Hey lesley i have a question for you about a very diff kind of junco I have had some privilege to watch and i did take a few pix but unfortunately i had wild turkeys on other side of house eating so anyways i think its a junco its among the hundreds i have right now.white head n some what black body. My opinion it looks more of those budgies..but ik it cant be. Have you ever seen or heard of white headed dark eyed juncos?! N im in New England USA n i think there nesting in my barns..ty
@LesleytheBirdNerd
Жыл бұрын
Hi, from what you described it could be a Junco that has Leucism. It is a genetic mutation that results in a total or partial reduction of color in a bird's plumage.

@@LesleytheBirdNerd very interesting, what are the dimensions for a chickadee box? Hole size and so on? Thank you.
I've definitely grown to appreciate chickadees over the years. I used to take them for granted, but they're really incredible little birds.
Thank you for letting us know what a special bird Phoebe was. I remember watching the longer version of this nest box with my partner, and we found that video amazing. When the littlest almost-fledgling lingered in the nest box and pecked at the walls, we felt we could really relate. Phoebe was strong and brave, and a great mom. I have a poster of a chickadee with the words, "To Dee or Not to Dee, that is the question," and I think Phoebe and other chickadees would say "OBVIOUSLY DEE." They are so energetic and never miss an opportunity to Dee, and knowing that gives me life.
I had come to know of Phoebe for less than 10 minutes and was deeply saddened by her passing...

It was a great loss for me. She was wonderful and had a distinctly large head even for a chickadee.
This was such a fascinating, intimate, heartwrenching, and heartwarming look into the lives of these precious creatures. I hope all the fledgelings continue to thrive for as long as healthy chickadee lifespans allow. Thank you ❤ for sharing.
These birds are such good parents.
Mama, papa, and babies - all so adorable! I'm so glad that at least their first clutch of babies all escaped danger and survived. Rest in peace, Phoebe.
I love your channel so much. Most people are oblivious to birds, not bothering to realize how important they are to our environment and generally the beauty of nature they bring, and also what effort they have to make to thrive and just survive. Would love to see you do a feature on mockingbirds, one of the most amazing birds I've ever encountered. Thank you for your wonderful content. It fills my heart and adds so much to my life. 🤗
I can’t rave enough about what Terry brings to the birding community. His bird houses are BY FAR the best in North America and his videos (as well as the accompanying audio) are jaw-dropping. I remember every Sunday evening’s ‘Animal Kingdom’ when I was young and Terry’s ‘Bird Walking Down’ KZread channel is the modern version of that old show (only better!).
Thanks for sharing that story. I love the part when the last fledgling looked back on last time and flew out. RIP Phoebe and it's good to know she does live on through her fledglings. :)
Lesley, thank you so much for this wonderful video! I just bought a nest box for (hopefully) Carolina wrens. I hung it from a tree branch and hope none of my five squirrels bother it - but I feed them well and they are into everything. Little Phoebe’s gumption in defending her nest from the starling (twice) and the squirrel wrenched my heart, especially since the second clutch of eggs failed and she has disappeared. What a terrific mother she was. Best wishes for all the nesting birds now!

Good luck with your nest box! Make sure the entry is good size for wrens. Squirrels will have a hard time getting in. There are also metal wire things that can go outside the entry hole to help deter stuff like snakes too. Hope someone calls your nest home and makes a cute family.
These may very well be one of my favorite birds. And how sweet all those little black caps were in the nest box. Remarkable little birds.
I love chickadees. They have been one of my favorite birds for many years. They are such small birds and they attack living together food and survive the outdoors in wilderness. I just bought a chickadee bird house and will put it up. Very soon in hope that it is soon has chickadees in residence. Keep that deep love that you have for these beautiful birds.
I was being so happy all six made it and then you had the four at the end 😔 It's so sweet you named them, hopefully their lineage is long!
It's weird to see such a cute bird like a chickadee be vicious and mean, so the threat display Phoebe made was a bit funny to me! Chickadees like to land on my window and stare at my bearded dragon. They're so curious about him. lol
OMG so precious. I just love those sweet birds! Such a fierce mom! And yes their devotion as parents is something humans should take note of.
Love your educational content and storytelling! The best on KZread! The Chickadees are my mom's favorite birds. ♥

@@LesleytheBirdNerd love your stuff! Where are located? I’m in Northern Ontario so I’m pretty attached to the neighbourhood winter birds.
Our chickadees come to our yard for seeds, and the female knows I put out un-wound cotton balls for her - she uses them to build her nest when its time. Watching her pick through the cotton puffs and fly off is just hilarious. They fly very close to us, too. I got to see their brood last year, I want to say it was maybe 5 or 6 kids, we had chickadees all over the yard, haha. The two come into the yard daily, typically with the titmice. They are a bird crew not to miss!
Thank you for sharing this video, Lesley. Such beautiful little birds, and good parents too. I was sorry to hear Phoebe is no longer with us, but Inky is adorable. 😊🖤🤍😊
Cute little poofballs. I love watching little birds hop and move about because they look like they skip animation frames.
I made nest boxes for swallows, with the rather narrow horizontally cut opening to block out house sparrows (3/4 x 1 3/4"). After several years of no swallows, last year a pair of chickadees nested in one. It had no wood shavings, so the chickadees packed it with dog hair an inch or more deep. I'll add pine shavings this time, and build a taller box for swallows 9" deep with the same size entrance.
What a treat this video is, I have never seen chickadee's nesting...they are so tiny and adorable ! Yes, many birds are not so successful. I watch Eagle nests every season and at times things get sad, but its nature and this is how we learn about birds, so its a good thing. I love birds ! Happy Easter Lesley ! 🦅🪶🪶🐣🐦❤

Shows how important native trees are. The trees provide cavities for nesting birds, they provide the Caterpillars that the birds feed to their young. I also would imagine the bark and living wood, would protect the young from temperature extremes.
This was such a interesting video. I learned so much about what hard work goes into their little family. Thank you for bringing this to us.

Every time you talk about losing a bird it gets to me.
Thank you sooooo much Leslie. What an AWESOME video
I love watching my chickadees. I have a group living in my palm tree. They & the Tufted Titmouse will fuss at me if I disturb them eating from my feeders hanging on my front porch to go to my car. They are a lively group & often have to fight the house finch & Cardinals to eat also!! I just love my bird community outside my windows!! ❤❤️💖💓 Thank you Leslie for sharing info with us amateurs who have loved watching birds all our lives. ❤️💖💓🐦🐦🐧🦢🦆🦅🦉🦩🦚🪿
I wasn't sure where else to turn, and im hoping Leslie or any of you kind viewers can assist me. Above my front door is a porch light fixture, that hasnt worked in years, and is kinda cockeyed. A robin has chose that spot as a nesting area, and everytime I walk out the door or come up the walk to go in, she flies off in a panic. My worries are that if i keep startling her, her departure will eventually weaken the fixture, and cause it to flip down, dumping the nest and its contents on the porch, or she might dislodge the nest, or knock one of her eggs out in a panic. 1. Is it too early for her to have eggs? And if so, if i keep scaring her (unintentionally, just using the door as normal), will she eventually choose another nesting location? 2. Avoid using the front door at all? Theres a sliding glass door downstairs i can use, and its far enough away itd probably leave her in peace, and wait for her to move on? I really just dont want to be responsible for her losing her chicks. My heart couldnt take it.
Thanks so much for sharing another wonderful video like always 🐦🤗

Thank you, Jonathon. It's wonderful about you having chickadees visiting your feeders. They are so wonderful and pleasant to watch.
I've always had dogs who shed like crazy- a light, fluffy undercoat that 'blows' in springtime. It hasn't failed in years that in my walks all over the surrounding fields and woods, every intact nest I've seen (including squirrels and other small rodents) has been full of dog hair..
Likely got so excited over the extra secure luxury nesting site they tried for a second brood.
That is so heartwarming watching them.

Love your channel Leslie. Incredibly informative with incredible footage. I'm always so blown away at how tough and resourceful these birds are. Just when you couldn't think a chickadee could get any cuter, they give birth to miniature rounder versions of themselves.
I watched a couple of Ospreys building their nest last week.
I found a chickadee nest this morning...3rd time in my 65 years of living..they are busy with it 12 ft up a dead topped birch

@@LesleytheBirdNerd gust what I have a chickadees nest birdhouse, but what cam do I need
This is my first year getting a birdhouse, I put the Gilbertsons pvc bluebird house out and we had a pair of chickadees nest there. 8 eggs, all hatched and fledged on Saturday. I think one might have not made it it was kinda runty and couldn’t fly but I’m hoping all of them make it through to adulthood. Saw a male house wren checking out the house this morning and leaving a stick there.
They like midcentury modern. Very stylish birdies.

Happy Spring to all! My half dozen chickadee nest boxes had been worked over by some destructive squirrels. Talk about gnawing at the cedar box openings! I'm so excited right now. I've been watching your videos for a couple years now and in love with your chickadee friends. 3 days ago I was outside and saw my chickadee friends come up to the house, and then noticed THEY MADE A NEST I THE EVE OF MY HOUSE! Right above the bird feeder. They like me so much they decided to move in. Can't wait to meet their kids!
It interesting to watch the growth of the Chickadees.
Leslie, your channel is so amazing and informative, I just love it. It reminds me a lot of the old Marty Stouffer PBS channel series, Wild America. Thank you for what you do and share with us.
Another great video Lesley. You are a national treasure. I like chickadees as much as anyone, but I often can't follow their thinking. We have two decorative pots containing vertical birch sticks outside our front door. Currently there is a pair of chickadees digging a hole straight down from the top of one of the birch sticks. The hole is about 6" deep and they keep digging. If this is going to be a nest site, I wonder what they will do to keep the rain out. Has anyone seen this behaviour before?
Such a lovely video Lesley filled with heartwarming moments and the harsh realities of nature too! Loved your narration and story telling! It's Autumn here in Sydney and while we get to see immature birds from last season it's nice to tune into what's happening in Spring in another part of the world! 🙂
Happy Easter to you and yours Lesley! Thank you for another fascinating video of my favorite bird, they are so precious! I never saw chickadee nestlings before, having a camera inside gave a wonderful glimpse from Phoebe laying her eggs until the fledglings left the nest box. Thank you again!
