What is so cool about Courtney is that you can compare her to a lot of people but you also realize she is unique. You can tell she truly feels the music and how she moves is just how she’s feeling the music.

@@mmcpa lol, yea, I got what you meant. If you've ever had to write a song, assemble it, produce it and finally present it to the world with no clue how they're going to receive it...it's a huge mental (and sometimes financial) undertaking. Most artist who cover songs give the original artists a proper degree of respect that I just don't see here and many CH fans have made comments similar to yours, even to the point of being derogatory. I know there's no harm in it, but it just doesn't sit well with me. This is literally like walking into an art museum, adding a splash of pink to a picture, claiming it for yourself and patting yourself on the back for accomplishing something far greater than the original artist. I know I'm thinking too much into it, but it's a perspective to consider when you're a fan of a cover artist.

You got this exactly right! She is a raw powerhouse operating on instinct and a generational set of vocal chords. This girl can rock! Dont suffer the Joe Cocker connection with neophytes who dont get it. Courtney loses herself in the music and reacts organically. She is not contrived, she is all about the release of something completely uninhibited to bring her performance to another level. It is a beautiful thing to watch. So unique. All the greats have it. Thanks for your thoughtful reaction, and welcome to your Courtland journey! Since you are relatively new to Courtney, I thought I would give you some background info on this fabulous singer. Courtney was born on July 6, 2004. She lives in Hesleden, a village near Hartlepool (North East England). She lives in the center of Hesleden, in a modest looking house, together with her father, Paul Hadwin (born 1986), mother, Annmarie Hadwin (born 1987), younger brother, Paul Hadwin (born ~2007), and younger sister, Melissa Hadwin (born 2009). The family has arranged the attic of the house into a music studio, where Courtney can practice and record. She has also held several Instagram live sessions with her fans in that studio, many are available on YT. Courtney has sung ever since she can remember. In 2015, she took part in TenStar 2015, where she reached the final stage. In 2017, she took part in The Voice Kids UK, a competition where she also reached the final stage. In that competition, she performed Nutbush City Limits, Dancing in the Street, I Feel Good, and I Am Telling You. Courtney's international breakthrough happened in season 2018 of America's Got Talent. Her audition (a cover of Hard To Handle) was a huge success: one YT video of that audition has got over 168 million views. In AGT she also performed covers of Papa's Got A Brand New Bag (quarter finals), Born To Be Wild (semifinals), and River Deep Mountain High (finale). She also performed (out of the competition proper) a duet with the English band The Struts (shortened version of two songs: Could Have Been Me and Piece Of My Heart). Courtney finished 6th, a remarkable performance for a 14 year old! In early 2019, Courtney took part in AGT The Champions, where she sang her original Pretty Little Thing. She didn't make it to the final. In February 2019, Courtney was invited by The Struts to their Newcastle concert. Together, they performed the same songs as in AGT (but full versions this time): Could Have Been Me and Piece Of My Heart. Courtney has been coached by Julie Miles (Vocal Ovation) since August 2015. She decided to finish school (which she disliked) early, in 2020, and graduated by home schooling, so she can now better concentrate on her singing career. In December 2018, Courtney was signed by Simon Cowell (the current status of this contract seems to be unclear due to subsequent changes in the companies involved). Her first album has been delayed by the pandemic, but she has a YT channel, with six covers so far: Sign Of The Times, Sucker, Someone You Loved, Old Town Road, What's Love Got To Do With It, Happy Xmas (War Is Over). Courtney was scheduled for "Woodstock 50" in August 2019, but the festival was canceled. Courtney is scheduled to perform at the FM4 Frequency festival in St Pölten (Austria), on August 20, 2021. Before I finish, I have to warn you that a small but loud minority of her fans are fairly fanatic, so I would advise you against ever uttering anything critical about Courtney in your reactions. I'll give only one example. In the AGT semifinals, one of the judges, Mel B, criticized Courtney's performance (Born To Be Wild): "You did what you did, and I loved it, but I still felt those nerves, and I am not used to that with you." You have no idea the flurry of slander and libel that Mel B faced because of those comments. Here are some of the ones that decency allows me to reproduce: "Mel B's comments were just plain nuts.", "No need to mince words about Mel B.", "I thought I was being gentle and reserved. You should hear how I categorize it when it's not for publication." You have been warned. I hope you will react to the songs by Courtney mentioned above, and more!

Julian Holton: very good detail on Miss Courtney Hadwin. The only thing I would say differently is about warning him about the fans. I think that was more of a defensive posture due to all the hate she was getting from other fans of other artists. I'm sure you know it was real bad for her. So her fans were extremely defensive to anything negative about Courtney. And tbh, their are some who still are but not many of those comment anymore today. But the fans who do are very quick to correct any wrong facts that we all know about her. But usually not so aggressively. Although I've read one or two on one of his videos who did. But I'm sure he's gotten that from other artists fans too. That's social media for you. Otherwise a great summary. A few more things could be added but then you would end up writing a short story about her. Or even a good size book if you wanted to.

Oh wait I did see one false fact you wrote that should be cleared up. She did not quit school. She finished early and graduated by home schooling. Also Simon Cowell who owned majority of Syco Entertainment bought out Sony for his TV talent shows full control from Sony (who is the mother company of Arista Records) last July. Sony now retained all rights to any artists Simon signed. But we don't know 100% for sure if Courtney is still signed with Sony since some have noticed that her named has been removed from their artists list and it's been said that she no longer follows Sony. I haven't checked into that yet, because it doesn't really matter much to me. I feel she looks happy and her album is still in the works. If Sony is involved it will help her marketing wise, but they will also eat up her profits.

@HIstory Buff Btw, If you happen to choose Courtney's "Love Hurts" for a reaction. The audio on that is not very good and I've enhanced it to sound much better. As the one that's uploaded has the sound coming out of her laptop speakers and recorded through her cell phone to go live on TikToc or Instagram. That song is one of her best singing performances though and that's why many people will ask for it. I don't have any editing experience with combining video with audio and syncing them together or I would put a video up with the better audio I have. One day I'll find time to learn a program to do that. Also her stage presence is phenomenal. You can't teach that to anybody. Trust me when I say I'm starting to believe in reincarnation. Not a religious person but Courtney isn't doing karaoke singing. This girl has talent like she's knows everything there is to know about the industry for many years. Another girl that blows my mind is Angelina Jordan (note: I just saw a video of Angelina singing Moon River in Japanese). These babies have a style of singing. Redirect the music and lyrics to make it their own. They understand the timing and the breathing and the different styles of music at that young age. Thanks HB for another Courtney reaction. I've enjoyed both Courtney reaction so much I had to subscribe. There's a whole lot of Courtney's videos out there, from a very young age to now. Watching her from a young age till now you can see how she's progressed to what you see now. She has a very intense vocal exercises she does everyday to keep her voice strong, almost like a body builder would for his muscles. Dedication to be better at her vocals is why we haven't seen the best from Courtney yet. Courtney will always make today's preformance better than yesterday's and tomorrow's even better. I must say that you were spot on in your comments about Courtney. When she was 11 or 12 during an interview she was asked about her singing and what advice she had for other singers. Her reply was, to not worry about what you look like and how pretty you are, it's all about your vocals and what you sound like. Even now people will comment on a live about some the face she has when performing. She'll say do I, I never noticed, oh well I don't care. That's Courtney being Courtney, she throws everything she has into her vocals, heart, body, and soul nothing else matters. She has also said that when she goes on stage she kinda knows how she's going to move on stage, but once the music starts she ends up going in a nother direction. That's just a little bit to let you know that you have pegged Courtney right in your comments. Ed, Bert, and Sherry have left some great videos for your next Courtney reaction. We'll all be waiting for your next Courtney reaction when you have the time. I know we're all looking forward to it.

Thanks for the great reaction. I've loved watching Courtney's career. You might want to listen to an amazing young Russian singer. Diana Ankudinova is 15 years old in this video, singing a cover of Chris Isaak's Wicked Game, giving it a more "tribal" sound. She's a contralto, even at the age of 15, and a commanding stage presence. She is performing on the Russian TV show You Are Super, a show for disadvantaged children to display their talents that they otherwise would not be able to. You'll have to pause the video every 20-30 second to avoid blocking, or otherwise alter the video Diana (dee-ah-na) was abandoned by her abusive mother at the age 3 and placed in an orphanage, diagnosed with cognitive impairment. Her adoptive mother had her enroll in singing lessons because her speaking was severely limited due to abuse and neglect. Her singing talent was immediately noticed and the rest, as they say, is history. It's a safe prediction that you'll have goosebumps and say that's the most unique voice you've ever heard. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aZ6qj6aKnsmYhbw.html And a link to the original Wicked Game: kzread.info/dash/bejne/n4OettmehbPaY7Q.html

Hi HB. Great to see you back to more Courtney. I’ve got to say, I absolutely love the format of your reactions, where you listen to the full original first and then the cover. That’s critical for someone like Courtney that is so creative and makes every song she sings her own. She will never do a cover unless she has her own take on how a song could or should have been sung, so her versions are always completely different. ‘Old Town Road’ set so many chart records and was a massive hit, but I must say, after hearing Courtney’s version, I have no desire to hear the original ever again. Courtney didn’t just make the original her own, she completely dismembered it and put it back together as a new original. She took a country/hip hop song and transformed it into a rock anthem. Courtney was 14 when she sang these 4 songs that became known as the cover sessions on the EP. She was in the middle of working on her album in London when she took a day out to record these four covers, so all were done in a single day. You’ll notice that the musicians have the same clothes in all four songs. The minimalist approach was because she was in the studio at the time and had limited space. You’ll see she has very little room to move, which is what Courtney does best. After AGT, where Courtney sang only 60’s and 70’s classic rock, so many people thought that was all she could do. So these 4 covers were released to both show the amazing vocal versatility that Courtney has, as well as to show that her style of passion and emotion, so long forgotten, was totally relevant to today’s music. So she took massively popular songs and adapted them to her style and in virtually everyone’s opinion, blew the originals out of the water. The two of the four you haven’t reacted to are more ballad types that highlight Courtney’s absolutely beautiful voice, although with a touch of the signature Courtney grit. I would suggest after you react to these remaining two covers, ‘Someone You Loved’ and ‘Sign of the Times’, which can be found on her KZread channel, you react to some of her AGT performances, because you’ve never seen what a stage dominating performer Courtney is. Start with the Audition, which went viral and now has over 500M views and turned Courtney into a worldwide phenomenon. For all of us, Courtney is the best thing to happen to music in decades and truly the voice of a lifetime.

Hi again HB, I’m glad you came back to react to Courtney again. This was a fantastic reaction again. Can already see you are getting addicted to Courtney! I agreed with all your observations, except maybe the Joe Cocker one lol. Courtney is a free spirit when it comes to movement. Her songs she rehearses again and again. I could see how excited you were with what Courtney did with “Old Town Road”. I heard the original once and that was enough. Courtney takes a so-so song ( and I know there are probably millions of people out there who would disagree with me) and brings the song a whole new life. She is amazing especially knowing that she was only 14 here. She will be 17 in July so no going out with the guys for a drink yet! I know TC mentioned the other two songs on Courtney’s Cover Sessions EP for you to react to next. Of those two songs I have a particular favorite which is “Sign of the Times”. That song really showcases her incredible voice IMO and it would be great if you did that one next. Thank you for pushing on to get this one up. I saw your notice that it had been blocked twice. I really enjoy your reactions and can’t wait for the next!

Another really good Courtney reaction, HB! Thanks! The following year after her AGT performances, she recorded four cover songs and put them out as an album she called "Cover Sessions". This was in 2019 when she was ONLY 14-years old. So far, you have reviewed 2 of those 4 "Cover Sessions" songs, "Sucker" and "Old Town Road". Hard to believe those were performances of a 14-year old (roughly an 8th grader in middle school), right? Courtney used the same two musicians for all four "Cover Sessions" songs. You were correct. That percussion instrument is literally a box that is used in some Latin American music which is why it's called a cajon (cah-hon) which is the Spanish word for box (caja). Those four "Cover Sessions" songs can be downloaded on all major music apps, Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, etc. So, if you like any of these enough, you can stream & download them. Courtney has also suggested to all that they sign up for her Spotify channel since that's where her first original music will drop in a few months. We realize that you may not get to the next Courtney reaction as quickly. We understand and appreciate the time you take to review her music. I appreciated your insight into this reaction and look forward to your next Courtz review. I would suggest that you please react to the last two songs from this "Cover Sessions" album which can be found in her YT Vevo account, here - kzread.info/dron/J0UIOws33p5zRE6Eul3rlw.html THANK YOU!!! 🙏

As usual, she owns the covers she does. I cannot wait for her originals. As far as stage performing, she absolutely owns the stage she is on without question, totally mesmerizing. Courtney flows with the music, doesn't choreograph like a Beyonce or J-Lo. She feels her music, and loses herself in it. That's what makes her an already outstanding performer.

Hi HB. Simon from 'Rosehill Dairy" here. So glad you decided Courtney deserved more time from you. It is a matter of taste I know whether one likes a certain music style. I only subscribe to youtubers whom I feel add that certain something extra to their reactions. You do that very well. I also like to explore other artists and often feel that many viewers only watch the same artist without taking the time to watch other reactions but not of their favorite. I think there were four or five performances which would give you a great idea of how she works with them. There she was 13 when she started and 14 when she finished. Not a fan of the original song at all. There's a few different videos of it. How it became the longest #1 hit ever is way beyond me. Courtney's said she heard the way she does it in her head and chose to make her own version of it. The mic drop was more about her doing these 4 cover sessions to show she can do more than what many thought she was capable, and this cover was the last one of the series of the 4 covers. The Mic drop was that she's finished now. The 2 session musicians loved playing with her as you may have noticed in "Sucker" from all their smiling at each other. They were very impressed by her from some of their comments on their Instagram pages they posted. I hoped they are the same guys on her originals they were supposedly recording with back then. We shall see. She was 14 when she did all 4 of these cover sessions. Nothing better than improvisation when it comes to playing music. You are right about her needing a stage and showing her full potential, although being stuck in a tight room gave her more control of her moves she's really capable of, that some people couldn't appreciate when she was on AGT. She's just a power house vocally and stage presence wise. Keep these coming. You seem like someone who won't forget about this future starlet. I'm glad I stayed up late and caught this one before hitting the hay.

Hey, HB, you do a good service by playing the original first. That's the best way to showcase Courtney's creativity. You also give thoughtful commentary. There are several suggestions in the comments, but since you wanted to see what she can do onstage (hint: she devours it), I would suggest first you react to her most famous video: 2018 AGT audition (currently scoring 600million+ total views), any of her other AGT performances, including "Piece of My Heart" with the Struts and "Pretty Little Thing" on 2019 AGT Champions. I will subscribe the next time you react to Courtney! BTW, I understand your reference to the great Joe Cocker; like him, Courtney does not focus on choreography--she just moves with the music in her.

You pinpointed EXACTLY what I just realized. She can make songs rock like hell and give this sort of performance WITHOUT the complementary musical accompanyment. Her voice needs to be front and center at forefront of her music so that every other instrument takes a back seat (instead of being complementary). I don't think I've ever heard this before!!! I don't think you can point to any specific trait that makes this happen. Plenty of other artists have good range (young Robert Plant and Steven Tyler had MUCH more than Courtney). Plenty have just as much power. Plenty can match her in character and control. The songs she covers are not real improvements over the originals (the originals are equally impressive). The ONE standout simply seems to be her ability to dominate everything else going on with her vocals. It is so unique and I don't think I've heard this from any other big artist, past or present.

  • @bertpainter8385

I have to say my piece with one thing you mentioned. I agree with you that each of some other singers of the past have what Courtney has. Maybe I need to reverse that and say Courtney has a little bit of everything some have. (I can't say "plenty" of singers do or did. ) The thing I can't acknowledge is that the songs she covers are not real improvements. With anyone who loves the classics of the past and also many of today's listeners, has said many times over point black, that she makes every cover her own and way better in many cases makes them her own and changes the song to completely different song,. But I think I get your point overall. And she is very unique. She recently said she don't want to be the same as anyone. She wants to create something new in music and be different from anything else people know of. I'd say she's well on her way. To think she was only 14 when she recorded these in that back room studio while taking a break on her new music. 15 when they were actually released to the public.

I don't care how old you are, if you're a serious fan of music, you'd immediately think Joplin. Sad thing for this girl, I think 16 year old girl at the time of this cover - is two-fold. It's the social media age and anyone and everyone is heard, no matter how pathetic they are. Actual talents get get lost in the miasma, because there's only so much content one can consume. The other fold is what our kids are aware of, which points back - yet again- to social media... and the failure of parents in the, you guessed it, social media age.
