Crafting vocal textures with Stargate

Full video available exclusively on mwtm.org/starg...
All-star producer duo, Stargate, reveal the vocal processing techniques that they used on 'Dancing With A Stranger' by Sam Smith and Normani.
Welcome back for another series led by the hit-making production and songwriting team Stargate! This instalment focusses on the creation of 'Dancing With a Stranger', the 2019 chart-topping single performed by Sam Smith and Normani. Tor and Mikkel revisit their introduction to Sam and collaborative history, then explain how they opted for a “less safe” approach to writing this song. The duo takes you through the multi-track session to explain how the parts were formed, revealing the synth patches, drum samples, and plug-in settings used to craft the sound of the record. Furthermore, they share their opinions on vocal microphones, elaborate on their tracking and ITB chains, and discuss key aspects of their highly efficient workflow!

The more I learn about top producers, the more I realize how much they actually mix their songs before sending them to mixing engineers. Very interesting.

@@audunlarssonkleveland4789 They certainly don’t do any mastering whatsoever. As for mixing, they do quite a bit to set the vibe/sound but then send it over to guys like Serban Ghenea who take it to the next level.

@@CalebFry00 They do a light mix. the engineer that gets it will know the route they want to take. Sometimes they will even leave an instrument as is if it sounds fine. Not all the instrumentation is that lucky, but CLA and Many Marroquin have both spoke on this. Bob Katz also says that he wont even master a record if it doesn't need it. That's part of being an engineer, knowing when things sound great as is.

Vocal processing videos from this series, always amaze me. Although most of the time the recipe is the same, it's beautiful to witness how differently each producer shapes and colors the vocals. Good job guys!

Daw is just a preference of workflow you can implement this by taking notes on the plugins since they are universal with daws. Really what you need is soundtoys, Valhalla, etc and when you do transfer to protools it’ll all be there

Listen to everything. Listen to how it's affecting the source and ask if it's adding anything positive to it. Then you EQ and blend with the rest of the material and listen for the same things. You will never know until you listen....a lot.....

If you offered a month-to-month subsription without having to commit to a year, i probably would have been subsribed for two years. Its just the fear of having a bad month financially and not being able to pause that keeps me from committing to a yearly agreement.
