If you know Craig Cameron he will teach his horses to ground tie. He does extensive ground work unlike most people too. That horse even if it does break through is not going to leave the other horses too.

I don't want a breakaway. If the horse can get away, he just learned a bad lesson. The horse should know how to give to pressure and be relaxed when tied to the line. If something unexpected spooks him, I am nearby to help him. He knows to defer to me when startled. If I am calm, he will be calm. If I need to help him, I have him tied with a quick release knot (like the bank robber knot).

Picket line? Hobbles? Why? I string up some white tape or rope around the area I want him to remain in and turn him loose inside. He will stay even if there's a mare in season nearby. Although he's not even quite green broke because he is primarily used for breeding I've trained him very well otherwise. I always take off his halter so he won't get hung up on anything. If, in an emergency such as a fire, I need to get him out of there fast I can either ride him out tackless or ask him to come with me while I'm on the ground. He trusts me enough follow my lead in an emergency situation as long as I remain calm. Yes, the strength of that trust has been tested and he has come through each time.

You are a skilled natural horseman. I also have that mutual trust and respect. It is a great accomplishment. Congratulations.

How long does it take to train a horse to do what your horses does? What do you do for training?

You tie a horse to a secure tie point. You do not want a break away. That teaches a horse a bad lesson. If he pulls and it breaks, he learns to pull. Not good.

sonseere10 it's better to have 1 horse break away for 1 reason, that 1 horse most likely won't leave the herd, reason 2, you don't want a whole string of horses running with the whole highline attached to them through the woods. Now on a hitching post or a trailer, I agree, you don't want them to break away. My gelding had a bad habit of pulling back because he kept breaking everything!

If you use a baling twine on the highline you can use a baling twine as a tie rope! :D I tie my horse so it will stick to the picket line, no escape lessons ! ;)
