The Crackerbox Jimmy. I was privileged to drive one in the early 90s harvesting potatoes. 6-71 and a Spicer compound 4&4, and geared for running fast, I could barely get up to 4th direct on the open road. Bogging in the field with a GVW of 70000lbs, the old 238 would roar even in lo-lo 1st. Nothing on the truck worked unless it was important, the leaking exhaust made it hard to see the far rear-view mirror unless there was a cross wind, and I did wear ear protectors. The steering wheel had 1/4 turn of slack, and of course was pulled by hand; a bit of grease on the king pins every day sure helped. I think that truck is gone now, something now I wish I had prevented.

Was a TV series in the 50s. I think cannonball? Used the GMCs as the theme truck. The Astro was like a space ship when it came out and the 8-71 was the engine! Then came the cummins 350/big cam 400 then the kitty cat 3406, so long 71-92 series Detroit Those were the days!!

My uncle drove for a outfit that had three ca.1966-67 GMC Crackerboxes, all day cabs, ran around delivering for a local pipe company. They were TERRIBLE, even by the standards of the day, I remember the drivers griping about the cab layout and design, among other things They ran the little fleet of them until the tractors were about 10-12 years old and replaced them with IHC Transtars.

You either loved the Emery’s & Crackerboxes or hated them. I had seen them growing up, didn’t care that much at the Tim, then I saw one up close...well, I just couldn’t let them junk it! I made an offer on the Crackerbox , waited until he called me 3 weeks later, then went to pick it up. It sure grew on me! That truck just had attitude and I had to have it! Thanks for sharing.🥰

Song made my ears bleed but those pictures more than made up for it. I so miss those days when not just trucks but cars also had so much distinct individuality. The upside of better technology brought with it the inevitable downside of mundane, cookie cutter, aesthetically sleep inducing boredom of design.
