After learning to play guitar I perceive music so much differently to how I used to. It's actually really weird but fascinating, I no longer hear a song as one entity, but as multiple different pieces of a puzzle almost. The beat, rhythm, melody, chord progression, and baseline often stand out to me as independent of eachother yet work together in sync. It's a strange feeling but has kinda enhanced my enjoyment of music

i started learning how to play the guitar and this is exactly how i feel whenever i listen to music. sometimes i'll even isolate a specific instrument in a song and try to imitate it using whatever's available around me (a pen for the beats, my voice for pianos, my own guitar for the guitar). it's really fascinating.

I felt my memory was starting to wain, so at the age of 60 I started practicing the piano a little every day. I am now 65. I took lessons from age 6-16, and played in a small church as an adult but hadn’t played at all for about 15 - 20 yrs prior to starting this endeavor. At first I could hardly play my two hands together and played so slowly to get the notes it was very discouraging and disappointing. Obviously feeling that aging had made some changes in me I hadn’t realized. I’ve now continued to challenge myself playing some every single day for my brain, and thankfully having music I had inherited from a musical Aunt, I am now able to play with enjoyment and have material that challenges me as much as I want. I now care more about the detail of playing correct notes and purposing to play as well as I possibly can. I know this is improving me in many ways overall. . I am so thankful I still had my piano. I do believe that just by doing this has improved my brain immensely. This is why I am researching information on this topic and found your video. Thank you for your information.

No matter how hard you try, your always a musician! It just takes giving in to your lack of confidence, your shy ness, your fears, and your pride! When you get this right, you are now a "MUSICIAN!" All you have to do is play! Having said that, it helps if you have practiced for hours a day( I mean at least 8) and have done so every day for at least 3 years! Some are gifted and can walk through this training like its air, others have to work like dogs to get to the basic level.(that's me) Being a musician, isn't about being the best at your craft, it's all about Being! Being! Being! Being! Being! If you don't get those 5 words, then your not going far! You! Let your heart dictate where you go, Don't listen to people that judge, they have no talent other than to judge!

When I was a young lad, I tried the keyboard, but that failed miserably. Later it was the guitar, but found a familiar and undesirable cramping of my joints (later discovered it was early-onset arthritis). I've resently taken to the harmonica, but whenever I practiced dirty old town, my youngest dog starts howling along from where ever in the house she is. It's like some horrible irish 101 dalmations christmas special.

It would be interesting to find out if my brain differs from that of a musician who learned academically, or from one who was entirely self-taught. I'm fairly strange in that I started taking music seriously because of a video game (Rock Band) and that had a drastic effect on how I conceptualize a piece of music.

Guess Who Am I I’ve played piano at multiple gigs for the past five years, and I’ve encountered this problem before while traveling. Kinda hard to transport 500 pounds of wood in your car! The best solution to not actually having a piano to practice on is definitely find someone who does. Hotels usually have pianos, or maybe you live near a friend who owns one at their house. Maybe a relative owns one that they can ship to you? Or you can buy one yourself, even if it’s just a keyboard. Anything helps! If none of these help, then there’s another very important way to practice: Sight singing. Go online and find sheet music for you to read, and simply hum what you read. It’s great practice for your ear. Good luck!

She'd be at the front of the small classroom, and sitting at her piano, no projector or anything showing us where the keys are, just a chalkboard with 🎼 on it, then she'd say "Okay class, put ur first finger on the G key" and we'd all have to guess which one it is. Then in 3rd grade, u started to play the violin. So, I've benn playing for about 5 years

I first got a piano 5 years from now (currently 2018) and I never really knew what to play, so I improvised a few songs I liked. Then I began to like certain bands that I really love until today, but their songs are pretty difficult to play, so I try to learn a few basics from KZread tutorials and add in a few steps to make it easier for me. Since I do that I feel like my hearing, creativity and recognizing of very tiny details have improved massively.

I was lucky enough to have had an older mentor call my mother an say "you need to buy him a guitar right now". I was only 10 at the time and 16 years on I've learned to play quite a few instruments, as well as learning to sing fairly well. People are always so amazed and say things like "I wish I could or you were always naturally talented", which drives me absolutely nuts. The truth is I sucked as much as anybody at playing and I hadn't developed the strength in my vocal muscles to sound remotely appealing. *Anybody can learn, with the right amount of practice and dedication* . It took a considerable amount to learn personally, far more than I've witnessed with other people. The best time to start is in your youth and I encourage parents to introduce their children to music, in any capacity. When they grow up, they might be so thankful that mere words wont be able to describing their joy. That's how it is for me and i would hate to imagine a life without the profound effect music has had on me. *In ten years you wont regret having picked up that guitar, whether your are a child or an adult*

I love playing songs on the viola. I started it like 6 weeks ago, but i went to "music school" for at least 8 years. I started playing with the violin. It was a long time ago! I practiced violin every day for almost 30 minutes. Today i dont even need to practice, and i can learn some new songs fast. When i was like 8 or 9 yrs old, i joined a local orchestra, and it was worth it. I still go to a different 1, and actually enjoy it! We go outside of Hungary almost every year for contests and because we get invited to some places to play. Boy, its a lot of work, but it pays off! 2 years prior i started playing drums, and in those 2 years i learned how to play the marimba (on not a very high level tho) ! And looking forward, i would like to play the guitar and play the piano (i can play the piano on a starter level, but i want to become good at it; i havent tried the guitar yet) The conclusion is: i like to play music on the viola, violin, marimba and some rythms on the drum. Basically thats it. Ps.: sorry for my bad english, im hungarian and the language i learn is german xD The orchestra that i go in is "Gárdony Zoltán Ifjúsági Kamarazenekar" if you are interested in what it is like to an outsider I hope you enjoyed, reader, and stay schwifty (comment gotta get scwifty if you watch or have watched Rick and Morty :D)

As a genius musician i can also tell you an important change to the brain from music is the sense of timing, the ability to drive more cycles of thought into less time. you can basically adjust your clock speed ;) it helps you recognize patterns in timing too, which helps in ... everything especially understanding physics, sound, user habits, economics.. etc.. i also think that fast paced shooters and RTS gaming has an effect here also i was kind of surprised you didn't touch on anything to do with timing, music in the 7 liberal arts was basically included as a study of math in time, rhythm

Charles Sea I invite you to my city then. Here, the "real instruments" people talk about are usually piano, violin and anything with the reputation of being complicated. Anything else it's "not a real instrument". I recently visited someone in a foreign country for me (Spain) and I was surprised to see the way they see music at all... They see it the way it is, an art, a beautiful form of art. Here music is considered by the vast majority just fooling around if it's not classical (then it's boring) or folk. A bunch of closed minds...

I have played the trumpet since 5th grade, (I'm fairly decent tone wise and not so great with rhythms) and I stuck with it throughout school. Its fun and challenging and also you meet a ton of new people in band and their generally nice. Sticking with any instrument for years is hard enough and playing it really good is even harder. Just saying, to all those instrumentalists out there reading this who love playing...keep practicing, cause what your doing takes a lot of time and dedication to become good at and that is something you should appreciate.

Thats what I get from the internet

Things that I'd really like to see be clarified are if singing and people who are entirely self-taught (a specific way) also apply. Because everything I've seen says playing an instrument improves fine motor skills, but clearly singing doesn't require that. And as far as math and the connection between audio and visual, I feel like those are specifically for people who read music. I know a lot of people who play instruments that never had any kind of remotely formal teaching that have absolutely no idea how to go about reading a piece of sheet music or many basic things we learn in band classes. I can't think of many things because I do play in a band, but I know people who are fully self-taught often don't understand much beyond basic theory, such as time signature, dynamics, tempo changes, etc. (Also, if you read through this entire thing thinking OMG WHY IS THAT ME, then laughed, then cried, feel free to ask questions and I might be able to help xD)

Does this apply as well, when you learn to make music via a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation)? I've been learning to do this (for 9 months, at least 5 hours a week) yet I do not know how to play any instruments. But learning to write music has wanted me to learn to play the piano. (I just haven't gotten around that yet)

Wow you all are awesome. I used to play the violin back in elementary. But never got back into it. As an adult, I got myself a guitar and I know about apps and all that can help you learn. Honestly, even a song or two would be nice to play

I learned to play an instrument that was always passed down throughout my family, the trumpet! And when I took band lessons, I got a new class called Spanish and most likely because of music I was able to do Spanish easily!

Well. I play the drums. I've been following lessons for six years now and I still enjoy it. Nowadays, I'm teaching myself how to play the piano and I try to compose my own songs by creating melodies which come from my head, obviously.
