Couple Living Full-Time on a 40ft Steel Sailboat in a Northern Climate

Taryn and Logan from Wayward Life Sailing are an ambitious couple who are living full-time aboard their 3rd sailboat where they're learning, researching, and planning a future trip through the Northwest Passage.

The couple both have experience welding, which is one of the reasons why they chose a steel boat. They also think it'll be easier to repair in a range of temperatures compared to fiberglass, and it should also be sturdy enough to handle icy and uncharted waters.
In this video, they give us an honest look at their experience finding the perfect boat, learning to sail, living on a boat with a dog, and how the liveaboard experience compares to what they'd imagined it would be like (and there's a boat tour of course!).
Thanks for watching!

i have two boats and just sold a 15 meter.. but not yet got the boat i want and not yet planned fully. Thanks for your videos. what do you think i could afford to live with with savings of 240,000$ and a monthly income of 10,000$ ++??
I agree with the comfort of living in a small space, it does feel safe. I'm not a longterm boat person but I am a van person and that is a goal of mine. You've given me encouragement to continue with the goal. Thanks

♥️♥️♥️ You can do it I have done it I lived in a camper van for 15 years moved on a little sailboats for the summers and just finally got my live aboard boat moving on in May
We wish them safe sailing.❤
Freedom is priceless and the true meaning of life! I wish I could reach it in the near future😄
Small enough to 'feel hugged by my home'. Lovely way to express it. 💕
I love them both, they are very sincere and they learn from mistakes getting the best. Thank you for sharing.
I just wanted to say that I took my dog and cat with me when I crossed the Atlantic by ship from Montreal to Copenhagen back in the early 70s. The ship had a special deck for pets and I forget how my dog relieved himself (the cats were in large cages) but I have pictures of him with a mile-wide grin on his face while in the background the ship is rolling in a huge wave while he is steadfast with his legs apart and loving it. Such great memories. Animals adapt but I am sorry to hear that their dog will not pee on the boat. Training as a puppy may have fixed that but maybe an animal behaviorist could help them out.
What an amazing couple! Working together all the way through the off-grid living experience. God bless 🙏
Such a beautiful setup you have. Enjoy every second.
This is what I want in a few years! Steel is the way to go up in the North!
They are so sincere and I can see how much they love their dog. Fair winds.
Great video👍 I like how truthful and down to earth the couple are 💕
I love the honesty of your videos. Great one!

Lovely couple and a great experience they are living. I get sea sick so it's not an option for me unless I stayed docked. But being hugged by ones environment is the best.

Beautifully done video. Living on a boat is not something that I'd like to do, but watching this video was just great!
I want this life! Gosh, it seems like CA is the way to go. So beautiful. I love that boat too, its cost but has so much room. They are so perfectly fit for that lifestyle too. I wish I could go learn welding haha that is amazing! Go girl!
Great to see a young couple living their dream. The PNW is as fine a cruising ground as anywhere in the world. I hope to see you in the Gulf islands. I will be aboard my C&C 35. AL.

What a beautiful view❤️
So Inspiring guys! I just bought my first 30 foot sailboat last year and absolutely love it but also cant wait to get a slightly bigger boat. You did a great job illustrating what the difference between a 30 and 40 footer is. Doesnt sound like all that much more but its a LOT more boat. Keep it up guys I want to see more! Maybe some astroturf for that dog guys, and just spray it off or dip it in the ocean to "clean it". Holding your pee sucks!
fantastic job guys - you'll get there, keep your eye on the prize.
I have always wanted to do this. But I hate maintenance and I know that is a huge thing. It is key to have the skills to maintain yourself.

Do an aluminum boat… done a similar thing with a 60ft motor sailer. Aluminum has some advantages over steel.
I would love to go sailing around the world, but one question I've never seen answered by a youtuber is how one can get needed medication while sailing? Both my husband and I have a few meds that we need to take daily, for the rest of our lives, how difficult is it to deal with large amounts of meds when sailing (both from the "how do you store it so it doesn't get wet and ruined", and "how do you deal with declaring a thousand pills for the next year+ when you pull into port"?)
@sailingavocet
2 жыл бұрын
that makes it very tough. you would plan your adventures around where you can get your medications
@Eztliz

There are sailing doctors who provide a years worth of meds. And you do declare them. The only thing is you have to be mindful of is the fact that some medications that are legal in some places are not in others.

don't you y'all have a reverse osmosis system for water collection
I lived in an RV for years had to work every day to pay fuel as each time you moved was ten dollars and that was using every free space you could find, and now that list is getting smaller for the free spaces. I have this understanding from magazine like latitude 38 and others that this is happening with sail boats Too just not as fast as there are still alott of free places left. I hope just to have a sail boat as a home soon Will see.
