Courageous Conversations: Diagnosed at 28 with Early Onset Dementia, Part 1

Dawn talks with Teepa about the challenges of noticing changes in her mid-20s daughter, and trying to get a handle on what was happening. Dawn and her daughter faced issues dealing with multiple health systems and the pre-conceived beliefs of a mental health provider to finally get her daughter’s young onset dementia accurately diagnosed.

My husband was diagnosed with probable alzheimer's disease on 19th December, all we got from the neurologist was, 'have a Merry Christmas and get your affairs in order' and 'we can't give you any medications'. We are currently in the UK, but moving to Florida in January, as my husnand is a US veteran.

I truly emphatize with you Dawn, you have been through a lot as well and now seeing your daughter progress with her FTD, I mean I can't imagine myself going through this. Her son is so blessed to have you and all the other people who's trying to help. That's what's important I guess, having good support network and thanks to Teepa, we can find answers on how to address these challenges associated with dementia. Looking forward to watch Part 2.

Teepa, My husband was diagnosed with Lewy Body dementia. I would love to have you share what you can about this. For years we were told it was complex PTSD. Finally after many tests and Dr visits, we were sent to a neurologist who could land the plane for us. I am a nurse and have worked with dementia patients in the past. Living it has been eye opening for myself and our family. While this is not straight up Alzheimers, it definitely is in the realm. Thanks.
