In the video, there's a comment about being able to de-cat in the US. In some states, yes. But you can't de-cat a car that's registered in the state of California. There are periodic inspections. Of course, you can reinstall-test-re-cat. And a savvy California Highway Patrol officer can cite you between tests if you get pulled over. Great channel. Thanks.

Great video John, keep them coming. I guess you are talking about regular aggressive static revving? Is any static revving a no no?

Any static revving of the car is a little pointless, and when we say revving I'm talking higher rpm stuff. The big one to avoid is the harsh 'blipping ' of the throttle to generate flames from the exhaust, the flames come from unburnt fuel hitting the cats and literally exploding, this damages them.

The cheap cat has clearly failed, it looks to me that the cat element has become loose and actually come into contact with the exhaust side of the turbo and chewed it up.. Amazing. Yes revving constantly at a standstill is one sure way to BBQ your cats. Dont do it, its not a v10/12. Mechanic and tuner of 12 years including McLaren for a short time.

But doesn't that mean that decating it in the US, will try the turbos.... Also afaik the epa is cracking down on that. Want to make it illegal even on private property to run a modified engine. Mainly about the add blue deletes but should also affects cats.

I think it is people buying these cars second hand and thinking they are a £70k German car, so can run it like that... They forget these are £200k cars, and their service requirements, new or old will still be £200k car prices, not your usual £60k German car prices. I personally dislike people revving their standstill cars on social media, and the 0-60 drag races. These are performance cars, so built to 'handle', and be driven around corners, not just in a straight line... Just imho... 🤔

Only about have the states in the US you can remove the cats ILLEGALLY. Half the states have emission testing. But removing the cats is against federal law.

So this is a stupid question - but how is static revving to induce flames different from driving hard and having flames come out during the experience? Isn't it still unburnt fuel? I'm thinking 600LT.

  • @ThorneyMotorsport

Flames in normal driving are caused by fuel from the over run (when you lift off the throttle and the cylinders still have fuel in that is unburnt, its momentary and short lived. THe car is moving so it has airflow going through the intakes so its more of a snapshot in time where the fuel ignites in the exhaust rather than the cylinders. With static revving you are repeatedly creating this over fueling effect so it involves a lot more fuel being repeatedly thrown into the cats where they ignite and burn out. Do this over and over again causes the cats to over heat and break down.

Just don't get how you are being criticised John ???? Social media is crazy and full of idiots who think they know better. Presumably reasonable revving to 5 or 6,000 RPM for very short periods is not too bad and its only the hard revving to achieve flaming which cooks the cats. I think most people will blip the throttle on request without trying to show off and set the world alight
