over and tagged second base before the runner could return to the base for the third out. The team at bat went from no outs and two runners on base to 3 outs and an end of the inning in one swing of the bat. Absolutely AMAZING!

The down the third base line deep turn and throw is on there a lot bc it's a hard play to make, and having the movement speed to not only get to the ball but to get rid of it (accurately) just as fast to make the out is what's impressive. Think of it like this you are running one way to get to the ball with all your momentum and then must somehow throw the ball behind you across the field in the opposite direction you were running, and it all must be faster than a batter can run 90ft (slightly over 27 meters) to 1st base...

One nice thing about Baseball compared to, say, American Football, is that it's relatively straightforward and intuitive to understand. You could sit down right now and watch any random game of Major League Baseball and be able to (mostly) understand what's happening. Yes, some of the particulars might confuse you a bit and some of the nuances will go over your head, but after a few Innings you'd know roughly how the game is played, what it takes to score, what it takes to get on out, how Innings work... all without needing to consult with someone who's more familiar with the game. The reason you see so many throws hit towards third base being caught and thrown to first base for an Out is that these are some of the longest throws that a Fielder is forced to make, and they have to throw it immediately and with a lot of precision, or the throw is going to get to first base too late. Basically, they have to make a 45+ meter throw in the time it takes the runner to go 13-ish meters, and the ball has to arrive close enough to the first baseman that he can catch it while maintaining contact with the base. These plays are often decided by centimeters or fractions of a second, so they make great highlight-reel fodder.

i mean you could make that argument with american football too. neither sport is really that beginner friendly to someone from outside of NA or its cultural sphere of influence, they’re pretty culturally alien from most other international sports. Ice Hockey is probably North America’s easiest sport to understand on an intuitive level, and that’s mostly due to the lack of rules compared to other sports. It really only has 1-2 rules that might possibly explaining(icing and offsides)both of which have parallels in other existing sports so even then you likely can figure out what’s going on, and everything else like penalties is pretty self explanatory. Baseball has things like tagging up which without someone explaining the rules to you you’re never going to be able to figure out what’s going on there. Not to mention the pitch clock etc which has now complicated the game. Overall it’s just not super intuitive. GREAT game though. So much nuance and skill that goes under appreciated.

An easy rule of thumb for determining if a runner can be tagged "out" is this: if their foot is on the base (and, in the case of second and third base, STAYS on the base), then they are considered "safe". For first base, it is possible to be considered "safe" even if the runner's foot is not on it, but only in the event that the runner has successfully reached first base, touched it, and ran straight ahead (as opposed to rounding toward second base); the straight-ahead run indicates that the runner is only taking the single base, and this only is possible on *first* base.

4:07 Also keep in mind that for the first baseman to commit to a play like this, he risks the ball getting by him and the runner advancing to second base, which just makes these plays even more impressive. The safer option for the first baseman in that case would be to step off the bag and receive the ball but conceding the out at first.

It's really cool to see a cricket player reacting to baseball plays. Not sure if you know who Jomboy is but he's an American reactor who essentially started out reacting to baseball clips, got into cricket, and introduced a lot of us to the sport vis his reactions to that sport's clips. I just like the symmetry happening. Also, I don't think it was in this compilation but you have to watch Ken Caminiti's thrown from his knees to first. All time great defensive highlight.

The throw from 3rd to first is a lot longer than it looks so those down the line grabs and tosses to get the runner out at first are pretty imnsane. Just to get the ball on target w enough velocity to beat the runner is beyond impressive.

The tagging of a baserunner for an out can happen under any circumstance. The baserunner is out as long as he's not in contact with any base. But getting a baserunner out by the fielder touching the base while in possession of the ball can only happen if the baserunner is forced to run to that base, as in the batter running to first, or a man on first running to second on a batted ball. That's a "force out." But tagging the runner for an out is mandatory if there is no force, as in the case where there's a runner on second with no one on first, and he attempts to take third base on a batted ball. That runner must be tagged out before touching third base.

  • @a-damthemansixtynan4463
    @a-damthemansixtynan44638 ай бұрын

3:50 What you're explaining sort of depends. So in this particular play, the fielder's only way to get that runner out at 2nd was to touch him with the glove/ball. There are forced outs in baseball but they only happen, for example, when there is a runner on 1st. If the next batter drives a ball up the middle, then the 2nd basemen will tag his base to get the runner out, then throw the ball to 1st to get the current batter out. They're forced outs bc you literally have no way to go. If you are a runner on 2nd with no runner on 3rd, then you must be either tagged out or they can tag your base after a pop fly if you leave the base.

  • @ryan_lloyd

The throw from third to first is so big because you have to field the ball and throw a laser 127' before the batter can sprint 90' (you're allowed to overrun first base). You have very little time to go from fielding the ball, adjusting yourself into position, and making a crazy throw with incredible accuracy (if it's off, your first baseman might have to get off the bag to get the ball and the runner will be safe). Baseball is an insanely *quick* sport. Pitchers are throwing 90-100 MPH, batted balls can reach 120 MPH, and most players have a great sprint speed. Anything in the infield totally bang-bang.

  • @AndyZach

It's great to hear a cricketeer's perspective. The major leaguers are supremely good at fielding. Yes, the 3rd base gets a lot of hard hit balls, since most players are right handed and they seek to pull the ball, that is, hit the ball in front of the home plate. That gives you the most power and it sends the ball to the left. The 3rd base position is called 'the hot corner'. The shortstop gets as many, playing in the gap between third and second base. What impresses me about cricketeers is they field well with their bare hands or thin leather gloves. Also, there is no foul territory, so the batsman can run on anything. Or not. I understand the batter doesn't have to run to the other base. Originally, in the 19th century, baseball was played with thin gloves too.

Thank you! Yes this makes perfect sense. The fielding ability of pro baseball players astonishes me. On average, the level of fielding in pro baseball is greater than cricket in my opinion. However, there is good reason for this... in baseball, tagging a runner out is a much more common (and necessary) occurrence than in cricket (we call it a run out). Absolutely am loving baseball since I've started watching. What a sport.

Another thing about those balls hit right down the foul line at third, without the play being made, those balls were likely to be doubles - the hitter would make it to second. Second base is considered scoring position, so it's quite the play to get the out instead.

It is trivial but we only call home plate the "plate". First, second and third are always referred to as "bases. I enjoyed your reaction and here are just a few observations for a lifetime baseball player/fan. The long throw from third base is certainly one of the most spectacular plays from 3rd but the is another great play where the 3rd baseman is called on to charge a slow roller and typically barehand the ball and throw out the runner at first. The longest throws are from the outfielders. Right field is where you want the strongest arm to throw out runners at Third base or going Home. Centerfield is also called on to try to cutdown runners at the plate. Pretty rare is the. triple play, you might want to check them out.

The only time when you don't need to tag or just step on the bag/plate is when it's a force out. Force out is when the baserunner doesn't have a place to go but advance a base. For example: 1) Batter hit and he has to run to 1st base. The defense just needs to step a foot on the 1st base bag to register an out. The difference between baseball and cricket is that when the ball was put to play, the batter does not have the option to not run. 2) Of course that also applies when there's a runner in 1st base and his teammate was able to put the ball into play. The 1st base runner must advance to 2nd base to give way to the batter coming into 1st base. He can opt to stay but the defense throwing the ball to 2nd base will automatically give an out because both the baserunner and the batter cannot occupy 1st base at the same time.

Playing third base is scary. The ball is hit to you so quickly. it also has the longest throw (never a problem), and the weirdest perspective toward the first basemen (important). All these plays the third baseman make look nonchalant have such greater accomplishment than the same from any other position on the field. Only the pitcher (I was both, and CF too) has scarier balls hit at him, and that's because you have even less time to react (about 53 feet vs 95 feet), but you're not in a proper fielding position after releasing the pitch. Also, a pitcher can take one off his head. I remember playing SS one game when the regular SS was out, and the manager made a comment, and I told him, "Shortstop is a vacation compared to 3B."

I played a lot of positions growing up, but in high school, I played on first base for a couple of years and third base for a couple of years. The crazy positions you see the first basemen putting themselves in to make the play are unreal...and why I preferred third base. IDK about at higher levels, but in HS the pressure was on to do whatever it took to catch throws from the other infielders. Especially the bad throws...which were most of them since we were 15-16 years old. lol Ever since I got off of first, I've had a great appreciation for what first basemen do. A comment about the rules concerning tag out. If a runner is off base and has no other choice but to advance towards a base (so if a runner hit the ball and is running towards first or if there is a runner on first and the ball is hit and he has to run towards second) then the fielder can simply touch the base while in possession of the ball for the out. If the runner does have a choice on whether or not to advance (if they decide to steal the base or if the runner is on second and there's nobody on first when the ball is hit) then he has to be tagged with the ball for an out.

You sort of had it right about being able to tag the runner with the ball or ball in glove, or get the ball to a defender touching the base before the runner reaches the base. Tagging the runner who is not on a base always works for the defender to get an out. However, in some circumstances the runner is forced to run to the base (like the batter to first base after making contact) or a runner starting at first base is forced to run to 2nd base on a bouncing ball before the batter is possibly throw out at first base. Also if a runner starts at any base, say 2nd base, and starts to run to the next base or past the next base on a fly ball which is caught, they have to return and touch 2nd base after the ball is caught for at least a moment, before advancing to the next base (even if there wasn’t a runner at 1st base or 3rd base at the start of the pitch in the case for a runner at 2nd base). So if the runner was to run to 3rd base, 2nd base just needs to be touched by a defender with the ball in their control before the runner gets back to 2nd base for that runner who started at 2nd base at the start of the pitch to also be out (in addition to the batter for hitting a ball which was caught before the ball touched the ground). For this reason the general rule for a baserunner at first base with 0 or 1 out in an inning is to run to 2nd base on a ground ball, to freeze or retreat back to 1st base on a line-drive that might be caught until you known it won’t be caught, and go partway to the next base (also called tagging) if it’s a fly ball that might fall to the ground, and take off to the next base or back to the starting base once you have a better idea of whether or not the ball will be caught right before it lands. And if there are already 2 outs in the half inning, a runner at first should run to 2nd base on any contact by the hitter because if the ball is caught, the inning is over right away anyway. There is no chance of being an additional out on the bases if there are already 2 outs in an inning. Typically the hitter is the easiest one to retire for the defense. For young kids under 6 or 7 years old playing baseball, these base-running principles can be very difficult to communicate. 😆 But they are a big part of the game.

Home plate is where the batter is standing. The other three are bases. Double plays (two outs) are fairly routine by professionals. I would guess two or three per game on average. Triple plays (3 outs) are much more rare. Maybe two or three per season across all teams. An unassisted triple play (3 outs by one player) probably happens about once in ten or twenty years.

  • @longaugust

The crazy part about those throws from the 3rd basemen is how hard and how accurate they are and how quickly the fielder transitions from the stop to the throw. It is quite a long distance. I would also recommend watching "outfield assists" to see more strong, accurate throws. An outfield assist is where an outfield "throws out" a runner attempting to take an extra base off a hit. Some of these outfielders have incredible arms and just the threat of them out there could make a runner pull up short on a hit they might otherwise try to take an extra base on.

They didn't show any instances of what I consider to be the most incredible play in baseball, the unassisted triple play, where one defensive player fields a ball for one out and then gets two additional outs from runners already on base. There have only been 15 of them in the entire history of baseball, much more rare than pitching a perfect game. I was actually watching a game when a triple play occurred. The second baseman, positioned between first base and second base, caught the ball and instantly tagged the runner going from first base to second base and then practically jogged over and tagged second base before the second base runner could return to it. It was all so quick and smooth, he made something nearly impossible look effortless. The unassisted triple play, look it up.

Baseball has the 4 bases 1st 2nd 3rd and home plate. You have 13 players minimum because of player rotation for actual positions: pitcher/catcher, first second short-stop, then right outfield left outfield. (Short stop stands between second and 3rd base this is because the second baseman may need to leave the plate to be closer to first base and acts as an outfielder at times.) You can get 4 balls and walk to first base. You can hit the ball and run as far as you can make it. If the ball is hit and goes over the fence between the lines it’s a home run. Sliding is legal on all bases but first. First base you are allowed to run straight through or hit and turn you can not slide to first base. All other bases you must constantly touch them or be within range of touching them you can’t run past them. To get someone out on a base you need to have your foot touching and the ball in hand prior to the opposition reaching and touching the base. If a player never touches the base it doesn’t count as them being out and they can retreat to the last one. You can also get people out on base by tagging. Often times the touch of the base and the tag are done at the same time just to really cement that the player is out. Sometimes you’ll get a moment where the base players throw the ball back and forth to try and get them to move or step off base or try to steal a base. Players can have to stand on base to be safe but they’re allowed to take a lead/few steps off to get slightly ahead or steal if they’re off the plate they have to be tagged. The two long white lines are the out of bounds marks. If someone hits a ball and it flies over the white lines it’s considered a foul ball that’s been hit- meaning it’s in play. If a player of the opposite team catches the foul ball in the air it acts as an out. (A lot of time a foul will pop up hit the fence/chain and ground by the batters box and mean nothing the batter has to get ready for the next pitch as the foul counts as a ball not a strike. - you can have someone hit it have it be a ball way in the outfield by going over the line. If that happens the batter need to return to the plate to redwing unless the ball is caught making them out. Anything inbetween the white lines is absolutely fair game. Most of these plays were very basic you may want to search for say Baseball hall of fame moments or impossible moments. Catching the ball is always the point of the game so people with extreme jumps or reach or sprint speeds are cool. A funny way to learn baseball is by watching the worst baseball moments or most hated plays/mistakes on the field. Figuring out why it was upsetting or how the players did it wrong, usually helps show you the rules or how different that moment was to normal plays. The funnest vids are probably the bee swarms or unfortunately the bird…. On occasion the ball can be thrown and hit a bird or a ball is hit and hits a bird. It causes confusion and a pause in the game as suddenly there’s an explosion of feathers and silence…

The play where you didn't see what happened was that the batter hit the ball directly at the man who went down, but he caught the ball in his glove. Players are often injured when a ball is hit and they are unable to either catch it or dodge it.

You have to remember that these guys are the best baseball players in the country. Many of them make TREMENDOUS amounts of money. And if they don't hustle, there are plenty of guys in the minor leagues ready to take their place. So they make damn sure they do a good job. There aren't any lackadaisical players in the major leagues.

One Sunday morning I turned on the tube and stumbled upon a cricket match between two countries I forget who. I figured this was my opportunity. I sat and watched a game that went on for 4 or 5 hours, forget how llong I watched, it felt like forever. It was late afternoon when I threw up my hands in surrender. After all that time, I still didn't have a clue about what was happening, why sometimes they scored and sometimes they didn't score, The points kept racking up, but I didn't know why. No,no. Don't offer to explain. I've devoted enough of my life trying to figuring out cricket. Even if I finally understood it, I couldn't bring myself to care.

14:30 It is common when you have a right handed hitter at bat, because they are in the left batter's box and the bat swings towards 3rd more often then not if they swing a bit early.

I'd love to see you react to triple plays, they are very rare in baseball, usually only once in a season or two.

South Africa's national baseball team is actually fairly decent, best on the continent although they don't have any competition. How about you give them a shot?

That's actually pretty interesting. Despite being a sports fanatic from South Africa, I didn't even know our baseball team was okay. Hopefully the sport gets more traction in the future in Africa.

Just a cminor orrection: the word "plate" is short for "home plate" and should not be used when referring to one of the three (first, second and third) bases. Bases are also often called "bags" as in "his foot was on the bag."

Tech tip as a Pitcher.. If you throw the ball low and left to a base stealer..., The runner has to decide if they want to be tagged out with a glove, or an 80mph ball. XP They usually hate getting tagged with the ball.
