Clearly you haven’t rode one lol. I had a 2021 for a year. Absolutely the worst bike I’ve ever owned. This obsession with reliability is so silly. All these modern bikes are great. Period. And your not traveling the world. If something breaks and it never does by the way , you fix it. So think logically for a second. Would you rather have a bike at this price point that can’t ride comfortably on a highway or any road really , can’t go up a slight hill and maintain 45 mph , has zero excitement or punch in the motor , all the time. No matter what those are facts. Or for the same exact price something that can do all those things are far far more but someone on the internet who also doesn’t own one told you they break down. Even though you can’t find a single actual video showing that to be true. What is wrong with people lol.

I don't think she covers all of the maintenance of the bikes on her series. She covers some yes but hardly ever published stuff that would be seen as negative (smart on her part). As a Himalayan owner I can guarantee she DID not rack up that many miles on those two REs without a crap ton of maintenance and replacement of bad/broken parts. LOL

@@sys-administrator yeah. While I agree that pulling the entire engine apart for that repair. For a bike that's spent it's entire life off road and going through rivers that's not really all that major. I'm not trying to argue, it's just my opinion that for a bike this cheap it's not a lot of maintenance.

I've got a 701. On the whole..I love the bike., but it's not the most reliable bike. And, being in Colorado and going over those 12,000 + jeep mtn passes...if/when I drop the bike...it gets heavy.

I have come to conclude that it is dumb when youtubers are riding and talking about a topic because they think they have to ride for it to be interesting. Its even dumber to be riding and talking about a bike that you are not even on when you can do the video like you are doing.

Love this video so far. I thought I'd say here, for those on a significantly smaller budget. Hyperpro makes a "combi-kit" that is ~$300 and comes with stiffer progressive springs for the fork and shock + thicker oil for the forks. Is it as good as having an entirely new shock/racetech kit? No it isn't. But it is still significantly better. If you can't justify spending ~$1k on suspension, then it's something that I'd look into, really easy to install too.

Thanks for the video Jake. I have really enjoyed watching you work on the 300.

This is why I'm keeping my 99 DR350SE. It has the adjustable suspension from the dirt model, is lighter than the DRZ or 300L, has long maintenance schedules and has more power than the 300L. Has pretty nice torque down low. Just hit 16,000 miles on it and it hasn't let me down yet. Would definitely love to have fuel injection though.

This has been an awesome build series

As a 450rl owner im glad to see a 300L owner not absolutely thrashing our bikes. Although, I do wish more good info was out there. No the maintenance intervals do not need to be every 600 miles, I and plenty of other 450l owners have sent their oil off past 1200 miles with absolutely no issues whatsoever. As well as there are multiple 450ls out there with 30k plus miles that are still in perfect shape. Not hating on the 300 though, I just don't think there is any comparison.

I couldn't help noticing during one of your ride clips I could hear your tunes, something catchy from Cyberpunk 2074. Good video. ;)

KLX300 owner here. You're correct, it's basically a dirtbike based off the engine and frame just detuned for emissions.

Itchy boots proved how reliable the CRF 300 Honda is! I love my CRF 300L! Light and crisp for a 66 year old rider!

I mess with my suspensions settings all the time. It a game changer depending on your ride. You will remember how many clicks you need to do when adjusting your forks. It’s so nice to run it softer when going to the destination. Your motorcycle will ride way nicer for the road trip.

Was a bit worried about the power of the 300l, but after doing 60km on highway and another 140km on the first day riding, I can say its an excellent bike. I'm 95kg / 1.90cm and the only mods it really needs to be perfect are rear shock and bar risers. Its an amazing machine.

Yeah I probably had similar into my drz. I love modding these things.

I know I have said this before but when I started riding motorcycles, I'm thankful that I listened to the veteran dual sport/single track racers at a local Motorcycle club. A proper suspension setup will make you a faster rider, was general consensus among the veteran racers. Also tires and brakes were the next recommended changes before any engine mods.

Great summary, I'm looking for a 300l as a bike for easier trails, short commutes and exploring for which my bigger ADV is not so much suited. I do not mind the softer suspension or "weaker" engine, as those small cc bikes are still a blast to ride, what my Monkey taught me :)

From a maintenance standpoint coupled with its versatility, it is hard to beat the 300L. You can spend less than $6k for similar results or even more if you go all out. I shopped around and found open box parts like my Flatland skid and radiator guard and saved around $70. Also got Rally Raid Level II ($2,000) for more usable travel and adjustability but a K Tech/YSS rear shock and Racetech spring/Gold valve kit ($750) will be best for most riders. Got CBR300 cams and intake boot on Revzilla for around $90. Ordered a Thai ECU from Bikerzbits for $79 and that saved me $75 for an ECU core charge from 550 Performance. Moto X full stainless exhaust was $230 and is a 1:1 of the FMF Powercore if FMF made one for these bikes. If you take your time you can save a good bit of money.

I will add I think one of its biggest strengths is that its okay stock, but there is a massive aftermarket already so if you want to mod it for more performance over time its perfect for incremental gains. If you want to go for all out performance stock, get a KTM and open your wallet a little wider.

FWIW, I sent my front & rear for my 250L to Pro Action (in Pittsburgh) and they rebuilt it for my weight/riding style, and it makes a huge difference!

Have taken my dr350 on 2500+ mile trips. Have had to fix shift drum on the road and little things like that but thats part of the fun of a trip. My friend was on a drz400, the other people on our trip were on a dr350s,dr650,crf250 and wr450. We went mostly back roads and trails. For true adventure riding its not about the bike it's about how you use it. I recommend anyone getting into adventure bikes to start light because if you go for a 650 your gonna have the learning curve of off road riding ontop of having to deal with a heavy bike. There are plenty of 1500 to 2500 biked to get you started and into the sport.

I think they’re aware of me. When I put out a video saying “Honda where’s my crf300l?” It showed up two days later. It had been in a port for over three months just sitting there. And they sent a whole truck with only that bike on it. The dealership said they’ve never had a truck drop off just one motorcycle before. It’s always a handful. Anyways they don’t seem to want to talk to me though. Reached out a few times and nothing. But they work with a bunch of other KZreadrs. 🤷‍♂️

Why I love my WR250R. Tall seat concepts means all day riding comfort. GORace suspension upgrades (similar as to what Racetech would provide in parts) and crash protection with a little enrichment tuner to not have it run stock lean. Reliable as dirt and capable in all scenarios with a huge grin factor.

Agreed, the WR250R is still among the very top in this class. Shame they stopped production, but it is a fantastic bike.

That was a really enjoyable video to watch.

I've enjoyed watching your build and mods series on this bike and seeing it evolve to overall a much better bike. I agree that Honda could and should have done some of the easy modifications or upgrades and just chucked a few $$$ on the ticket price in the first place. Please try and get it dyno'd again though before you do the 350cc engine build, as many of us want to know if you did unlock the CBR300+ bolt ons rear wheel hp figures? If you can't get it to say 29-30bhp on the dyno like a CBR makes, then fair enough we can say it was a waste of time and money. But if you get there I reckon it's been worth it for the journey as much as anything else.

I love my 300l I did the yoshi exhaust,550 tune and the DNA air filter along with a 45t rear sprocket made a HUGE difference from complete stock form..

I have a kawi 300sm and have similar mods you got and can say it definitely wakes the bike up...still can't compare to even a 250 race bike though like a yz250f/fx.

71mph but it's pretty buzzy so I haven't been over that but it makes the bottom end really snappy on take off

Got my first KTM a year ago a 790 Duke and despite all the hose leaks/replacements, thermostat housing gaskets leaking and horrible off throttle jerkiness, because of running too lean from factory (fixed with a RBE fuel controller) I still love the character of the bike and how it performs. If it didn't have as much character as it does I for sure would have sold it after the first leak. I can see why people don't want to give them a go because of the most simplest of components fail so often.

The bikes are really great to ride and I can see how people will put up with the price and the silliness. But man I just haven’t been able to justify it yet.

Pretty neat you did all this. I sometimes wonder if I should dump suspension money and other stuff in my 'humble' xt250. But I have a Husky501 for trail ripping, but if I wanted something reliable I wouldn't hesitate to ride my XT across the USA. Its 19hp slow, but very bulletproof.

Your 501 is reliable you just listen to KZread comments, I've see them with 20k miles without a valve adjustment on long service intervals.

Great vid. Really looking forward to the upcoming engine mods. Mine will be staying at the 1.5 tune but it will be interesting to see what can be done.

@@luke3892 I am. With the cbr cams, boot and the airbox opened up, a better filter, moto x exhaust, it pulls way harder everywhere. Stock form it would fall on it's face at 9000rpm, now it pulls to 11,000. Recommended!

I got the rally and like any bike with mods it all depends on what your use cases are and your riding style is. I agree with the comments re: suspension as the only real needed mod. On the road the front end dives way much when cornering and off road you lose a lot of travel to static/rider sag. I did a YSS spring upgrade in the front and replaced the stock shock. Made a world of difference and was pretty cost effective. Other than that add protection and replace the handlebar are the other things I would recommend as the next thing to address.

I think you should bring the supermoto Sunday series back and that should get you more views. It’s what I enjoyed the most. Also I’d love to see you get a KTM 690 and hear your opinion on it. I upgraded from my DRZ and as much as I miss the DRZ, the 690 excels at everything.

I had a 250L rally and I didn't like it. Suspension too soft, lazy power, heavy. Plastics and such constantly breaking. Your 300 seems to solve those issues pretty well. I bet it's a joy to ride. I especially like the radio / comms setup.

You convinced me to get a 300l now if I could just find one out in the wild 🤣

I have owned WR250R, WR450F, Ktm 690, DRZ400. Now i have a EXC500 and couldn't be happier. 40.000 km so far without problems. Peolple say there is so much maintance, but that is only for racing.

I was looking at getting a 300L but I ended up getting a Husqvarna fe350s which is more of a dirt bike than a dual sport. Yes it has shorter maintenance intervals but what you get from jump makes up for it with adjustable suspension, lighter weight and is more oriented for the riding I like to do and it can cruise just like the 300L. Plus I got the Husky for less than a brand new 300L, yes it was used but with less than 200mi and was owned by a 78yr old guy it was absolutely pristine in every way. I am still looking to get a 300L because I like having 2 bikes to ride and I can teach a few of my buddies to ride and that’s what I like about the bike, it’s easy and approachable for new riders and I think it’s the best beginner bike out there because riding dirt makes a better street rider if someone chooses to go that route.

when you do the 300 L suspension front and rear Ktech change the gearing install a lithium battery exhaust and ECU and the proper tires. This bike is amazing to ride and it’s quiet very reliable no issues.

Great build, I have a klx 300 that I have performed similar build I also put in a 331cc big bore kit which definitely placed it more into that dual sport category with extra torque and hp for those longer trips! It would be nice if Kawasaki and Honda could make these bikes 350cc from factory!

I don’t think I would’ve spent the money he spent on it.

I always find it intriguing that people put the KTM 500 in the same class as say a WR450. Its actually a capable cross country bike and many people have done it. On paper it has a "high maintenance" schedule but in reality it doesn't. I'd recommend a lot of people to research this. I use to think the same.

Yeah, the service intervals on the enduro bikes from ktm are for people that actually compete in hard enduro. Not the ones just putting around on gravel roads or chill single tracks. But still people be like ”uh gotta change oil after every ride and swap airfilter after a ride in damp conditions” sort of, u know what i mean

You mentioned the KLX300 and now I wanna see you hot rod one and do some classic garden snake tomfoolery with it some day. Lol. Or even hot rod a KLR650 and turn one of those into an adventure supermoto some day. I'd do it but I just bought a Honda Monkey bike and figuring out how to install a big bore kit and turbo on it. Lol.

i am planning on buying one this year and do some basic essential upgrade. suspension. ecu. exhaust. i do want bags and such but are less important.

Man it’s funny to hear how hard it is to clutch that thing up. My kx450 will just throttle up in 4th doing 40-45ish no problem. But that’s the difference from a hardcore mx bike and a reliable do everything bike

I bought a 250L new in 17’ wish I did more mods to it cause I’d probably still have it. Suspension and gearing would have made that bike. I blew out the rear shot within the first year. Ended up trading it in for a new klr650 in 18’. Still have it.

Fun to mod bikes if you got the money but always gotta be careful to keep it reliable

I highly recommend Seat Concepts it’s definitely the most comfortable dirt bike style seat I’ve ever had

Got the “tall” Seat Concepts on my DRZ ….. niiiiiiiiiiiice.

i have a 2020 drz400E cape york edition i paid $8k aud ($5612 usd) brand new in the crate. it's street legal and the cape york kit added at no extra charge suzuki bash plate and radiator guards made by force accessories, suzuki branded barkbuster ego hand guards, protaper henry/reed bars and grips, pirelli scorpion enduro tyres, enduro exhaust baffle and cape york edition stickers. additionally i've added a 28l safari tank second hand but unused seat concepts seat good used $150 b&b offroad chain case saver, rear rack and luggage plate hammerhead +20mm shift lever. and the 18 year old staintune exhaust off my previous drz, staintune exhaust is now an optional extra through suzuki for new 400E stock suspension sprung and revalved for me by jay foreman factory suzuki race team manager for $900 aud ($631 usd) all up cost is $10,110 aud or $7,100 usd total it has 43hp at the wheel i use it daily the longest trip was equal to riding across usa 1.5 times except it was through outback australia and across the simpson desert.

Broken Bow here, you need to come back to K Trail before it's gone. My Rally has made it a few times but monetization is taking everything, especially our trails.

For the same price you can run a bone stock ktm husky 500 and if you just change the oil on those and give them a little fuel they are rock solid reliable

Man I’ve been on one a few times but would really need some time with it to have an opinion. But for sure it’s similar to all the other plated enduros as far as maintenance and how far I’ll be willing to ride one.

You just convinced me to buy one. Massive purchase for me.

I was going to buy a 300L but they where impossible to get at the time so I ended up getting a 2022 ktm 350 excf. This is my first non Japanese bike and I know what you are referring to. They have some "interesting" designs. I have had it for a year and so far I love riding it but it does keep disappointing me in other ways. For how expensive they are, they sure cheap out on some basic stuff. there's about 6k in mods and I do not even have supermoto wheels. The thing is really close to being as powerful as a 450 MX bike though. So fun off road and can even rip the dunes.

Just like the CRF250L was dumbed down from CBR250R 26hp spec to only 23hp. The 286cc of the CRF300L was dumbed down to only 26.5hp from the CBR300R 31 hp spec. Just use the CBR300R ECU with some stage one mods and enjoy about 33 hp at the crank. A low cost YSS rear shock with rebound damping adjustment can easily solve the comical noSHOWa rear suspension work.

I love my 300l. I use it for everything from street riding to hard enduro. I have a full racetech suspension, cbr cam swap, cbr intake, twin air filter, modded air box lid, full yoshi exhaust, charcoal canister delete, warp 9 mx wheels, and a 550 stage 1.5 ecu. I slapped cheater tires on my stock wheels for my hard enduro setup. I personally think that the 300l is as close to a perfect duelsport platform that you can get. The only letdown is the fact that the subframe isn't removable.

@jahredalmonte7945 I'm not sure how much faster it is over stock, but there is definitely a big improvement in the entire rev range. All of the mods that I have done have been a necessity for my weight and riding style.

Ive been watching itchy boots videos and it looks like a good all around/entry level dualsport. But im wondering how the highway performance and general 50/50 performance is if you are a 200 pounds male with 100+ pounds of gear, essentially maxed weighted bike ?

I have a stock 300L. I'm going to leave it that way. I ride with a couple friends and we use comms. Aftermarket exhausts are way too loud. I had a 250L with full FMF exhaust, even with the Q4 it was still annoyingly loud. We ride mostly logging roads so it works great for me.

Well the exhaust part depends, in Germany you're only legally allowed to put an exhaust on which isn't louder (give or take 2dB) than the original one. So if you get a proper slipon and leave your cat and dbKiller in, it shouldn't be louder than stock. But it could have a nicer sound profile or tune. On my cb500f, a huge chunk of exhaust rattle disappeared and I could hear the intake after swapping my muffler out with a Mivv gp.

I bought a new ktm 500 and put 6000 into that. Kinda wish I had the crf300 but could never find one. The ktm is nice but deep down I’d feel better if I had the crf

how do you like the ruroc helmet. I currently have a klx300sm, ducati scrambler urban enduro, and indian ftr1200, what should I look at next.

I’d like ya to put on just a 15T sprocket on the front see how that does I hear it’s fantastic especially at highway speeds it lowers rpm on top end with out sacrificing to much bottom end sounds like you got plenty down low to spare so why not it would make a great video that’s cheap to make

Mr. Jake, my cb500f's got adjustable suspension (though only preload if I know correctly). I have no idea how to adjust it, can you help?

ive never been on a single that I wanted to do hwy commuting or any long distance on, given a choice

Yeah I hear that. With this 300 it’s oddly smooth. It’s still at like 8k rpm’s but it will deal with it all day. Still I’d rather be on my fz. But if you put up with it and get it out there you’ll have a way better off roader.

ive had teh KLX250/300 and they are sleepy but good engines, last a long time like the honda.

Jake, how about a “stock ECU and 91 octane gas vs. 550 Performance 87 ECU and 87 octane gas?” I have a new stock 23’ you can use to do the test. Heck then a 550P 87 ECU vs. 550P 91 ECU.

I made the same mistake pissing away 4-5 grand. I sold my CRF300L rally after all the work, bought an orange bike, I never been happier. Even after all that work, it wasn't half the bike I have now.
