I am both sad and pleased that in his last tournament, Rashid
Gibiatovich came to my home in Latvia. He did not take first place, but
the prize for beauty, as always, he took with him. Players die, tournaments are
forgotten, but the works of great artists are left behind them to live on forever.

@Flaze07, While not a possessor of vast knowledge. They idea about sacrificing is that you gain something in exchange which is the whole point behind a good chess players sacrifice. That is why it is called a sacrifice and not losing a piece. Losing a piece is your piece getting captured because you blundered. A sacrifice is you giving a peace in exchange for something important. Usually activity or a mate or whatever is appropriate at the time.

Whenever I play a game, I always set up my knights facing in opposite directions. The reason I do this is because, at the end of a game, when perhaps only a single knight is left standing, I know from which square he set off on his journey. Call me a romantic old fool. That's OK. After 9. a4, I don't think I've ever seen another GM game with the pieces laid out in such a symmetrical pattern. Excluding the King and Queen, whites pieces are perfectly symmetrical along the vertical center of the board.

Once I went against a hippo defense he secured his king with everything he can there where no empty lines in between on the other hand i started with Berlin defense getting 2 knights in the game. The game ended in less then 10 moves with 0 pawn or minor pieces loss from both sides and i checkmated that game with just one knight 😂😂😂.

LOL, I love the Hippo so much! Glad to see it can play the human element even with very strong players. It's very easy to blunder against the Hippo, and it's a position that pays very little attention to the opponents opening moves. You have to watch for a very small number of attacking ideas, and your opening lines change very little. Super easy to play and not so easy to play against, though in theory play it's a position that plays for a draw (not always a bad idea as black).

I have recently discovered the Hippo and started playing it. I do not recall the years this game was played but it seems to me that both men were getting tired and maybe one was frustrated. It was certainly a fun game to watch and especially the endgame options. I for one would like to see more Hippo games that were successful and even games using the Hedgehog.

I've seen comments suggesting that at 11:09, black should attempt to fork the white queen by placing his knight on c2, but this would be a mistake, because of Rook to b1. However, I think this would make a barnburner of an ending and would make for a great game. I'm a poor player, but I would love to play white against somebody in this position. In fact, I would enjoy playing a number of variations of this ending. Such a great game, maybe my favorite, thank you for posting and for your expert commentary.
