Create Your Own Percussion Drum Set | Finding Your Own Drum Sound

Great Gift Ideas for Drummers imp.i114863.net/Gjzq5r
In many scenarios a drum kit is simply too loud for small stages, acoustic music or other low noise environments. Also the sound colors a drum kit offers are not always the right ones for the music you want to play.
In all those situations having an alternative setup with some nice sound options up your sleeve will solve the problems.
Percussion instruments are perfect for this exact purpose and there are close to no limits when it comes to assembling your personal percussion kit with your individual sounds.
Thomann was kind enough to send us some of their products - and here are some nice thoughts about how you can approach the process of creating your own kit.

being a percussionist is the best thing ever, you can hit whatever you want and use it as an instrument, you can literally get a bald guy, mic his head and add it to your set and somehow you’d make it work

I could play that set up for hours. I really like the engineering and creativity that goes into building this kit. I'm definitely going to start building one, let's challenge ourselves to make the most elaborate construction of sounds possible.

This is wonderful. Creative percussion for every situation is a must for drummers. If you have to play a quiet gig, don’t sound like a worse version of you because you can’t play soft.

I love my SABIAN 11" AAX X-Plosion Splash cymbal for my cajon hybrid set up. With hands or nylon rods/brushes, as the name states, it EXPLODES and is perfect for Cajon hybrid setups. If you wanted to have a minimalist hybrid cajon set up, use this ONE cymbal!

Hello Art Of Drumming! I know they’re not nearly as mainstream or popular as the bands featured on this channel, but I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see a video on the drum sound of Matt Mingus of Dance Gavin Dance, and in particular I’ve been stumped on the sound of their album Dance Gavin Dance. I love the detailed and fast paced drumming on that album and the punchy, high sound on it. I’d highly recommend it. I’d love to see a video on his sound and what he uses. Thanks! Keep up the awesome content!!

Every percussion kit video talks about live applications and then mics it like a studio. But I do appreciate that no processing seems to be being done here to deepen the tone of the snare or Lenten the transients.

in one of my bands we have ethnic flutes, hungarian folk cithers and bass. i use cajon. and i love it. one boundary mic inside, and don't need any mic stand. when i play the cajon its fine. but in the case of perc set with pedals i feel the cajon uncomfortable as "drum throne".

At the moment I am "building" a pocket drumkit with a 10 inches snare, a 16 floor tom used as kick, 8 and !0" rototoms, bongos, and I still have to find what I would use as floor toms for that.

Might be tuned kinda high for it but I was thinking of doing the same thing and using a djembe as a floor tom. Might look better than it sounds though.

  • @Eurodrummer666

@@benjamingaray5660 just be careful with that djembe if it has goat skin, drumsticks would definitely damage it, and rods won't be nice to it either. If it's plastic skin, I'll be fine.

From time to time we go through our older videos and simply clean up this channel. The production standard we had back then simply isn't what we do today and we try to create a different image now then we did back then. Those videos are still available on our platform. The bongo video for example is part of an in depth percussion course you can find here: artofdrumming.com/courses/latin-percussion.

Meinl and pearl make a cajon stand that clamps down on the top and bottom of the cajon. You could also use the flat top cajon that he used as a snare. But it think it might be quieter than a full-size one.

This is just my own personal preference, but I despise playing Cajon. There is no worse of an uncomfortable instrument ever made, hurts your hands, hurts your back, hurts your butt, basically hurts everything. F*** the Cajon, haha.

  • @MikeyLikesItt

Don't know why you would add a splash cymbal over mounting a cowbell!!! Especially for percussion setup!!! I love the video tho, Breaking it down from most simple percussion options to a very colorful, yet still simple and mobile setup!! Also stop saying small percussion and just say shaker!!!!!😂 I get sooo0000 jealous of percussion setups, Cuz all in all a traditional kit wins out imo, you can cover more genres that way, But who has the space for a decked out percussion setup as well??? I know you can have a hybrid setup, but it gets too big and cramped for my tastes, Having a separate setup with hats, bongos congas, timbales, various shakers and cowbells, cymbals, I druil over the possibilities, But for a home studio I can't justify the floor space and additional gear 😢
