This storm is to the point where even veteran locals with snow worthy vehicles should just stay home.

This is normal snowfall for that area. Break out some of the history books of snow in that area, from the 1800s and thereabouts. You'd be shocked to to see how much snow would fall up there.

@@anxiousbeachbums Don't' know what that guy kreemerz is babbling about it being "normal" to have a record pace of average snowfall, and then comparing it to burying a couple horses in 1800. I guess they do get 5 foot snows every winter but these storms have been pretty off the charts. Awesome to have nearly 2 years worth of snow at this point to help make up for the drought years.

Well snow pack it's essential for West. Younger Dryas has had up to 2 miles of ice in Nortben America Continent, How much of snow pack is that? In 11th century. There was "Mini Ice Age" Baltic Sea was solid frozen.

Yes we are , im in Soda springs ca ( 15 min from truckee , donner summit) Truckee ain't got nothing on our snow lol, in about an hour or so we are getting tge next round

I used to live in Truckee. Never saw anything like this; not even close. The dedicated CalTrans, CHP, and truckers deserve the biggest shout-outs. They help keep everybody safe, fed, and supplied.

I lived in Truckee for 41 years and saw my share of heavy snowfall. The most I saw was 5ft. overnight and that occurred twice.

Been here in Truckee for 41 years! This is almost the worse I can remember! Three days of a break & then we’re right back at it. Seems like early 80’s. Prosper Heights. All those people who moved up here during COVID to get away from the madness down below, are probably regretting it now.

Crazy. We were able to get off Banner Mountain early this morning. The snow line was down to 2000 feet. Thanks to all ‘plow boys’ braving the storm and all the power guys fixing the power. 🙏 Be safe everyone.

I’m used to the snow in Grass Valley, but I can’t shovel or put chains on anymore. I’m staying in motels and with family in Sacramento and Santa Rosa. I’ve been texted by PG&E and emergency services the power has been off since yesterday. Snow is great for youngsters, I had my fill growing up n Grass Valley.

We are just now getting out of our home for the first time in 6 days. Thankfully provisions were stocked up. Firewood was stored in the garage. The silence was (is) amazing. Really enjoy hearing the train horns on the crews clearing the lines. Watched plenty of movies and enjoyed each other's company tremendously. Thanks to all those for making things accessible again.

December 12, 2019. I accepted a load from Lodi, CA to Boise, Idaho. It was my second week by myself. Im a florida guy, never seen snow before. It was raining that whole day. I saw all of the signs about "chain law in effect", thinking that didnt apply to me because it was raining. Got on I-80 going East. At the 5000 ft. Mark, I learned about weather and mountains. Epic winter wonderland. Everyone else was Chaining up their tires but I just went in my sleeper berth and watched videos on how to chain up. I attempted it but only got wet, numb limbs and dirty. This paticular pass is THE MOST DANGEROUS in America during the winter. Make sure you have had practice chaining, make sure you have food and supplies on your truck and make sure you take it SLOW going down the mountain.

I would argue Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado is worse then Donner. Been over both dozen of times in the winter.

Holy cow!!! I hope all are well! Just imagine what the Donnors and others on that wagon train went through! They had no forewarning systems like today! They relied totally on themselves...and their deceased...to survive and what little knowledge they had of such a thing. I spent a month one summer, years ago in a tent, at a 60 acre property, reading at night about the Donnors from a lantern. We were not far from a place called Chilcoot, and Frenchman's lake area. What a wonderful summer it was! Fishing, filming, catching frogs, riding dirtbikes, bathing in a creek, exploring old buildings. I'll never forget it!

Exactly...that pass can get major snow we just never know when what year our how much mother nature does her owen thing ....

I grew up in the Colorado mountains and saw my fair share of snow...but wow, this is insane even by my standards! Just goes to show you how much moisture those Pacific storms pack when they hit the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

@@iloestryker3012 yeah, sadly the east can't even compare with the sierra's snowfall even on the wildest years. in mountainous parts of quebec the snow depth might maybe reach 2 meters on a very snowy year, but in this video it looks like 5-10 meters, thats crazy. and the storm, or the winter isnt over yet

The average snowfall at Echo Summit, on the Hwy 50 route to Tahoe, is 411 inches annually. Mammoth is now approaching 500" for the 22-23 season.

@@iloestryker3012 "recalling the big seventy eight blizzard..." Yes, Rt 128 (Boston bypass) had hundreds of abandoned cars left buried in snow drifts making it hard to clear the road of snow. I lived in Western MA at that time in the Berkshires. Snowbanks from plowed snow were seven to eight high on our country road at 1700 ft elevation. Our farmhouse (wood heated) was cozy and warm as I watched the National Guard (on TV) with huge equipment that was flown in from N. Carolina to help clear the snow. I was born in MA in 1944. 1978 was the worst I ever seen it.

This pass is brutal in a blizzard! It blows in wicked fast. My car radiator conked out passing through there in December 2008, and luckily I was able to roll downhill to the only hotel and repair shop outside of Reno. I was there for 2 days. As a kid from Utah I had the pioneer history of Donner Pass in my mind and, wow, that would've been terrifying in a covered wagon!

@ Outside the Box Ink, exactly, and those who live there know how it gets some years! I used to live in Applegate down the mountain near where the trucks chain up, and have been to Donner/Truckee many times - base of Donner statue represents snow depth when they got stranded - 20 ft.! No way out!

I've lived in Minnesota for 7 decades so I've seen plenty of snow but...............this is freakin' amazing. That is a LOT of snow!!! Really impressive!!!

I am never going to complain when I have to go out and plow a measly 8 inches off my driveway! Very impressed with the number of building that had obviously kept up with their roofs…and the ones who had not. Can’t help but wonder how wildlife copes with this amount of snow.

Much love (and thanks) to all of the CHP, Nevada County & Placer County SO's, snow plow drivers, EMTs, Fire, etc. out there! I'm a former Nevada City & Auburn, CA resident (retired in Kimberly, Idaho, out by Twin Falls). I've been watching this entire cycle of storms online and have a parent living in Nevada City. Between videos, KCRA coverage and Chief Meteorologist, Mark Finan from KCRA I've been able to keep tabs. Praying for power to come on, sun to come out and once roads open and all settles down, come back out to Northern California for some phenomenal skiing!

Great documentary on this snow pack. Keep safe and remembering what it feels like to live in it. We shoveled pathways, decks, roofs, put on chains and brought firewood in for neighbors. I loved it because I was young, healthy and fit. Worked at and skied Snow Valley outside of Running Springs, CA Really is beautiful and if you prepare in the warmer months. Loved playing cards, listening to music, jigsaw puzzles and visiting neighbors soup in the crockpot and a few potatoes in the fireplace coals. Good times. Thank you for sharing this.

Was in a storm like this in the 90’s. Snow covered the vent for the pellet stove and everyone in the house got carbon monoxide poisoning. Lucky to have survived! Please check to make sure your vents are clear on the roof!

A friend of mine bought house in this area. He called and asked why there was a snowblower and a flame-thrower in the garage. Well, I says...it snows...occassionally. Now...he is quite proficient with the tools that were so generously left behind. 😂

Maybe the former homeowner was moving to a sunnier location without snow.

I live in Reno, and I have put on plenty of chains over the years but with storms like these, I look at cars stuck on HW 80 and think "why"? What WERE you thinking? Thinking? You weren't. May everyone be safe and well and eventually get home. I will say that I am grateful for the water that will come from this and hope that the ground can absorb a good bit. I was up at Tahoe in September and I have never seen it so dry and I've been going up there since the 60's. Wishes safety to everyone that lives up there, from Truckee to all around the Lake and surrounding communities. That is a boat load of snow to contend with.

Hopefully Pyramid Lake will get a much needed filling out of this winter as well. I grew up in Sparks from the mid 50's to graduating Sparks High in '71 and don't remember anything like this.

Fun getting stuck up there in an 18 wheeler on Rt 80 going west to Cali in early 2010. Snow kept coming down harder and harder. Took a while for the message boards to say Chain Up. By that time it was Too Late! Fun chaining up in all that snow fall. I definitely won’t forget that!

Holey Moley! Never seen snow that high in Tahoe before that completely covers the home! Wowza!

But, yeah, Sierra at Tahoe ski resort has gotten 462 inches this Winter at 8800 feet. That's 38.5 feet. That was before this storm which has added another 5-6 feet.

This is the amount of snow we used to get every year when I was young. Now, it's a rarity.

Not a rarity, 2011, 2017, 2019, 2022 and 2023. This year is the first one in 42 years I can remember that has been non-stop though. It's stormed nearly every week since January. 9 feet at Soda Springs in the past 7 days and 3 feet since yesterday.

I used to work on Donner Pass. Yes, I've seen weather like this a number of times. Once you're over the top, and start going down the East side of the mountains, it gets somewhat better.

They need more water storage, without it most of the moisture just flows away. The population has doubled since the last dam was built.

I lived in Serene Lakes, Donner Pass from 1981 - 1985 and 1983 was just like this new dump. Alpine Meadow Ski had a severe avalanche took out the ski lodge and several people...snow was over the tele lines it was very serious times. Lucky for me I had a lifted Dodge Power Wagon chained all 4 wheels to get around.

Those old Power Wagons were pretty good. I drove one for work in 1974-75 in sometimes bad conditions. It went through u-joints pretty fast but, as you say, with all four wheels chained up there wasn't a lot that could stop it.

Donner Pass, cars, trucks are stuck, can you now see why so many pioneers died there? Those scenes are so scary.I can't imagine anyone one traveling anywhere in that.

What an awesome video!!! It makes me appreciate the hot days of summer. (not really) I cannot imagine what it would be like to live there when this is happening. I have never lived where it snows, so wouldn't know the 1st thing about surviving. Hats off to these people who clear the way!

Here is how I survive bad snow storms/brutally cold temps. I think you could handle this with no experience. Step 1 - Stay home. Step 2 - Turn heat on. Takes a good second or so to flip the switch. That's it. Obviously more complicated if you absolutely must travel in which case it is important to know how to deal with it. And I have a plan for what to do if the power goes out for a while during really cold temps while travel is impossible.

It's crazy the amount of snow from mammoth to Truckee. The melt is going to be nuts.

That’s an equivalent of 14.4” of rain. If you get 17’ of snow overall, that’s an equivalent of 20.4” of rain, just 3.6” shy of 2’ of rain.

My uncle Wil lived in Truckee for many years and we'd go visit often. I remember a series of snow storms sometime in the 90's ( maybe someone out there will remember the year) whereas my uncle had to climb out his second story window just to go outside and greet us due to the super heavy snowstorms and very high and sudden snow drifts.

I’ll never forget New Year’s Day 1997 it was 57 degrees in Reno and we had a HUGE atmospheric river go through before it was even named. Reno flooddd that year. Scary time!@Noe Gomez

Lived in Donner Summit and Truckee in the early 80's. We had a storm about as bad as this, as I got over 8 ft of snow, snowed in for 3 days, as plows couldn't make it up the road, great memories. Thanks for sharing.

Was that 1988? Down in Meadow Vista at 1850’ we got around 2’ in one storm that year.

This is what dreams are made of! I used to go out for a ride when we would get blizzards, sometimes I'd be out until the sun came up without realizing how late/early it was. I'd get home and my truck would be a solid brick of snow with snow packed in the grill along with every crack and crevice.

WOW! Amazing to see that the residents are so on top of keeping their driveways plowed. And quite the parade of powerful smaller snowblowers on display.

I grew up there in the 19060 and 80s This was the normal snow fall every year. Don't complain, the water runoff in the spring will good for the lake. You should hope for more heavy winters like this. As it's the only way to fill the Lakes and reservoirs.

@@paulvon2378 One WalMart Produce empty and various items gone. One near me workers said better to come early a.m. bc food goes fast. Grabbed what I could today. Going in morning I’ll be there when they open.

The weather there in California is just INSANE. Right now here in Chicago at 12:30 a.m. on 3/2, it is a “balmy” 42 degrees with NO SNOW on the ground. I guess it has to snow somewhere, I’m just glad it’s not here.

I grew up in northern California and Donners pass closed every year. Now everyone's used to these soft warm winters.

@@francoutah Powell and Mead don't really get any water from the west slope of the Sierra. All the river reservoirs on the west slope will fill this year. After being pretty empty for the last 2 years. Both Powell and Mead get all their water from the "Rocky mt." drainage and the Colorado river complex. Snow in Idaho, Utah counts for more.

@@rayalevesque Las Vegas and Meade are a different story. Nevada will end up getting more water from Colorado river and California will need to stop wasting water. Feds will not let Meade go Deadpool.

I lived in Reno, NV, in the late 90s and Mt. Rose would get so much snow in winter. There was a visitor center at top of the mountain probably close to 2 story tall and it would be completely covered in snow. There would only be a light dusting of snow in Reno with winds stiff enough to tip over 18-wheelers on the hwy to Carson City.

That’s absolutely crazy… I live in Illinois and I never saw so much snow… I believe the Donners started out there journey in Springfield Illinois….

This is a little more than usual, but that area is used to a lot of snow. A few years ago they had a season total of like 60 ft. I think it's over 40 now. It's all good. We need the water.

It's not like back East when they get 2 feet and everything comes to a stop and a bunch of people die. In Tahoe people are used to this!! I can't wait to ski tomorrow!!

I used to drive a semi up Donner Pass I-80 in winter and had to chain up. Only drove 25MPH. At times, they closed the highway down when visibility got too bad. Crazy ride across Donner Pass.

@Gina Padilla No, I brought high end office furniture from Grand Rapids Michigan to California and then loaded up produce from California to deliver at various warehouses in US and Canada

Wow, the news casters were not lying about the blizzard and telling people not to go up to the mountains. This is nuts! It was snowing in Victorville, San Bernardino, & Riverside last week. I think we're pretty much got the drought taken care of 😊👍🏽

I live in Boston and this winters been very mild, no snowstorms, hardly any snow at all, I love the snow, it quiets everything down, it's beautiful, although that's a lot of snow to deal with. Thank you

This has certainly shaped up to be the mega storm. Makes you think of the old Donner Party and what they went through.

Awesome - thanks for the info on my family's cabin up there. Glad to see our road/parking spot is plowed as we're hoping to go check on things on Thurs/Fri during the break between storms. Hiking a few hundred yards from our parking space is definitely going to be a challenge...

Wow - I have huge respect for you getting out there in the elements to share this awesome video! I have a copy of the book "Snowbound Streamliner" which tells of the 3 day ordeal of passengers stuck up there on a train in 1952. The pictures in that book are amazing. If you can get a copy of the book it is well worth it.

I have to tell you, living in the Northern CA Sacramento Valley, the view of the snow covered Coastal Range to the Sierra Nevada's is absolutely beautiful AND I'm thankful our roads are clear! 😁✌💞🤘⛷

When I see this much snow I think of water. Water for quenching the thirst of the patched land in the lower valleys. California has been in a long and intense drought for the last 20 year, so this snow is very much welcomed.

Thank you so much for this! Kudos! . Exciting to see snowpack. Unfortunately, there are concerns for severe flooding. Due to extended drought, increased "heat events" and loss of vegetation to wildfires we will see some new terra-forming. The ground has lost absorbancy in some areas, we also lost ancient ice that anchored portions of historic snowpack locations. People need to take inventory of potential watershed/flooding in unanticipated locations. I am in SoCal. I watched a hunk of mountain cleave last week. Woolsey Fire took ancient oak forest, new pathways for watershed took way over past two years and this storm broke the mountain. Look around. Don't wait for someone to tell you about flooding and mudslides.... unless you know a real old-timer or a friend at the historic society, you need to look out for yourselves...... BIG flooding is predicted... I think they call it "megaflood". State of California has published a ton of information

Unless you've either been here or are a big weather buff or Meteorologist you can't believe the amount of snow that can fall here.

Personally I love it. I live in Lindsay Ontario and it was a bright sunny day when the bus took us to school. By 12 o'clock the school was scrambling to figure out what to do. A lot of students had to stay and sleep on the gym mats and every person with a snowmobile were utilized to get us from the main highway to our homes on the side roads. not just snow we had high winds for days later and we were delivering milk bread eggs etc. to people who were snowbound. Thank god for snowmobiles! Obviously we didn't get as much but there is no difference in the seriousness of the situation. We were playing soccer at first break and at noon hour we were making snowmen with the body being a half a ton in weight and thirty of us pushing to make it bigger. I don't think it fully melted until the end of April lol
