Crew Cabin Tour On A Maersk Cargo Ship | Life At Sea

Life At Sea In The Merchant Marine Aboard A Cargo Ship
Ever wondered what crew member's cabin looks like on a cargo Ship?
Tour a crew cabin board a Maersk container ship / cargo ship. Junior officers and unlicensed crew members have similar rooms on this ship, just on different decks. Senior Officers and the Chief Steward have larger rooms with adjoining offices that create much more living space.

    I lived on an aircraft carrier for 3 years a long time ago. I was curious about cargo ship accommodations, so I looked up and just watched several. I want to thank you for doing an excellent job. You went slow, paused the camera when necessary and explained what I was seeing. Amazingly there are other vids with a lot more views that did not do any of this. Also, thank you for not overdubbing your video with useless, loud, goddamn, MF music. I do not understand why people feel the need to ruin real life videos with MF music. Excellent job!! 10/10 BZ!

    In all honesty, I completely agree with you about the music. 99% of the time, it’s music a cannot stand. But even if it was music I love, it would certainly be music someone else wouldn’t like. I get the need for music in certain types of videos. But for stuff like this, you’re totally right - unnecessary. We’re here to learn something. Just speak clearly and focus on why you made the video (why we’re here) and everything will turn out quality. This guy makes some really informative videos and I really appreciate it. There’s a couple other guys that I also think make some damn fine videos on the subject. They use a little music every now and then, but I don’t think it detracts from the quality. You might want to check out Joe Franta and Northwest Sailor.

Fascinating and humbling of where these people are, how they work, and the fact it is not that easy. I watched one of your videos that went from top to bottom and all that it entails. We do have central AC and heating. The engineers determine when the AC or heating is turned on but each cabin has an overhead damper to regulate cabin temperature. Yea the accommodations on these cargo ships are actually really nice. There’s usually only around 22 of us on there so plenty of space to give everyone a decent cabin.

    Basic but so much more room than a cruise ship cabin. If your staff you can have two or three to a cabin half the size of that. I’d much rather sail on a container ship any day to a cruise ship because you have so much room in your own personal cabins.

    As I don't speak English, I didn't understand everything. But is this room this big and the same for all the crew? What role do you have on board? (Google translator)

  • @BryanBoyle

    @BryanBoyle

    Hey David, this room is about the same size for all the unlicensed crew as well as the junior officers. The senior officers and chief steward will have larger rooms with attached offices for even more living space. I commonly sail as the Second Officer which is still considered a junior officer.

    True sailors do not say rooms but say cabins just like they don't say boat instead of ship. Have been to sea many years and as crew cabins go that is the nicest and largest I have ever seen except of course the Captain's or engineer.

    Yea everyone on these cargo ships has their own cabin. There’s only 22 of us so plenty of space for individual cabins. I worked one contract on a cruise ship and was fortunate to have my own room as an officer, but I remember most crew was as many as four to single cabin.
