Cost of Living in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic - UPDATED 2020!

Happy Saturday! I decided to make an updated cost of living video, specifically for Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic. This is where I lived for a year, and Chris lived for his whole life. It is the 2nd biggest city in the DR, and a great alternative if you are looking for a city outside of Santo Domingo. This is from my view as an american expat living in the dominican republic, but i review costs of education, housing, transportation, food, entertainment, and more for all lifestyles. If you are planning to, or already live in the Dominican Republic, I hope this is helpful for you with budgeting. Let me know in the comments any questions you have!
Here is the original cost of living video: • Cost of Living in Domi...

If this is the first video of mine you're watching: Hi! My name is Mills and I moved from New York to the Dominican Republic alone in July 2017! I lived in Jarabacoa for a year to teach abroad, and then spent another year in Santiago de los Caballeros. I started this channel to document my experiences living abroad and as an American, female expat overseas, and would love for you to subscribe to follow my journey! My now husband, Christopher and I have just moved to Arizona after completing our K-1 visa journey, and are looking forward to this new adventure, and sharing it with you along the way!

batman this can be accomplished in a place like DR especially santiago in particular. It is very convenient. since it is affordable and distances are perfect meaning not too far. transportation is cheap and u dont even need a car since u could call delivery for food or taxi uber. City is super clean especially now santiago looks like a diamond now. weather is great. sunny blue skies. u dont really need A/C but u need a fan. u can buy a house without those nasty taxes or HOA fees. you can rent a house in nice area $200 forget about taxes or HOA. make your money really count. dont waste on taxes or HOA. use money wisely you can live with pennies if u choose the right place. this is almost impossible in USA where everything is a "STANDARD" everybody pays the same and there is no escape to the system. always travel so your mind can see that there is a world outside USA.

Mills We still live in the USA. When I retire in 3 or 4 years, we can move there. We have family looking after the property. When we started the process in 2014, it was in planning. We kept paying until the total price was paid but they hadn’t broke ground on our condo yet. Since we paid the entire price of the original condo so they gave us a unit that was already finished. Ground still haven’t been broken on our original unit yet. So one must be wary of the process. That’s 6 years.

are u planning to stay in USA? or come back? is him adapting to US? do he miss his Santiago? Is it possible that you come to live here at some point?. I see people renting houses in nice places near villa olga 3 bedrooms 2 bathrooms for $200 i see prices in US now 1,400 for a small apartment then electric and other services its too expensive. I would say it is hard for a Santiaguero to move away and stay there, they almost always want to move back especially if the guy was a family cared man.

I get from Cabarete, a small surfer village in the province of Puerto Plata, to Cap Haitien in Haiti at 10 USD, to Santo Domingo at 10 USD, to Port-au-Prince in Haiti at 20 USD. Travelling inside Haiti with taptaps is even cheaper, about half the price of guaguas in the DR.

Tip at the salon, 10-15%, restaurants we tip 20% too even with the taxes because they don’t split that up properly. Sometimes if you’re out someone will “watch” your car even if you didn’t ask lol so you can give them like 25 pesos for that.

Carmen Reina del Sol it’s pretty rare for single people to live alone in the DR. Families stay together much longer and contribute to the bills together. If they’re not married they live at home. Too expensive. Not worth it. If Costa Rica, had a military defense system. That would be great. I can't go for this.

So I always say you can make it work with anything lol. But others would say no. There are comfortable apartments for $200ish a month, but not in the nicest areas. Then you’ll have to factor in food and transportation. Personally even when I was paying $400 for my apartment I didn’t exceed $1200 total

I know a lot of americans(retired) that have moved out there to DR in general, and they have told me that they do more out there w their money. If you live in the country side, way more. You just have to know how to manage your money. Fruits, veggie and few stuff cant buy it in a supermarket, go to local famer. 3-4 whole pineapples for DP$100 pesos, = $1.75

Yensi Martinez for sure! More eating locally, cheaper transportation and less extras. But it’s definitely possible.

set aside $200 for a nice house near republica argentina avenue which it is a good area with easy access. i prefer house than apartment. it is more private. electricity 20-30 dollars. water and wifi and cable less than 60 dollars. weather is great here nice breeze, low humidity and lots of sun blue skies no gray depressive skies and food at la sirena, supermercado nacional or bravo real good quality bread, homemade cheeses, tropical fresh fruits for pennies. Man you can live like a king in Santiago with $500. the biggest expenses would be car which u don't really need one unless u want to visit samana, sosua, cabarete, puerto plata, jarabacoa, constanza, etc. Your dollar go further here.
