We lived in Reno in the '60's. I LOVED all the snow, and loved driving in the snow. I don't remember people having snow tires back then. You just had to learn how to drive in the stuff. My father and I got stuck up on the pass coming down from Lake Tahoe. Spent most of the night waiting for the snowplows to open the road. About 5:00 a.m., we got going. We were in a VW bus with bias tires, no chains. The snow was coming down in big flakes but were swirling in all directions - very hypnotic. Had to guess where the road was using the snow sticks as guides - these were little poles sticking up about 6 feet.

NHP stopping people without chains on the way up so they didn't bother me on the way down but even sticking to 35mph, some of the ride wasn't under my own power.
