CRF300L Big Bore Installed with Ported Head
Installing the Big Bore Kit on the CRF300L or XR301 if you will. This take the engine size from 300cc to 301cc!!! JK, kinda. The stock real size is 286cc and this 2mm bore brings it up to 301cc. May not be a huge bore and kit's do exist that go bigger. But Ari Henning worked with JE pistons on this kit and this is the size you want to go if you want to maintain reliability. Larger kits will end up with lots of slap in very little time. This kit also takes the compresion from 10.7:1 to 11.5:1 which is also a balance of power and reliability. Could go higher but Ari says this is the sweet spot. But wait there's more! Because I also have a Race Tech CNC ported head with Takegawa cams too. ALL THE POWER HAHA or at least a bit more than before.

I won’t ever own a 300l but it’s very entertaining to watch regardless. And I do appreciate that future 300l owners looking to do things like this will have good quality footage from someone who actually knows what they are talking about. My biggest peeve in life is watching a video recorded 15 years ago with a potato to figure out how to fix my bike lmao

Congrats on being the first person to big bore a CRF300l! I can't wait to see how this thing runs and the power it puts out. It could very possibly turn it into a unicorn bike.

Thanks for the content recently found it and been enjoying it greatly so thank you!
one small step for the engine one giant leap for the bike. Great video sir.

Wow! Such an amazing job with that honda! Can't wait to see it shred!
This video literally couldn't be more perfectly timed :D I'm rebuilding the engine on an old 81 GSX400f and thanks to this vid, I think I know what I'm doing slightly more.
When rebuilding a top end, take the opportunity to fill the engine with oil via the rocker box. This ensures the valves and chain are well lubricated prior to starting. Cranking without the spark plug to prime the galleries and bearings is also good practice.

Good idea. I actually turned it over about ten times by hand and could actually see oil weeping out around then plain bearings on the cams. Was very 😊 when I saw that.
Excited to see the end product. Not gonna spend this much time on a 300 but still love the build.
You're legend Jake, love your work and especially your sense of humour and.... that motor looks great. Bring it onnnnnnn
I LIKED THIS VIDEO REAL HARD!
Been watching for years thank you for the amazing content! I feel your pain, been waiting 2 1/2 weeks for some vtx parts, but it’ll be worth it when it’s back up and running.
Great content. Thorough and informative for the masses! Appreciate you and the dedication to the platform.

Always cool to watch you build stuff Jake. You explain things in a really friendly way and easy to understand. Thanks!
Great video Jake. I'm a little late to the 301cc party but about to join.
I liked how you did this assembly. It's not a how-to it's just you Jakesplaining The process. I'm looking forward to seeing the results. It would be interesting to see you do your own head to head with some of the other comparable bikes and their performance compared to your bike. Obviously the time to do that would be once you completed Your tuning and whatever break in that you chose to do. Thanks for the good content.

Sweet!
excited to see what the butt dyno thinks! I want to do something of this sort but i know the sourcing of the engine parts and extras would be a little overwhelming. I wish Honda would just make a crf500l or something along that line. I love my 2016 Rally Raid cb500x but it's still 430lbs(maybe more now with the bashplate and other things). I enjoy the power and feel if it was lighter weight it'd be unstoppable. NOt the highest performance but I would trust this bike to 100,000 miles right now and take it anywhere, dirt, street, highway.
Nice
Now get it in the bike!

I have a cbr300r motor I decked and ported running on a power commander I had dynoed at 30.7 hp. It’s pretty peppy compared to the stock 250r I started with and sounds nasty with just a tiny straight shot muffler

I love you and all of your content but it drives me crazy every time you say Ari's name incorrectly... otherwise, keep up the awesome work!
I think I'm gonna go 301 also. I broke the left case at the engine mount on a big g out. If I got to tear into it I may as well make it better. Do you have a part number for that piston?
So did you not have to adjust valves at all? Is this a bucket lifter or finger follower style?
@TheGardenSnake
Жыл бұрын
Sorry I forgot to mention that. Ari me this head all freshened up. The valves were dead on spec and verified it when it showed up. And they’re more like finger followers and also kinda a rocker.
So are/did you have to retune the ECU again to make it run right/optimally? Does that require another Dyno session or is there downloadable tunes available?
@TheGardenSnake
Жыл бұрын
Yes and yes haha I have flashed the ecu again with map that should get me in the ballpark. And I will need to get it dyno tuned. All of that is coming soon.
No double checking ring endgaps? As much as I would love to have someone do my ring filing, I'd sure as hell double check them.

@@TheGardenSnake Glad to hear man. Been burnt too many times by supposed good machine shops. Always worth taking the extra time to double check things. 🤙Sick build man. I'm on the fence on a KTM 690 enduro or finding a CRF300L and doing a similar build. Very different bikes and KTMs got me a little shook on reliability from past experiences. Honda has never let me down on the other hand, and the journey of the build is half the fun. Hearing great things all around on the 300L
What's your take on why Noraly's (Itchy Boots) 300 crapped out in Mauritania ? My guess loose wire connection.

@TheGardenSnake
Жыл бұрын
Million dollar question. The 300 is such a better do everything bike. I wouldn’t want to sit on the highway all day on a 450. Even if they can put up with it it’s not fun. Hard to explain unless you’ve done it but it beat the hell outa you. Vibrations and noise gets to you. The 300 will do that all day and whatever else you want without a care. But have I messed up that reliability? Time will tell.

I really do enjoy wrenching and these projects. And I’ll put more riding videos out soon. Just needed to finish this up. I will say though riding videos do very bad these days for me. Could be people’s interest, could be KZread not liking them then suppressing, could be people just don’t like me like they just too. Probably a bit of all three. But when I put lots of riding videos out the channel suffers.
