Well done Paul Allen for explaining the ‘Why’ of Capability and Cp and Cpk so clearly.
Hands down the best, most concise video I've seen on the subject. Fantastic!!

Good to hear from Rupert - I use SPC XL from WWW.Sigmazone.com. you can get a 10 day trial to take a good look at it...much better tool than minitab for day to day engineering...
While creating your control chart for the first time? What's a reasonable sample size you can use and what would be the justification for that sample size? In other words, how many data points do I need and how do tell that this is enough? Is it subjective?
@paulallen5321

Michael - good to hear from you. 40 data points hands off the machine (no adjustments) 40 is a statistical sample size, you could calculate it but it would land around 40 anyway...this will be the best data you've ever collected...

Hi Paul. My tutor has only given me one batch of measurements with a total frequency of 100. He wants me to perform an SPC analysis on the first task and perform a Process Capability study. It really confuses me because I only have one set of data and I've seen alot of people draw distribution curves for SPC analysis. Does that mean that I have to draw two sets of Cp/Cpk graphs. Also... with only one batch of information how do I know where to move the distribution curve over too in order to calculate Cpk?

Fair play to your lecturer, he's making you do it thoroughly. In that case, job one is to plot the 100 points on a run chart. As part of that exercise. Work out the moving range. In other words take away data point 2 from data point 1 and then 3 from 2, 4 from 3 etc and plot that data on a run chart..

It's me - good to hear from you, 0.75 is a problem. But you have to identify all the inputs to your process and control each one as well as you can. If you do that the Cp will improve...
