Green Arrow was my introduction, in 1985, to steam preservation. It had it's boiler re-tube done at Dairycoates in Hull by the Humberside Locomotive Preservation Group (HLPG). Had to thread cut the 43 large flue tube holes in the fiire box and then file the 121 small holes circular to fit the small tubes. All the bottle ends had to be machined on site and welded to the large flue tubes. Many weeks of voluntary work done on site whilst running Sir Lamiel (777) and Black 5 5305. Happy days.

Went to the 1973 & 1974 open days. About 20 class 87's in mid construction. Those were the days. Queue to get in was about a mile long though, heaving with people. D200 is obviously the star here.

I remember going to Crewe works open day in 79 and the queue was the same. And in 87 same again with the queueing and the class 40s were in the scrap line very sad site and class 90s and 91 under construction.

11:15 an idling 40...the sound of my childhood my grandparents lived 50 yards from railway embankment and they would stop at the signal for up to 20 mins idling like that...a loop of that sound would send me to sleep in 2 mins!

Seems strange watching this video now knowing that 70000 Britannia and 60532 blue Peter is now based at Crewe, under the auspices of icons of steam, looking at 5972 olton hall in green, instead of the hogworts livery it carries today

I remember Green Arrow being unloaded from the low loader. As it moved from the transporter to the level track, the driving wheels inevitably sagged into the angle. The brakes locked on. With it unable to move in either direction, the only option was for someone to crawl underneath with the Big Spanner and disconnect the brake rods, while people outside levered things around with a balk of timber or two. The driver then commented "Yes, it did that when they loaded it too".

Remember going to that openday , though sadly lost my list of what was there. What was going on at 14.27, the guy with the trolley ?

Sad to see the brush 4's in those appallingly tasteless paint jobs, you can't call them liveries. Give a two tone green any day.!!!
