I have seen this gentleman a couple times in videos, but they never showed all this. I am super excited to find this series and watch the other videos! My dream is to one day be able to have a custom pair of shows. It would be amazing if it was from this gentleman. I have very hard feet to fit and have never had show that are good for my feet....Unless foam flip flops count. It does worry me that he said shoes that Don't fit can't destroy your feet. But that would explain why my feet have never been the same after wearing a certain pair of sandals. They were like a hard foam with arch support (never had that type of shoe) and I thought my feet needed to get used to them. They did stop hurting after awhile, and I thought they must have just needed to be broken in, or my feet to get used to it. But after wearing them for winter, my feet really started hurt and got messed up for a whole. They still get way more sore then they used to. Anyway tried wearing them this year and it started all over and I decided it just wasn't worth going over that again. Sire hope they didn't hurt my feet permanently. Love the boot this gentleman makes and sure hope to some day feel what heaven on your feet feels like.

I've worn boots everyday for 20+ years. I've never had them custom made, but higher quality is a better investment. Even with daily wear I get 7-10 years out of a pair. You're not saving money if you have to replace them sooner. Also keep an eye on your soles and heals. If you don't get them resoled soon enough you'll ruin the boots.

For example, you can try on two pairs of boots of the same size and style and they will fit very differently. And good luck finding a boot store in the NY/NJ area....not so easy anymore. Kirby, I am just at the title segment but boy oh boy you would not believe how long I have been waiting for this! I am British, live in Austria but for 16 years lived in Canada. Since childhood I have loved cowboy boots and when I moved to Canada and visited the US a lot I got the chance to purchase several pairs. If they fit right I maintain they are the most comfortable footwear one can wear! My favourites are a vintage pair of NOS Justin’s made in the USA in the 1980’s (Justin were wonderful in going through their records to ascertain the history of them. They are in full quill black Ostrich and I love them! Believe it or not they are my go to dress footwear for when I attend classical music concerts in Vienna, people always comment and say how much they love them!

I’m old and there’s not a chance in hell I’m getting a nice pair of boots like these but I’m taking a break from the cyst/pimple videos I usually watch at 1 AM. I think I need to mix things up a bit. All things considered… It is 45 minutes of boot fitting… It’s a good video. Plus, unlike some videos, it never made me nauseous… Great job!

Well done, Mr. Allison. I was going to say that most boot wearers in Texas or other hot climes prefer a thicker cotton or even wool sock that will breathe. Perhaps you have discovered this? I would say most prefer over the calf or at least mid calf fitment. 11/2" above mid calf is the preferred height, depending on the length of you calf. There is a Jerry Jeff Walker song about Capitol Saddlery where Charlie Dunn worked. He even worked on my factory made boots, but I never had the luxury of having a pair made for me by him.

Kirby: For someone who only wears dress shoes and socks to match, you will probably end up with boots that are not wide enough to accept thick socks, which you might prefer if you are breaking in new boots. Why not ask the bootmaker for his advice, rather than not knowing what to say, or preferring the dress socks?

  • @drewpointkouski6571

Agreed, rather than saying he only wears thin socks, Kirby should've purchased thick boot socks for cowboy boots. I fear his expensive new cowboy boots will ultimately be uncomfortable, especially during break-in, as you stated!

Allen Sandusky I find myself surprised regarding the lack of technology as well, particularly in regards to last making. As much as I enjoy a master craftsman carrying on traditional methods, I can’t help but think a person’s foot could be 3D scanned in much less time with much greater precision, then a custom last could be 3D printed.

Allen Sandusky There are a few companies that try this, but at this point it is all very gimmicky. It is kianda like Chess - it takes a master’s intimidation to really nail the last just correctly.

Allen Sandusky I get what you are saying! I have a prosthetic and I have been to a place that does the electronic scans and it never fits as well as when they do a casting process. I imagine this is how it works with this process as well. Some things technology changes are good, but others haven’t been perfected enough through technology to beat the traditional methods.

Until there is a "3D Scanner App" for feet, this method seems to be pretty close. I think I would add standing in some form of mold-able foot bed to get a more detailed shape of the actual bottom of the foot, since that is what we stand on.
