I have an 18 month old Alaskan Malamute, since he was a pup he has had severe seperation anxiety. It has been a very big issue. Everytime I leave he pees in the crate and barks continuously. It's made my life a living hell when leaving, even if I'm only gone half an hour. I'm a stay at home mum so I'm with him a lot! I've just started this method after watching this video, so I'm hoping it will go well! I love my malamute so much and this is honestly the only issue I am having with him. UPDATE: Tried this method and worked wonders! I have a pet cam that keeps an eye on him for extra comfort, only now and again I speak through the camera to tell him to lie down and that works great aswell. Honestly you give such a great explanation in this video, also he has stopped peeing in the crate and actually falls asleep, which is a huge milestone!!!

@@veronicataylor5815 it took a month to see a big difference, I highly recommend getting a camera to live stream when you're out and one you can talk through, I still have to talk through it now and again but I found the camera helped so much! This method is great as well to get started and them used to the crate, he hasnt had an accident in the crate in over 2 months, I'm able to leave the house and know hes okay :)

I can relate, just made a huge breakthrough with my Siberian husky pup, he absolutely freaked every time I introduced the toy I got from the breeder, but he knows I just want him to feel comfortable, he's gotten wise to me wanting to crate train him but I think he'll be ok now cause he's upstairs sleeping and he knows I'm not there and that would have triggered him yesterday even

Dog safety tip I learned the hard way night before last. When using a blanket for night night time over the crate make sure that they are not pulling the blanket through the bars of the crate and ripping holes in it. Nightly inspections guys. I thought it was fine and I didn't know that my four-month-old Husky/Shepard mix had done that very thing and she had somehow put her head through the hole, twisted it like a noose and almost Final Destination herself in her bed. After that happened, no more blanket over the crate for us, and I threw it away to avoid tempting other people to try to use it for her.

My fam got a husky pup less than a week ago and she already loves her crate! She goes in there to nap throughout the day with the door wide open. Coming into a house with a child and other animals, she seems to like having her very own space where she can decompress. I'm so grateful for vids like yours that helped us make this transition smoother for her!

Just bought a six week old Siberian husky last week. The pup is not potty trained and was getting into anything and everything. The biting and chewing on people and stuff was just endless so we decided to purchase a crate for occasional time outs and rest and for times when we weren't around to supervise. The first night in the crate was a nightmare! The pup cried all night long and kept me up until dawn. I absolutely got no sleep that night. After a a couple of nights of this I HAD to figure something out. I remembered how certain animals who were caught and placed in cages were sometimes covered by a cloth or blanket to calm them down. So I decided to place a couple of large towels on top of the crate and draped it along the sides so that the pup could not see any activity outside the crate. Incredible! the pup almost immediately calmed down and eventually went to sleep after 5 to 10 minutes. I didn't hear a peep from her the rest of the night! We've never had any issues since then and it has always worked effectively. But, I do look forward to the day when the pup finally matures and we no longer have to do this.

Great advice! This works for some dogs, other dogs it stresses them out more. However, I'm amazingly happy that it helped in your situation. It's always good to tweak a strategy to see if its right for you, and in your case it sounds like you did well by finding that little difference. Thank you so much for sharing, hopefully this will help others going through the same issue!

as a new husky owner 1year now,I've learned that husky,'s are to social to be left alone. we work from home so Nikko is only alone in the truck when we shop or eat out. He is an escape artist so he is a cable dog. he is in and out when he wants but always cabled or leashed as he has become used to the prospect ,H knows the drill and doesn't mind the restrictions as he is never alone for more than an hour in the truck.when we go anywhere I walk nikko at our destination and walk him again before we leave. He doesn't go nuts because the routine gives him stimulation and there are goodies involved.I hope this is helpful al

Very well spoken and informative video. *(My question is, should you just straight up ignore their cries in the crate at night or would it be a mistake to talk to them or put a hand in?)* mines Not a huskey but still. Jynx isn’t destructive and really super layed back but after getting her at six months she was way too used to using puppy pads and I am trying to teach her to go outside and not use the pads as much. The biggest thing is Yesterday I’ve started a strict walk/play/feeding schedule for her to get used to. Someone gave me a wire crate that’s about the perfect size. I’m on night 2 of crate training and it is a little discouraging hearing her cries and barks. Luckily it’s not constant but just fits of whimpers and digging every so often. She’s next to my night stand and putting classical piano music on when she’s in there and a fan seems to help. She pretty much immediately started going to lay down in the crate which I hope is a good sign. Even after being locked in for periods today she didn’t have a problem going back in when the door was open. I’m a little worried that she cries while I’m gone (I have neighbors)but I don’t have a way to tell yet. Thanks for the tips!

I find it challenging with my Everest when we leave the house. At night, she has no problem going into he crate to sleep, but when we leave the house for any period of time she cries and howls, pees in the crate, and kicks out the plastic liner...she is almost 8 months and we've been doing this since the beginning. What would you do in this situation?

Love your videos. Max came my way 3 yrs ago. He is my almost 6 yr old rescue. He came with a cage which I was told he enjoyed open. He went friggen bananas the first time I left him alone. This after I had done the crate practice as I left the room a few min at a time. We could never get past 2 min n he'd howl, cry, freak! He's destroyed & escaped from the crate to the point he became my shadow. He's since better wth some anxieties but it's always needing to be in practice or we need to start over. He is mischief too & tests his Alphaness. Being at home, I now purposely " crate him " but in a separate room even when I'm in the house then step out a few min at a time. Over the years, I've used lots of positive reinforcement & Food of course lol.. He's so good driven. He also came to me with many bad habits so it took awhile to break him from those. So I guess he's come a long way so far. But I need a life too N need to know he'll be ok for longer periods of time. He still howls, paces, etc but much better than before. Who knows, I just nay add a buddy for him as he needs more playtime. Other things that are still in practice as he sometimes displays dominance so slow introduction needed with other dogs 🐾 all work in practice lol

Bella was so small I started her in JoJo's over sized cat crate.JoJo was hot that I commandeered his sanctuary box. And she was NOT down with that program at all!!! Even with treats or toys to teach her in and out she rebelled. She was quite the screamer at first but the alternative was to let her tear up my apartment when I needed to rest. It took about a week of consistency and lots of yesses to have success. I did my best to wear her out before any attempts of in and out and before she went in at bedtime. I think the biggest part of the success was she loves going for rides and in order to go she had to get into the crate in the vehicle, which I ran the seatbelt thru the handle. I did keep a towel in it lol so she would be more comfy. When she outgrew JoJo's box he was glad to get it back and I closed her in my bedroom with the cat and Chakra and myself. Fast forward to the extra large airline crate she is now in and Chakra is jealous because she hasn't had one in a long time. But at the same time she has a plush bed of her own with a cozy blanket and doesn't want Bella to use her bed but wants to bogart Bella's crate. Anywho, a couple months had lapsed between the cat carrier and big airline crate. During those months I gave up on renting from slumlords and moved us into my 19' travel trailer. Bella's crate is wedged between the pull out couch bed (in the camp cot size) and Chakra's plush bed is under the table. Maybe Chakra needs a curtain or tablecloth to imitate a door? Initially I left the door off of the big crate and gave her meals to her in it. After a few days of that I put the door on and resumed training. Within reason Bella goes in her crate if I can't pay attention to her, or if I need a break. I get that in doggy the mama dog doesn't give them time outs...but I do lol. I do keep a blanket in the crate and with her teething I often give her a beef bone or something to chew on. When first crate training I do agree to keep what you put in there to a minimum. Thanks for another great video.

My Pyrenees/Aussie mix did ok with crate training as a puppy. However the last several weeks, she has really started to struggle and hate the crate to the point that when I put her in it she will thrash in it to the point that the bottom latch pops out and then somehow squeezes herself through the small opening between the door and frame. How do I get her back to the place where she tolerates it again?

Advice: my 12 year old cocker is struggling with separation anxiety since I’ve gone back to work after covid. I’ve tried toys to keep him entertained but he still barks and paces around (got a pet cam). Am I best putting him in a crate when I leave the house?

My dog is 18 years old 3 issues that are making his life difficult are. 1. Blindness (left side blind, vet says he sees blurry) 2. Prostate infection (just treated his infection but now he pees everywhere) 3. Severe Anxiety ( I started doing more exercise with him to get him tired and perhaps have him sleep comfy, also giving him chews to help him sleep) Main problem is at nights, he cannot stay calm It’s hard to say good bye, I don’t know if it’s time to put him down or give him a bit more time to see if he can stay around another year 😞

Question. I have a puppy that I am trying this with however wouldnt giving them a treat when you come back in the room after waiting 5, 10, 15 mins etc. be rewarding them for whining? As in my dog tends to whine the entire time I go out of the room?

  • @feliciadavenport3621

This is a very old comment but just in case anyone else sees it, I believe it mostly boils down to the timing of the reward. You wouldn’t be rewarding whining that happened 5 mins ago or even 20 seconds ago. If you come back and they are still whining- wait until there is a break and that’s when you want to jump on the reward. Over time they associate good outcomes for being quiet and calm.

Might be a stupid question. But would this still work with our senior husky out not in a crate and our pup in the crate? Our senior is fine out but the younger dude destroys things and eats things he shouldn’t. We’ve tried to put him in a crate and he gets out. But we haven’t tried this method yet.

How long did it take your huskies to not cry bloody murder in their crate? My husky is only 8 weeks old but the sound is so horrible when left in her crate when I go leave in the morning and she is only in their for max 2 hours right now. She starts to cry after about 10 mins and barks/howls until let out but once she see's someone she quiets down right away to be let out. Did Hila and Britney Spears quiet down and relax after a certain amount of time? I am hoping she gets used to it eventually!

A few weeks for sure. It takes a while. It often takes any dog about 2 weeks to get used to or accustomed to a cycle or routine. So remember, you really have to be patient and keep it up, you'll thank yourself in the long-run.

Idk if Im late in leaving a comment but I need help with a decision. So I recently got a 2 month puppy, a husky, from my neighbor and I want to crate train her. My sisters dog lives with us, he is a 5 month golden retriever, and he is kind of crate trained (doesnt like to be in there except when my sister tells him to go to bed) He is still a puppy and doesnt take “orders” well. I am wondering if I should crate train my puppy in my room or in the living room with my sisters 5 month puppy? Or should i try to crate train the 5 month puppy myself first an train the 2 month separately in my room and when they’re both good I can move my dog to the living room?

Question for you. I have 2 two pit bulls who have chewed on the wire crates so bad that they(the crates) are now useless and have to thrown away. One of the pit bulls got trapped in my bedroom and chewed through the door to get out. Any suggestions? I crate my dogs when I'm gone to keep them out of trouble and now another pit bull of mine has chewed wires in her crate and made a big hole in the side of her crate(they DID NOT ingest the wire-found the pieces of wire on the floor)and I found both in my bedroom.

I had these same crates for my husky and she literally broke it beyond being able to use it. I tried for months. She hated it every time. Every trick I've tried has been futile. I would give her a Kong with peanut butter and she wouldnt even finish it before attacking her cage, I left an article of my clothing in there for a calming scent, I tried to get her to sleep in it, but after 2 weeks of absolutely no sleep I had to give in because it was affecting my job, her crate has never left my bedside. My next endeavour is CBD oil. Do you have any experience with it?

How about when they’re a puppy? I just adopted a 3 month old husky. Her foster parents said she goes into her at times but they put her in the crate at night. We put a bed and a favorite toy in her crate...the problem is she wants to see our face before she falls asleep. I put the crate on my nightstand and slept facing her...she fell asleep within 5 minutes. How do you suggest training puppies? Do you suggest I put the crate in the living room?

She is almost 2, is there a way to crate train her now? Should I leave the balcony open just in case she goes anxious? Not really sure what steps to go or do?

Hey there. You said you don’t need to crate them at night anymore and they sleep with you. How would I know when my puppy is ready for that and won’t cry anymore if one day we have to sleep separate - but now he’s used to sleep with me? He hasn’t since the day I got him but my older dog (who behaves fine) does, so the goal is they can both sleep wherever they want. I’m just afraid if I do that we go backwards in the process. The puppy is two months old

They fight, argue, play and take control over one another specially the male in their crate. I fed them most of the time in their cage and give them treats in their cage. Their are so use to their cage together I can't walk one at a time i have to take both of them together.
