Cover-Ups, Removals and Unfinished Business | Tattoo Artists React

There are a thousand different reasons why a person may choose to get a cover-up tattoo, and given that they’re dealing with their own skin, it’s clearly their personal choice. That being said, we wondered, how do artists feel when they see their work covered up? What happens when a tattoo artist sees a piece of art that they have put their blood, sweat and tears into creating disappear from the earth thanks to a little laser treatment and another tattooer? Let’s find out!
Inked has rounded up all of your favorite tattooers for another season of Tattoo Artists React. This season we’ll grill them about the biggest mistake they’ve ever made, how they approach doing job stoppers, what it feels like to see that their work has been covered up and more. You’ll marvel as they struggle to figure out which celebrities aren’t inked and laugh until your sides hurt as they tell us about the worst clients they’ve ever had to deal with. It’s going to be a season filled with excitement, hilarity and even the occasional tear. New episodes will be posted every Friday.

That girl that said she got pissed when other people finished her in progress tattoos when she moved is ridiculous. Do you expect your customers with half done tattoos to wait months and months until you come back to visit or fork out more cash to travel to where you moved? Nobody wants to walk around with an unfinished tattoo for half a year.

sometimes clients flake on having their tattoos finished and you dont hear from them for ages. You can give months notice to people you may be moving and they still make no attempt to have things finished. There all also people who just get half way through an awesome piece then do something dumb like letting their cousins housemate finish it at home in their basement or whatever. ..... then come back to you begging to fix it. It goes both ways - you put 110% into a piece for someone only to have your artwork completed by someone else - yeah, it can be disheartening. Usually more hours go into designing a piece than actually tattooing it, so it is a shame when another artist gets to complete something that wasnt theirs 🤷‍♀️

I had an outline done and the artist had suddenly moved 300+ miles away with barely a notice and they were gone for 2 years so I personally decided to have an old co-worker of theirs finish because I wanted to support the shop and for all I knew at that point the artist was never coming back and I didn't want to travel all that way for the same colors I got from the ex coworker. The original artist came back for a weekend and I met up with them and they were PISSED! Like dude I waited 2 years for you with no response fuck off

and @Morgan Chenoa you move away and expect clients to just pause their own ink work for whenever you may or may not show up again? You do not gain any ownership or rights to our bodies when you lay down some partial work. If you move away and I decide to move on to another artist then that is my prerogative and, as long as you were paid for services rendered before you bailed on your clients mid-work, you have absolutely no right to be cross with a client over that... That shows a negative business mindset towards clientele as you do not own us... How about do not start a piece on someone you cannot finish before you move away?? pretty easy solution so us peasant clients do not hurt your fragile ego if you up and move away. I used to want to get one of your pieces on my travels but not with that kind of ego.

I have a tattoo I may be planning to cover up. It's a forget-me-not I got for my grandma, who despite being very against tattoos can appreciate a nice floral one.. However, we had a HUGE falling out after I broke contact with some abusive relatives (Grandma was very much the 'just suffer in silence when you're abused' type of person and wanted me to do the exact same), and it made me regret getting a meaningful tattoo for someone I thought knew me better than anyone else (she came up with the idea, and even went as far as to sit next to me as I got it). I plan to get it covered by the same artist who put the flower there, though I'll have to wait for a bit due to the corona virus and money-related issues. I get that as an artist, seeing your work get covered up sucks. I get that sometimes you may get pissed a client didn't tell you their concerns and I get generally feeling disapointed your work is being undone, but at the end of the day, the only one who decides what to do with a body is the owner of said body.

That was my thought. Maybe I get it if she like just moved one town over or maybe like only an hour away. But if I live in like Portland Maine, and you move to like Moscow, and have no intent on coming back besides maybe holidays. Am I supposed to just wait for you a whole year or 3 ? Nah fam.

Yeah, I didn’t get her response. No artist wants to see their work finished by someone else. That is understandable. But you have to take the circumstances of WHY they had someone else finish your work. Sometimes, it’s necessary. And if she’s taking her sweet time trying to get back to me, or one of us has to move a considerable distance, do tell why I still need to “wait” for you? I’d like for her to elaborate on her opinion.

I never minded clients removing or covering my work. They paid me for it. Their body. If they don't like it it's their business. Never liked the arrogance of many artists 🤷‍♂️

The way I see it is the client also spent just as long in the chair and spent hundreds or thousands of dollars, so if they're not happy with it they have every right to change it. And it's not always about the quality of the art itself either, sometimes people change their aesthetics and interests. Should that person have to live with a piece that they don't like anymore and look at it every day just to spare some dude's feelings? I don't think so.

I can appreciate that the Tattoo Artists love the finished product of their labour but once that machine is off and cash has exchanged hands that piece becomes my property by law. This art just happens to be imprinted fairly permanently in my skin and a part of my body as well as spirit and who I am overall. I have tattoos all over and, with the exception of the Hotdog and Cupcake on my left shin that were done as part of a Christmas charity event [Toys 4 Tats] I put months and months, in one case years, of careful thought and reflection into where and what I want Inked on my body. Unfortunately, the second tattoo I ever got will be falling victim to the full right arm sleeve my current Artist and I have designed in collaboration and laid down a bunch of line work. I am okay covering that upper right arm ink up with the shoulder blade to hand sleeve because it was my 2nd piece (I'm 32), is fading, and to be frank is not very good when compared to all my other work. I'm not trying to disrespect the artist who did it but she was still pretty new, just out of apprenticeship, and it just does not hold up to the caliber of all my other work I had before and after it. The cash changed hands so it is mine now anyway. my skin; my choice. it is a pretty cut and dry issue.

Shit, I have an outline, it's gotta be 26-27, more? years old. Dude was a friend, things were said, no reason to air laundry that old. He gets handed a tattoo gun I get his first tattoo. I think it will stay as is. Not getting it removed, not getting it finished. Just there. A reminder.

I'm very happy to hear that all these people are good artists, but just in skill but mindset, they're proud of their work or the person's interests, life, or whatever might change. I personally like working with my hands, it I built at that for someone in 10 years down the line the deck it wears down or they want to change the look of their house I'm not going to take it personally. Eventually everything will change

If you move and expect a customer to just sit with an unfinished tattoo, you’re insane. I’m not driving to your new town just for you to tattoo me when life fluctuates, and I’m definitely not waiting an unknown amount of time for you. Why not just go to another artists who specializes in that same style and feel complete?
