My minnie doxie had a mad nose, she could sniff out anything. A little hunter, too. Seeet with people, she hated big dogs and would launch her entire 11lbs right at them!

I've heard they make pretty good drug dogs too. Our Beau would be pretty good with rats we developed a rodent problem during the summer and he's caught three and killed two of them before mommy could get them away from him, but unlike his toys as soon as they quit wiggling he's done with them and starts hunting for another "fresh kill"😆

It's crazy how well their noses work. My gf has a Doxi Scot, that can find frozen minnow heads under 4" of snow. However, we she can be 6" away from a mound of freshly burrowed soil, and the mound is moving up and down from whatever rodent is still burrowing, and she couldn't care less about it.

Do you give her a treat when she investigates the mound? One of my dogs will hunt for the joy of hunting. One of them is the bookkeeping dog. 1. Am I getting paid? 2. Do I get to kill the rat? (No, not in barn hunt.) 3. If I'm not getting the good treats and I don't get to kill the rat, why in God's name do you think I'm going to do this?

Barn Hunt - there are clubs all around the country. Then there's also Happy Ratters and (I think) Rat Games which are very similar. But if you search on Barn Hunt, you should find someone offering trials & training near you.

In a “Crazy 8’s” competition class, there are 8 tubes with live rats, 4 tubes with rat bedding and several empty tubes. The dog has only 2 minutes to locate and alert the handler to as many live rats as possible - without alerting on any non-rat tubes! The dog must also navigate the tunnel and climb *at least* one straw bale to qualify. This was only Ronni’s 2nd try at Crazy 8’s, so getting 5 (almost 6) 🤷‍♀️ rats was great! It’s a ton of fun too.

Jasmine, the Barn Hunt Association has practice groups and trials all over the country. Look up Barn Hunt Ltd. online and look for a group or training facility near you. They’ll happily get you and your dachshund started in the sport. 👍🏼

I have a Jack Russell/Manchester Terrier can he do it. He would love it. However you might have to keep him separate from other dogs. He thinks other dogs are rats too!

Barn Hunt is not limited to any one breed of dog or even purebreds. The only requirement is that they must be able to go through the tunnel. I've seen a Great Dane crawl through it. One of my mutts loves it.

Looks like he found that 4th one and they didn’t call it as he did? Playing favorites?
