Creating a Murano charm | Pandora

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Murano glass has been a famous product of the Venetian island of Murano in Italy for centuries. Pandora glass charms are made from glass imported from Murano. The glass rods are of a high quality and the colours have depth and beauty.
A glass rod is heated over a torch flame until molten and wound around a specially-coated steel mandrel, forming the base charm. It can then be embellished or decorated using a variety of techniques.
As a characteristic of the production method, each Pandora Murano glass charm is unique and can contain small variations in the design, the colouring and the size.
The making of a glass charm is an extremely advanced process that demands extraordinary craftsmanship skills. A multitude of imaginative details can be created using glass: From polka dots and graphic lines to striking stone embellishments and three-dimensional effects, the beauty and bounds of this inspiration material are endless.

All Pandora beads are made in Thailand in their factory in Gemporia (yes, that's the cities name). You can see how Thai bead making traditions merged with what Pandora had in mind. The idea of using a silver core is a Thai practice. It keeps the bead from wearing down on the chain.

Annealing bubbles are great if you are going to batch anneal after in a kiln. I have had friends who have spent a large sum of money just to have the bead crack at a stress fracture and being blamed for dropping them (shame on you). That is why I now make their beads for them, they know they go straight from the torch into the kiln.

Annie Laura Hi Annie Laura, the PANDORA Murano glass charms are all produced by highly skilled and esteemed colleagues working at our modern and state-of-the art production facilities in Thailand. Each glass charm is individually crafted by hand and it takes 3-4 months to train a new colleague to create such a perfect charm. The high quality glass for the Murano charms are produced in the Island of Murano, Italy, then shipped off to Thailand for the crafting of the charms. To read more about why we are proud of the production facilities in Thailand, and why this in no way has resemblance to a sweatshop, please take a look at our PANDORA Ethics Report 2014 here: static.pandora.net/campaigns/pandoragroup/reports/PANDORA_CSR%20Report_2014/index.html. Best, Anne

Very pretty charms, but why is it called Murano if it's not made by Murano artisans? Murano glass doesn't refer to the glass but the craftsmanship of the glass artisans...

So, the glass is from Murano, but the glass makers are not original Murano artisans, but rather Asian factory workers who have been taught how to make these beads, earning a minuscule amount in comparison with the original artisans salary? Interesting. I won’t be buying any more ‘Murano glass beads’ from Pandora. In fact, I think I’m finished buying anything from Pandora.

I’m sorry, you don’t understand my frustration, because you have sold me a lie. The original Murano glass makers have been crafting their beautiful glass, and passing their skills from generation to generation to generation. YOU stole their skills for profit, even if you don’t steal the glass. The artisans in question are becoming fewer and fewer as companies like yours take their skills from them, and because your overheads are smaller, you and other huge companies put them out of business. They cannot afford to work for the money you pay your employees. Certainly, a majority of the original artisans left didn’t financially ‘benefit’ from this. Morally reprehensible.

Oz Lang i went to Venice less than a month ago and I saw lots of stores with beads that were not Pandora’s. I can tell you that I still bought Pandora bead because for me it was more beautiful and elegant. I like very simple things, and even tho other artists had very beautiful and storytelling details they were too much for my bracelet. Let everyone have an option for choosing their beads, and they are not stealing anything from them, as they are only making beads while artist from Venice make beautiful glass decorations in much bigger forms

It's laughable how they show a watercolor conceptualization of the bead, when this is one of the simplest dot beads I've ever seen. These are not artisan beads, these are sweat shop beads. People, don't be fooled by the term Murano that every idiot makes claim to lately. All they mean is that the glass rods are made (maybe) in Italy. Buy your lampwork beads from REAL artisans. Search out "Lampwork Big Hole Beads SRA" to find unique, handmade beads that fit your charm bracelets.
