It's odd that the story says Microsoft's comeback is due to cloud computing, but Microsoft's actual cloud platform Azure wasn't mentioned.

Effectively pushing enterprises to Office 365 didn't hurt either. Lowering the cost per unit, but ensuring a perpetual revenue stream certainly helped the bottom line. Prior to Office 365, enterprises would only upgrade if they had to when software versions were no longer supported. Now, businesses have no choice but to pay every year for the service.

What a lot of people failed to understand is that MS is so huge and so wealthy that they could make mistakes that would kill other companies and consider it a learning experience. Nokia comes to mind. Was it a stupid acquisition? Absolutely, but nobody seriously considered that it would affect the viability of the company. Microsoft has always been the quiet innovator moving into segment after segment and when the Windows division hit the wall because of the PC crash there was Azure and the cloud to pick up the slack. I've been using Microsoft products since DOS 2.0 and Microsoft has provided me with the tools to live a comfortable life. I worry about Apple. They have become a one product company racing towards the smartphone crash.

Apple is also a huge and VERY wealthy company. They could be making mistakes for a decade and still remain operational. They're starting to get into cloud and AI now though (albeit late). I wouldn't be worried for too long with their resources and unprecedented brand loyalty.

Actualllllly, this perfectly describes Apple as well. They're moving towards services for revenue, and they make a ton of money from it. For example, they already owne over 80% of the revenue of the mobile gaming industry, despite the fact that they have never made a single game. They acquired Beats for $3 billion, just as a good way to advertise package deals. Apple Music is hugely popular amongst teens in NA, and I imagine Apple TV is getting more and more traction. They're slow to the running but they're learning to move away from just the iPhone.

@@e.matthews Apple's revenue is still too strongly tied to the iPhone. iPhone sales started flatlining in 2015, hence the price hike with every generation since. In order for them to keep the revenue up, they need to keep increasing the prices as smartphone sales keep going down. The high price of their new iPhones is forcing a lot of customers to hold on to older models longer than before so they can't keep that game up forever. Their services are still a very small percentage of their business and it's even smaller now than it was at the end of last year. They will announce new services this year that might turn things around but Apple is known for their walled garden approach to business and services work best in more open environments. Apple isn't going anywhere but it might take a few years for them to pivot. Then again, they might wow us with some "one more thing" announcement this year.

Supreme Leader Yes Windows is declining, because Windows devices sales are have been declining steadily since 2012... By around 30% in total... This is a fact. Futuristic software means very little... MS is trying to put into Windows features typical of mobile OSs such as IOS, which is good for consumers but is pissing off many businesses... As a consumer I am happy with this evolution, but Windows has still a serious problem with forced updates and updates that break drivers... Their policies and quality controls need to improve...

It wasn't open source in general that Steve Balmer called cancer; it was actually Linux, but not because it was open source, but rather more specifically because if its (copyleft) GPL license. That license does indeed basically propagate to whatever it's used by, forcing it to also be GPL (and thus open source as well). So it's not inaccurate to call it a cancer, although of course that's an intentional negative connotation from Steve Balmer's part. Things, still, have changed. Although Microsoft wouldn't create new GPL software from scratch, they have contributed quite a bit to GPL code (such as Linux itself); and of course Microsoft is big on their own (non-GPL) open source projects such as TypeScript and VSCode.

Microsoft should create cheapest motion capture Alternative compared to what Hollywood, Game companies use which is very expensive. Motion capture must be affordable so that more and more indie developers can make AAA quality video games.. Currently Indie Game developers are stuck with pixelated (vintage) and 2D games.

Since 2016 we're the fasted growing major economy TBH no other county was destroyed as badly as India by Brits colonization. #FACTS

They are the new Sun Microsystems and will share the same fate (acquired, dismembered, and forgotten). They are/have been screwing home users and the home market for too many years; when the enterprise moves on, the home market will not save them. You cannot continually abandon products and platforms and have it not bite you in the a$$ either. Balmer was right about so many things, they (shareholders) just have never had fortitude to ride some things out.

I think it's interesting that we are letting the dollars talk so much. One would watch this video and think that Microsoft is a new company that is winning in every category; when in reality it had one or two innovations that really started to make money. This doesn't acknowledge Xbox, or Xbox Live, Skype, Azure, Office 365, or even their new customer bases of governments, healthcare, and education.
