Glad to be aboard. I grew up in the central North Carolina woods. Love box turtles seventy five plus years and counting. Found a snapper once on Christmas Day. Snakes, lizards, all creatures great and small.

A Snapper on Christmas??? I live in Virginia and we have tons of Snapping turtles here but by Late October they are buried in the mud and we don't see them again until about April. Also love the box turtles and stop on the highways to protect all species of turtles.

The Christmas Day snapper was in the bottom of a clear two foot deep pool in kind of a non flowing spring area. It was cold and not much movement but a little.

You should do a UV light trap for insects one night, just hang up a white sheet and set up a tube style black light to shine on it when you’re night Herping

Nice turtles, barking tree frogs and cottonmouths. Droughts are quite good for aquatic and semi aquatic animals, as they don’t have any other choice than congregating shallow and easy to reach water.

A question about the loggerhead musk turtles. You use the term “megacephalic,” obviously referring to their large heads. Is large-headed-ness only present in some of these loggerhead musks? Is it a sexual dimorphic characteristic? Are there some loggerhead musk turtles that are not megacephalic? I don’t think that term is part of the (common) name of the turtle, so you must be using at as either a standard descriptor or else a term to identify a variation from the common morphology of the species. Just curious.

  • @NKFherping

Typically, yes, it is females that develop the particularly large head. All Loggerheads are big-headed to an extent, but the megacephalic head is developed in populations that feed predominantly on mussels and clams.
