Creek Fishing Tips for Catching Jumbo Creek Chubs
Спорт
In this creek fishing video, I go on a quest to catch big creek chubs using live bait. I provide tips on tackle and how and where to catch them. I caught several chubs on this adventure, one of which was a hornyhead chub. Creek chubs make awesome live bait for catfish and northern pike, and supposedly, they’re delicious to eat.

The fish you weren’t sure about is also a creek chub. They grow those bumps on their heads during the spawn. Dad called them horned dace.

Interesting, thank you. I believe it's a male hornyhead chub. They have those red markings and bumps on the head during the spawn.

its a red tail chub, red tail minnow.
I love wading small creeks for monster chub in the summer. I usually block out a couple of days to do it. Your setup is pretty fancy. I just use a Dock Runner(heavy cover on several streams I fish) with a split shot, 8 hook, and Gulp Honey Worms because they last a lot longer. I found out the hard way that chub will tear up worms, plastics, and Gulp minnows faster than I can put them on. Make sure to take pliers because their mouths are very tough(and the slime smell on your hands lasts all day).

Thank you for sharing your creek chub set up. I love creek fishing as well. It's one of my favorite ways to fish. I've never used the Gulp worms you mentioned, but I might try them some time. Creek chubs are definitely more slimy than bass and other types of fish I've caught. They're aggressive little fish.
The chubs you were catching with bumps on their heads are red tail chubs. The best chub for walleye and small mouth at least in the upper Midwest.

One of these days I'm going to catch some and use them for bait.
I use these small soft plastic craws that are like a centimeter and at my friends neighbors house in the back has a beautiful small pond in the back and just by using a technique with creature baits I can catch a decent sized 7 in creek chub

Sounds like a nice spot to fish. The bigger 7 inch creek chubs are fun to catch. They're aggressive fish.
Im a month late but bread is good I caught 2 on a piece of bread but I was also chumming them up but they wouldn't even let it sit they were eating as soon as it hit the water

Nice catches. I've never used bread for creek chubs, mostly worms, but sounds like it works. Yeah sometimes it's hard to catch other types of fish with small baits, especially worms, when there are so many chubs around.
You ever get creek chubs where your at 12+ inches we caught a few 12-15 inches in our creek but we use them for catfishing I was thinking about keeping one as a pet to see how the interactions with other chubs and etc

I never measure them but I caught a chub in my recent multi-species creek fishing video that was pretty big. Keeping one in a fish tank would be interesting. They are aggressive fish.
Sorry if i missed it but what size hook for creek chubs?

I caught all of the chubs in the video with a size 6 Eagle Claw Aberdeen hook, but a smaller hook would work fine too. Hook sizes 6-10 are ideal for creek chubs.
Creek chubs I know have the bumps on the heads.

They do, yes.
I prefer meal worms. They like them just as much as eorms and last a lot longer

I'll have to try those some time. I know meal worms are great for bluegill. I caught almost twenty chubs in a new video I uploaded yesterday using a stickbait.
Creek chubs, or horny heads as we call them, are as good to eat as any other panfish.

That's what I hear. I might bring some home to eat this year. Maybe I'll do a catch and cook video.
You say sunfish, i call that a piranha lol

lol I don't think I'd be in the water if that were the case. The colors and body shape of bluegills and sunfish are similar to piranha.
@22:00 that kinda looks like a shiner/chub hybrid

It's possible, but I think it was a hornyhead chub.
