Cosmic Queries: Absolutely Puzzled with Heather Berlin and Soleil Saint-Cyr

Ғылым және технология

Got a problem? On this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice explore the world of puzzles and problem-solving with neuroscientist and clinical psychologist Heather Berlin featuring Soleil Saint-Cyr, the youngest woman to publish a crossword puzzle in the New York Times.
First, we dive into crossword puzzles with Soleil. What makes people want to construct them? How do you make one? Find out what it takes to get a crossword puzzle into the New York Times. We explore the connection between crossword puzzles, vocabulary, and pattern recognition. Why do people even like crosswords?
Next, we get to our patron questions with Dr. Berlin. What goes on in the minds of people who do puzzles? Why does anyone want to solve them? Discover our problem-solving roots and why our brains crave it. How far do games and puzzles go back? How does this activate our reward centers? We look into primary and secondary reinforcers and how different games and puzzles work within our minds. Are our brains hardwired for certain games? Why do puzzles seem to have a calming effect?
We continue with our patron questions, learning how doing puzzles and gaming connects to addiction. Why can’t we stop playing games on our phones? Is this linked to gambling and other addictions? We break down how easy or hard puzzles are and what they do to our brain. Do brain games help us keep our mind sharp as we age? Which ones? How come some puzzles seem to get easier over time? How does the unconscious mind help us solve problems? All that, and we break down the different parts of the brain involved in different types of problem-solving! Plus, hear a special announcement from Chuck!
Thanks to our Patrons Ken Abe, Oscar h, Travis Mansfield, Skyler Pierce, C Hough, Sunny Day, Ashlynn Iglesias, Shain Dholakiya, Joy Jane, and Elena Grab for supporting us this week.
NOTE: StarTalk+ Patrons can watch or listen to this entire episode commercial-free.

That realization also made me aware of how impactful we are to our planet and solar system despite our small relative size; those realizations are what are driving me to study electrical engineering and pursue a future where my future children and younger siblings/family members have a healthier world to enjoy

    Neil, Heather and Chuck: You need to learn more about modern board games. There are all kinds of them. Competitive, cooperative, lots of luck, no luck, abstract, thematic story-telling etc. In fact, you could easily do a whole follow-up episode just discussing the psycology and math of board game design.

    @@jfreshh330 I somewhat agree. Pictionary has the element of luck in which category you get based on where your expertise might lie compared to your opponents, especially in an All-Play round. But, yes, it is more skill based, requiring both abstract and logical thought processes. Worker placement/resource management games can get highly strategic, too, even if there is luck in the way of someone going where you wanted to or not, but this then forces you to adapt, which I think is one of the most fun and challenging parts of those games.

How do these various dimensions of speed interact to impact our perception of time. I seriously have been wanting to know this for decades. Thanks!

    You just disproved time dilation. Thank you.

  • @NineAtoms1

    @NineAtoms1

    3 жыл бұрын

    You actually needn't look very far. One can "see" time dilation in the GPS satellites that orbit the earth: "Einstein's general relativity theory says that gravity curves space and time, resulting in a tendency for the orbiting clocks to tick slightly faster, by about 45 microseconds per day. The net result is that time on a GPS satellite clock advances faster than a clock on the ground by about 38 microseconds per day." physicscentral.com/explore/writers/will.cfm

  • @lextacy2008

    @lextacy2008

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@NineAtoms1 This was debunked. GPS satellites would then be behind or ahead just like your clock at home being a bit too slow as to why you are 2 minutes late from your job. Time is universal. Its gravity that is slowing or speeding up the physical gears on a clock. "SR proponents would have us believe that the fountain of youth awaits us inside a high speed rocket ship, or on a lifetime of non-stop jet travel, if only we can make them fast enough. Nice if it were true. Based on the reasoning that any time-shift which might occur as the result of moving bodies should occur equally in each, because each body moves in equal relation to the other, I conclude that such time-dilation between moving bodies must be impossible. An interesting aspect of this argument is that it appears to have been overlooked by mainstream science texts."

    F.YI. the youngest crossword constructor in history was Daniel Larsen - age 13 years 4 months. It was his 9th entry before being accepted. He has now 10 accepted entries. No transformers no juice boxes and no wooman parts. He put quite a lot of effort into it I can imagine - as much as other young constructors, which you can find at xwordinfo.

    To help Dr Tyson with fighting his underscoritis: in the old computer times, the underscore character was inserted in the line beneath of what we wanted to underscore. There were no underlined characters back then. Hope it helps!

    Gotta disagree. The underscore predates computers-it comes from typewriters. Twitter allows it to be used in handles as a substitute for the space character. Spaces aren't allowed in Twitter handles. Exactly the same as in programming languages. Nothing to do with underlining text. I agree with Dr. Tyson: It shouldn't be used in Twitter handles. It's not an alphabet, number, or punctuation. And it's easy to miss when the text is underlined, hyperlinked, or occurs near a boundary.

    On the number vs puzzle piece thing. I can find that puzzle pieces in a split second, but I can't remember a phone number for just enough time to type it into my phone. I have to ask twice. I am far more of a visual person. I can picture 3 dimensional shapes and find errors in complex patterns and tell you if something is going to work or not. Like my mom bought a TV the other day and it was leaned back like a recliner seat and I immediately said. Those feet are on backwards. And fixed it haha. I work in a print shop and I am always the one finding little small messups and they are like, cone on man, nobody is going to notice that. And im like, well I did !lol
