Crazy Winter storms - Atmospheric River Compilation - Snow - Landslides - Flooding
Since so many people enjoyed the content from #buffalo lake effect snow, wanted to add a compilation of #atmosphericrRiver events in #california between 2016-2022. This includes the record setting January 2017 #winterstorm that dumped more than 10' of snow in places. #blizzard conditions from numerous events as well as #landslide, #flood and crazy #weather. #cawx Everyone kept asking me to compare the record setting lake effect event to something and it kept reminding me of atmospheric river events in California.
Atmospheric Rivers, also known as Pineapple Express is a weather setup in which a channel of deep moisture extending all the way back to Hawaii sets up over the West Coast. This causes flooding at low elevations, big waves along the coast and heavy snow in the mountains. When these events happen over burn scars they can cause #naturaldisasters such as mudflows, debris flows and land slides.
Video is comprised of a bunch of raw cuts without commentary or music with drone shots mixed in. #semi #trucks #travel #trucking If this does well I will do a series of these including Blizzards, Nor'Easters, Ice Storms, Southern Snow events and a crazy winter weather comp. Please feel free to make suggestions in the comments.
Special Thanks to @JonathanPetramala for his help shooting much of this with me over the years.

Thank you! They require chains but a lot of this was shot on I-80 after they closed it down. They do a really fantastic job keeping it open because it is such an important corridor but usually when snow rates get over 3"/hr and winds start blowing they can not keep up. It becomes nearly impossible for the average person or semi to travel. Thankfully California can not stop media if properly equipped so much of this was shot after the interstate was shut down. Vehicles used for this video were a combination of Jeep Wrangler and Toyota Tundra, both rentals.

Emergency supplies should be on board, clearing your exhaust area ( and front ) while stuck, clearing your roof top and lights. That chunk of snow and ice on your roof can kill someone behind you. It can slide off, then they can't see or they swerve to avoid it.
The slightest bad weather advisory would keep me locked in. You simply can't test the extremes of nature. Great video 📹 👍

Truckee is really a fantastic town even during these mega snows and Tahoe is beautiful.
At 0:18 is Sugar Bowl ski resort. During the winter of '82-'83 the snow was so deep that the cable for the Mount Lincoln lift was below the snow depth at the top of the mountain. They cut a trench under the lift in that section and you rode the chair through that trench below the snow. With the avalanches sliding down into Silver Belt Gully the snow depth was around 70'. It snowed every month except August of '83. July 17th had 6" of snow at 6000'. Of course now we have global climate warming change and it rarely gets below 70 degrees at Sugar Bowl. With the melting of the glaciers and the rise of the sea level, Sugar Bowl, which used to be at 7000' elevation, is now a popular ocean front surfing destination. If you time it just right you can ride a chairlift to the top of a wave and you don't have to paddle out!

Thank you very much spending much time for putting together this "very watchable" video I'm from the UK, we never have weather like that here` I love snow but also know the ramifications of such loads depicted in your video. Pretty on a postcard but not so pretty when with it: haha. The situation anywhere near of that in your video here in the UK, was 3 months of freezing weather after a terrible blizzard with 15-20 snowdrifts in places. Temperatures didn't rise above freezing for 2-3 months. That winter has gone down in history as one of the most deadly in the UK, killing people and of life-stock.. I love the way you've put several situations together in the video! that must have taken a long time, WELL done and thanks again.

Amazing Shots, TKY,, //. There should be a sign on every vehicle streanded : I WANTED TO GO SOMEPLACE TODAY ! IT WAS IMPORTANT !
The 2017 winter is the one that shut down ski resorts. After the EPA promoted a "Protect our Winters" event in CO in 2014 - when Boston got plastered. Gina wasn't home so she missed it. People don't realize there are cycles - and if we miss it one year, it gets made up for later.
All these truck drivers spend their driving time either talking on the phone, or listening to music. They should've been listening to the weather forecast. They shouldn't have been there in the first place. At least 2 days before it happened, the weatherman painted the picture of what was to happen. No excuses, unless you live there.

it's not difficult b/c in California the temperatures never get *that* cold. the overnight low -- and mind you these are the lows at like 4:00am -- at Lake level are around -5C. the average highs at lake level are typically -4C to 2C. and Lake Tahoe, isn't terribly windy like it is in the middle of the continent, so wind chills aren't so bad. i've been skiing in Vermont with a mountain peak windchill of -80C. you have to wear a neoprene mask over your face with your goggles on so that you don't get frostbitten. when it snows hard though, you probably wouldn't believe how hard it snows in California.
