Hey, I just wanted to say thanks! I'm in first year and just had my first week of university life. It was hell. I'm already behind on my work! Seeing your videos now makes me think that I've been giving myself a lot of excuses to not bother giving it my all. I totally understand what I really need to do now -- thanks to your videos! I guess what I'm trying to say is thanks for the reality check :)

The most important thing is to read first everything and underline the important and take notes next to the text, after this you should allow yourself to take notes! Otherwise you end up copying the textbook. I would also recommend to read your notes several times but, make flashcards afterward for the most important facts! The context is their in your notes but the facts you will learn by testing yourself over and over again

Id rather go through work everyday rather than pulling an all nighter that leaves me very tired on the day of exams. I guess we all have different ways in studying and not one traditional method suits everyone. But its nice to know you used the same method. :) Thanks for this video :)

write whatever YOU think you need to remember, but probably wont 2-6 months from now. As time progresses and your understanding of the topic grows, add more to it / reword things / remove things you have mastered. It could start with a bolded term and its definition. Then after a few days / week youve maybe read more or heard more or something clicks so you go back and redefine it in your own words or expand on the concept.

I also read research indicating that the optimal intervals most conducive to long term recall is: Day 1 First review Day 3 Second review Day 6 Third review Day 10 Fourth Review I don't know if the intervals apply well to medical learning though. Do you have an opinion on that ?

So do you type the basics, keep going through those, then edit the document and add more and more wherever it fits in? Or do you add it at the end so the beginning is the core and the last parts are the additional info? Your study techniques have totally changed everything for me, thank you! I was so inefficient before. The tip about making the flashcards questions that require real knowledge on the material is what did it.

A lot of the top performers at my optometry school started using PPT2One to import their lecture powerpoints (w/ notes) into OneNote, then exported all that text to Word to make the "core" you were talking about. Do you mind if I use you as a reference for a video I might (or might not) make in the future?

  • @dennisblewett5768

Condensation, in my opinion, is about summarizing things. It's like a string on your finger that is used as a reminder of some bigger idea, ideas, concept, or concepts. And from a small thing, you ABSTRACT from that small bit of information in an attempt to recall the complexity of details from that small bit of information. I often used notecards in my back pocket as a way to accomplish this goal. It's effective with practice.

I'll agree with you that sometimes you do not have the time to take notes. However, condensation reflects on summarizing things and abstracting away in order to enhance recall. It's a memory technique to enhance recall. However, I'll agree that sometimes you have an exam coming, there isn't the time to condense and practice recall, and things are "on the fly." In time crunches, a person is going to want to actively practice recall, in some instances, while attempting to learn the material.

Core Details.... reminds me of those old sit-coms & after-school specials where a student writes his 'cheat sheets' on his hand or sock to cheat on a test and finds out on exam morning that they don't need the 'cheat sheets' after all because the act of writing them seared the info into their head.

  • @ChrisBranleh

+Ike Haze Thats one of the draw backs to making notes on paper. I ran into this problem in Chemistry, where I initially wrote down what I needed to know to pass the exam, but wanted to continue to add on material to increase my understanding rather than memorizing the things I needed to pass. As someone mentioned, you could write notes on your laptop. This allows you to go back and edit without a problem. However, if you're taking a class that involves drawing structures or doing calculations, as seen in chemistry, that doesn't work very well for many people. In this case, what worked for me was writing notes on a blank sheet of paper, but saving a lot of space in-between topics. You could even go so far as write one topic for every two pages, that way you can add more material to it and have enough space to make the notes neat and organized, while accumulating more facts about the topic. Hope that helps.
