This one is gonna be a hit with the family, excited to get my copy! Edit: got my copy and my family loved it. We'll play with the shorter variant next time though.

Would you consider reviewing just the retail copies of board games? Right now it can be tricky to find out which components in a review can or can't be expected in a copy. For example the inserts are Kickstarter exclusive and the deluxe wooden bit upgrade set doesn't include all wooden bits. I think it would be more honest to judge a game in it's pure form.

Retail copies tend to be available much later than Kickstarter ones, which is why I imagine the reviews don't often use them. I hear you, though, not being sure what you get in the retail version is not ideal. But that can usually be checked before buying. Still better this way than having late reviews, in my opinion.

@@talkietoaster0 It is rarely straightforward to find out what's actually in the retail *and* what's available to buy. They're also either poorly balanced or *required* for the game to function properly. Crowdfunding-Exclusives are an actual cancer on the industry.

I agree with this so much, but I think games are often sent to them for review, and the companies like to give the cadillac versions to reviewers, or just do it because they don't have the retail copies available yet to give away.

we played a 4player today at PAX East and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Bought the game. The only change I will make in the future is giving everyone their own set of dice and have the action phase simultaneous. And turn-order issues can easily be resolved and you will save 75% of the game play.

Agree with the statement about age based ability in board games. Fossilis (another KTBG title) was a similar experience for me. I had to remove rules of the game (as described in the rulebook) to get it to my kid's ability. Unfortunately, removing aspects of that game resulted in a lackluster game. Because of that, I'm going to hold off on this one.

I really don't recommend this game. I recommend stone age. That is a far better worker placement game with no more complexity, but with tighter rules, more strategy, a slight engine. In this game, I see no reason to get points, there's no incentive and as Tom says, it's really long and has next to no player interaction. The bits which involve interaction are good, but the waiting time is really dull. I played with 5 players today and it took 3 hours. We weren't slow, but it was very slow, watching others to play. Yes it's pretty, but I don't recommend it.

Wow, 5 players. I almost always stop at 4 if a game says 5 - seems like it always makes games take too long, with occasional exceptions.
