He had the funniest monologues. He was so far superior to everyone before him - even better than Letterman and Carson. He desperately needed better guests and some polish on his interviews --- but his opening monologue was pure genius at times.

@@LuckyPlays Some polish on his interviews? He was the best interviewer by a long shot. He even had a decent conversation with Paris Hilton, he made her almost look like a normal person- a feat that no host had been able to do before. Letterman went for the cheap stuff, making fun of her like a 5th grader, not saying she doesn't deserve it for putting herself out with no specific talent, but it doesn't require special skill, like most of Dave´s stuff. Craig did creepy jokes, flirted with the women, but always respected them. His only bad interview that I can remember was his second one with Anthony Hopkins, but even that had it's moments. Letterman and Kimmel (look at the interview with Robert Downey Junior) make you feel awkward, because they never learned how to be social and respectful. Letterman had so many bad interviews, which is ok given that he had a long career, but he always treated unusual figures like Andre the giant or Marylin Manson like crap, making them feel bad for being different. Veerrry original, and I'm not even a fan of these guys. Had Craig interviewed them, they would be absolute classics. Carson was smooth, look at his interview with 105-year-old Mildred Holt in 1988- He took the opportunity to give an historic insight, by having a light and humorous conversation with an extremely old lady, who has seen so much in her life. In terms of respect compared to today, he seems lightyears ahead of modern entertainers, he was such a gentleman, but maybe that was required in that time period.
@LuckyPlays

@@Rick-qo2ok He let it get awkward fart too many times for most celebrities. He's my favorite talk show hose of all time behind Carson, but I do think that was his weakest link. If he clicked with the celebrity, it was fun to watch. But his percentage of awkward interviews was too high, and I believe that over time, it hurt who he could attract to speak on his show. IMO

and yet when he said the new generation was "kind of kinder" I get the impression he missed the point of "cancel culture". Maybe what he meant was more "inclusive"... oh wait, cancel culture doesn't believe in that either.
@DanielSaner
11 ай бұрын
@@g4l430 Sure there are people who go overboard and miss the point, always and everywhere. But I'd say that Ferguson is overwhelmingly right. Younger generations today are, from my experience, undeniably doing a million times better a job at being kind and understanding with each other than *any* bloody generation before them. That's what I find from listening to young people instead of trying to tell them what to think. They're surrounded by people with ulterior motives, trying to tell them who they should hate and be afraid of, but they don't give a shit. Meeting someone who lives or thinks differently than them makes them curious to learn more, rather than scared and defensive. Exceptions confirm the rule. But overall it makes me really optimistic about the future of the world. If you look at who stirs up drama about today's social issues, it's practically never young people, or the people actually affected by the issues. It's groups of permanently enraged old people. Meanwhile, young people just shrug their shoulders and deal with things their way. As for "cancel culture", I think Daniel Sloss said it best: it's a term used by inferior comedians, as an excuse for when they find that people don't find their material funny anymore, and they're unable to come up with new and better stuff. That's why they're not really "cancelled", as much as they love playing the victim card and claiming how they're being silenced. Actually, they're constantly present on all the events and media channels catering to a certain political persuasion, and audiences there love their minority bashing. They maybe lost their _mainstream_ audience. It's their own decision to moan about it and claim that there's a conspiracy against them, rather than reflecting and asking themselves whether all the people who say their material isn't funny anymore might have a point.

I remember when Ferguson took over the Late Late Show, I would actually make the effort to stay up to watch. Even at the time, you could tell he was the under the radar best late night host. It wasn't just his standup sections that were amazing at the beginning of each show, he was a hilarious interviewer. He could get a kind of mild guest with a topic that would have been a time filler on any other show and turn that little bit into something really enjoyable with the way he could find and coax out humor in anyone.
teared up a little bit when he said "if you wanna change the world, go ahead and change it...they're kinder and more thoughtful" would love to see more of him (and Geoff and Secretariat) someday, but one can only dream...
I wish he was still part of the late night shows. What he was able to pull off with what little he had to work with was incredible. I'm curious how much more he could have done if he had a bigger budget.

It is a way of being vocally engaged in real conversation (not mic recorded) to keep the sound energy and flow going. But you're right, it does not work at all in this context.

I still watch the reruns Craig your my favorite late nite show host
Only talk show I want on Blu-Ray I literally could watch this over and over! Great person!!
People, get over wishing Craig still had TLLS or took over for another host. If he wanted to, he'd do it. He's happy, and still making us happy. That's good enough for me.

Ok then, now you can take off your cape.
My fav late night host
The only late night talk show I ever watched, miss this guy , wish he could have a comeback
Craig Ferguson and Conan O'Brien, the 2 best hosts of all time. Their shows weren't really the same format as the other Late-night night ones. Comedy/improv always came first, over the script, if there even was one. people actually LOVE him, what u see is what you get, he's no mouthpiece and has his own standards and morals not speaking for some corpo. it was just pure entertainment. no propaganda.
REPLACE JIMMY WITH HIM!!!! LETS START A MOVEMENT!!
