Could hologram technology be the future of video calls? - BBC News
The Proto M is a hologram device that lets people beam themselves thousands of miles away.
Proto was founded by David Nussbaum in Los Angeles in 2019 and is already shipping its human-sized machines worldwide.
The latest version is expected to cost around £2000 when it hits the market next month.

I am confused, Don't we have this already on our phones? Why do we want another box in the house?

Thats not a hologram that's just someone's image in a box. It was invented decades ago. They called it the television.
I'd be tempted to start every call with "what is thy bidding my master"

As someone who chooses to zoom calls with the video off, not sure if this is actually needed or useful. looks fun though
This just seems like making a zoom call on an oversized phone
If I put this in the category for VR and Augmented Reality, I’d call all of this stuff the awkward phase. I think we all know we need more intuitiveness and tech that is superior to in person meetings. But we haven’t hit the gold spot yet. I think we’ll see something for the masses in a decade.

@@shermanwooman8608 My goodness, could you imagine? I have been in terror worrying that my Teams mic was on. When you are in Teams from 0545am nonstop until 1345 and you are pair programming nonstop it can feel somewhat intrusive. That is why I am choosing to back into the office. I want my boss out of my house.
I feel this is doubtful. Even when this is optimized, I doubt people would want to deal with all the hassle of the setup just for a normal call. Maybe your grandparents or something special. It’s been my experience in speaking with people I work with, people don’t really like video calls, at least for work.
It’s gonna be quite useful when we do presentations to people in long distance. Also it can be used for online business. It’s easy to see actual size or shape of commodities.
Why not just have a screen? It looks like a video call. 😅
I'm happy enough making video calls on my phone
A hologram to me only would be better than a screen is if the display is bigger than the device its in. i.e. a wristwatch that can display a life-size bust of a human. Not a 3D CRT TV. But that's still sci-fi.

Holograms are more ominous than normal phone calls or video chats
Interacting with a 3D image of the person you're talking to in real-time is genuinely revolutionary. Not only will this enhance the video calling experience, but it also has potential in various fields like manufacturing, architecture, and entertainment. Can't wait to see how this technology develops and becomes more widely adopted in the future.
Really useful for giving big tech companies all your conversations
According to the number of people who willingly use a camera in a Teams meeting, no. No it will not. Can you even imagine working for this company and the boss is constantly telling people to use their cam. That would be freaking hilarious.
it will come, 60yrs ago, facetime wasn't even imagined, the best we could imagine was talking into your wrist watch.
This video is secretly a finger to metaverse.
So it's a light box with a display overtop
we get closer to star wars technology every day.
the application for doctors and nurses sounds worthwhile. for normal folks, not so much. we live in the time of _facetime_ but people don't call each other anymore, they simply send messages.

Amazing.
I don't want to be a bummer but it just looks like a big fat screen to me. Aren't video calls using phones or computers more efficient? I expected a small device projecting a 3D image bigger than the screen.
Ok technology has gotten out of control now. I actually like the original way of communicating face to face like an actual human. And this is coming from a young person. Reality isn't supposed to be fantasy. I guess I'll be the "weirdo" not using these things in the future.

🤩 Yeah it will mostly use in shopping malls
Honestly I'd make a meme out of this.
The latest iteration... yea, this has been tried a few times before. There are two major issues. One, if you want to make a call you have to enter a "telephone room", as in comparison to what used to be a booth. and the Second is the receiver, a box just as deep as the image it's presenting. Even reduced to handheld scale that would be a large box in your pocket. And I'd like to point out that this already exists in VR, the only issue once it's active is that the person you're talking to is wearing VR goggles for some reason... It's a nice try, but I really don't see how he's going to introduce this to everyone's homes.

It's more paralax illusion rather than holographic. And they're trying so hard to justify it doesn't serves the same function as a small TV

I’m not on favour of promoting a conspiracy theory but I would like to propose that airlines and/or oil companies have quashed holographic communications for years. Imagine a board room of executives in a boardroom sitting face to face with their peers 1000s of kms away. No flights no fuel.

The fact is even with video call, many of us already reluctant to turn it on what more if hologram. Novelty at best. IMHO.
Very interesting, although the wearable version would be very awkward.
I loved this... all the way until they stated it will be used to advertise products to you using "smart recognition". WHY must we be subjected to constant targeted attacks by advertisers. If the unit is bought and paid for, and if the service is over the internet, why are we still being bombarded with ads we did not ask for and do not want? That's a rhetorical question because the answer is pure greed.
Good report, but BBC should be above using the misleading click-bait thumbnail though.
How does seeing your feet help communication?
isn't this just a bigger smart phone with a large screen? i miss the part where it was actually spewing hologram...correct me if i am wrong.

Now that A.i. is here to stay, i have to assume that A.i. will be able to interface with electronics and be able to generate a custom holo image as it's own avatar to interface with the enduser. *Shudders*
Given that on most of my work-related video calls about three-quarters of the participants turn off their video camera, I see no reason to think that holograms would actually be used. All that matters is what is being said.
I have literally come up with an idea of how to make it happen. i kinda think that we need an arm watch that will copy the human look, DNA, and genes and then display in 3D and you slap it, he will get the signal that you slept him by the same watch wearing it's like when you dream you got hurt then it's almost true but when you wake up you find yourself unharmed
Oh 😮 nice 👍
Why though? Why can't you just use airplay on a smart TV with face time with a bunch of people
But will it make me look thinner?
No, it uses way too much data and it is not necessary.
