For those curious about an authentic Diablo sandwich…. The restaurant featured in the movie is called the old hickory house. The Diablo sandwich appeared on the menu after the movie was released. Jackie Gleason was doing improv during that scene and made up the name of the sandwich on the fly. It didn’t exist before the movie. After the movie came out a plain pulled pork sandwich with a tobasco based BBQ sauce was introduced.

Where was it? Here in Nashville, there's lots of "old hickory", but not this sandwich or the restaurant. In fact, even our famous hot chicken was meant as a trick for punishment, accidentally found to be good, and barbeque was pulled pork or ribs, never brisket! We just didn't have chile-hot food, and the few briskets in the grocery stores were cheaper pot roasts. So that's not from here!

I was 11 going on 12 years old in 1977, and one of my sisters, her husband, and my mother all went to the drive-in to see "Smokey and the Bandit", and "The Sting" with Paul Newman. It was the first time I had ever been to a drive-in movie. My mother got upset at the first cuss word, but she managed to keep calm enough to let us get through it without having to leave early.

It's "Diablo Sammich" not sandwich..... I worked for the Sheriff's Office where this was filmed. We used to eat at the Old Hickory House on a regular basis (we had 2 in the county back then). Both of them are long gone and bulldozed. I love to watch the original movie every now and then just to see how the area looked back in the 70's. There are a number of scenes where I was there to watch (and perform crowd or traffic control which was the official reason we were there) and yes I did get to meet Burt and Jerry. And as to hot links, I grew up eating split red hot links (red hots) in biscuits!!!!

I was 12 when it came out and my parents wouldn’t let me see it because Jackie Gleason swore so much in it. When I finally was able to sneak it in about a year later, it is still a classic favorite to this day for this classic fast car loving lady. Our fellow car collector friend comes over and we have the Diablo night, but ours are not near as nice as yours, recipe we found it was ground beef like a sloppy Joe with sautéed onions, jalapeño, Heinz ketchup. I’m still a Ford girl who loves a Bandit TA and Burt Reynolds, with a Jerry Reed sidekick. Thank you Kent for bringing a smile to us seems we found someone in the cooking world who appreciates a classic car fun movie, as well as your leveled up take on the Diablo ❤❤❤

Made my own concoction of spicy mustard with yellow mustard and hatch green chilies - just discovered the Fresh Market near me sells them. Couldn't get the same sausage, but adapted to a hot smoked sausage. It was a treat! Keep up the good work, Kent. Everything you make is easy to do at home and put together, and has inspired me to have more fun with my grill, smoker and stove. You've also got me in the market for a Hasty Bake! Kent ; Love LOVE the heavy base intro music . This episode was so mutch fun. Brought back the laughing when watching that old movie ( must be 20 times ? ). The sandwidge was the BOMB,,, the Hot Links would be over the top heat 4 me, but I'd order one without. Love watching from Ontario Canada . Like your tribute to the Troops !

My dad was a huge Jackie Gleason fan from his Honeymooner days (the few times he would go to the movies was for a Gleason film), and Mom had a crush on Burt Reynolds so this movie was one they could both enjoy. And it got played a lot in the early days of cable when I was a kid so I've seen this a ton and then the Cannonball Run movies as well.

This is super crazy because i just randomly decided to make this for dinner two nights ago. They way i interpreted it, was that it was a hot ham bbq sandwich. So i frizzle fried up some chipped chopped ham and cooked onions in with it and tossed on some bbq sauce then put it on a bun and put texas pete hot sauce on it 👍🏻 i had been talking about making this sandwich from the movie for like the past year. Randomly decided to make it and then u release this video, very crazy i love it!

From what I've heard, Jackie Gleason says just tell me what you want and I'll do it. I think everything he says in the whole movie was Improv. I do know there was no script for the restaurant scene and both Reynolds and Gleason made it up on the fly. Two of the greatest comedy actors that ever lived.

Bank robber? Bank robbin' is baby shit alongside of what this dude is doin'. Almost killed law officers. Drivin' through people's backyards, knockin' down mailboxes. He's got a broad in the car, took her across the state line. That's the Mann Act. I don't think he's got her permission, and that's kidnapping. How's that for high jinks?

Loved the Diablo video...I'm originally from Texarkana, that movie put the town on the map, but it ruffled a few feathers, making us look like a hick town. I also appreciate your salute to the veterans at the end of the show...(22 years Air Force). Keep on cooking Kent!

Kent, I love that you brought in two classic actors from an awesome movie. It take a man with a great cowboy hat and a even greater mustache to pull it all together!! Had a friend that put a Corvette LS7 427CID into his Firebird and that thing would top out at 180 MPH. my cars only topped out at 140.
