CORROSION. How to protect your 4x4. Overland Workshop with Roothy
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Roothy, AKA John Rooth explains procedures to protect a 4x4 against corrosion. The key ingredient is lanolin.
Received from Scott Elms, owner of Rainbow Beach Under-body Car Wash: We do not use recycled water to wash vehicles. Roothy is welcome to see inside our operation at any time. (Roothy does not specify which car wash he is referring to in his statement.)

100% FRESH WATER CARWASH. Rainbow Beach Under-body Car Wash DOES NOT use recycled water to wash vehicles. At the end of your video, Roothy suggests NOT to use Underbody Car Washes such as the one at Rainbow Beach. While this is true of some less reputable car washes, this is absolutely not true of our carwash. In fact, because of the circulation of this type of falsehood, we offer a Fresh Water Guarantee (10 times your money back). I have contacted Roothy and offered for him to come and see inside our operation at any time without notice to set the record straight. Thanks for the chance to clarify this Andrew. @Thomas Sleigh with the exception of Andrew. He’s South African. Don’t get me wrong. He’s a pro. He’s probably forgotten more than I could ever learn about 4x4ing and over-landing. I just find his commentary a little repetitive sometimes for example the dual battery one. He’s got a very different style to others. Ronny Dahl on the other hand. He somehow brings you into the story. You feel he’s talking directly to you. And you feel you’re on the trip with him. Andrew... he’s got a reporter style. ✌🏻👍🏻
Lanolin is the best. When i worked in Darwin for the army at Robertson Barracks as a mechanical fitter, all the components that i rebuilt i had to coat with....you guessed it....Lanolin. Every single Australian army vehicle is coated with Lanolin underneath. Makes them last a lot longer in the bush. Great video Andrew! And good to see Roothy on your channel! Cheers boys!
That was quite a joy to watch, I think I could sit my butt by a campfire with a couple of beers and listen to you two chat all night. Jason

Thank you for putting together this video! It is the most informational one I have seen in a while!
This guy is great! A wealth of knowledge and I could listen to him all night. Never knew about using lanolin for this. Great video!
My two favourite you tubers! I’m so happy to see this!
Great to see Roothy sharing his expertise / experience with you Andrew. Lanolin is awesome and chainsaw bar oil can also be brushed on, under the vehicle. Quite tacky which is good. Recently saw this posted by a guy on the East coast of the USA where salt is used on snow covered roads. Just gotta make sure that surface is dry before applying lanolin or any other coating, otherwise you'll seal - in the moisture.
Love the video. I would love to see more of these collaboration videos with Roothy. The corrosion on alloy wheels, (nicknamed "white worm" in Aus), is a huge problem.
This is by far the most important and best video you have ever done. Being in the Alps now, salted roads in winter are a nightmare - and you just solved a big quest I had been on for years. Waxoil didn't really cut it but this sheepish stuff seems to cut it. Thanks!
Thanks for this very good video. I strongly agree re lanolin which I apply with a pump up weed sprayer, and also Saltex (or equivalent) , with the same type of pressure pump, ALL OVER including radiator, a/c condenser, etc. before and after beach work, and inox through engine bay and mechanicals before and after. This combination has served me well for many years
Nice to see you 2 together!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, I am just building my first rig for full time overlanding in Canada & USA, I have contacted Lanotec to ask them where i can purchase their products, thanks and now I have a new you tube channel to watch with Roothy. Thanks again.
Lanolin has been catching on here in the USA quite a bit the last few years. Many years for those in the “know”. I have Fluid Filmed my Toyota FJ every spring and fall (bought new in 2011) and 8 years later (8 New England winters, always outside) looked almost new. Started the routine now with my 2018 4Runner. I love that hand pump applicator, I’m going to have to try one of those as opposed to the cans or air hose compressor sprayer. Great video 👍🏻
Great video, would be great to have a 2 part video one on each channel both you guys sitting back talking the talk about all things in general bouncing off each other around a fire. What a wealth of knowledge and experiences to share. Andrew can enjoy his coke and roothy can enjoy the beers.
Brilliant! Just brilliant. I've been searching for something to help maintain my 04' Tacoma that still have a nice frame. THANK YOU!

Loving the collabs! I will be using the lanotec UP for sure. Getting my Fj cruiser chassis and underbody recoated and then in with the lanotec! Electronic rust protection doesn’t work in 4x4’s! My father worked for ford and talking to the engineers about it they said if we thought that would work why wouldn’t we put it in cars factory!!
What a legend, Roothy has a new fan
Great information💯I’m a true believer in preventative maintenance, Thanks Mate 👍
Another entertaining informative video, I’d like to see the three of you ( must include Ronnie) do a trip and compare all your over landing equipment, compare personal preferences etc, you seem to spark off each other really well, I’ve enjoyed this one, ( as ever) thank you. Bill Westley
Please more of this style. I can't say I learned anything new in this video but it has shown me I wasn't an idiot for listening to my old boss and doing this.
A fellow I used to know worked in an underground mine as a truck driver. He used to spray the outside of his truck with diesel & wipe it down with a rag after. His was the only one of 6 trucks which had no rust on the outside of the body so, his trucks were not replaced as frequently as those of the other drivers. He told me the truck always looked dusty but never rusted.
So good to see you two in this old 3yr old vid - Lanolin though is still current rust free maintainable Andrew if you read this May 22 maybe time to catch up with Roothy again!!
Been an advocate of using Lanotec for some years thanks to an early video from Roofy

@@JFWGarage Hey after a year, how did you do with the lanolin?
Love Roothy and the 40 series!
I've been using Lanotec for a few months now and it's fantastic stuff. It's been especially good for interior detailing. My 30yo Landcruiser's interior was badly faded and the cleaning products I was using weren't working, but a wipe over with lanolin brought out the original colours and it's stayed that way. The only downside to lanolin is the residue attracts dirt, so you have to be mindful of that.

Very Interesting😎thanks for sharing it
As a driveline corrosion preventative on mine sites vehicles, the utilization of chemically fortified lanoline, blended within penetrating oils with dense suspension properties, has been standard implementation for over 20 years, and constantly monitored to conforming standards. Very few corrosion issues when reapplied every 12 months. Applied using pressure system to ensure deep penetration within internal crevices, and Australian produced product. 👍👍🇦🇺

Qc cyclist They offer their product in different viscosities as well. It’s perfectly explained on their website.
Simple fact is that the manufacturers should galvanise the chassis to start with, Land Rover did it with the Perentie chassis and bulkhead and while it's a sacrificial coating that will eventually break down it does take a long time. Nothing to stop axle casings, swivels, hubs and all the small brackets receiving the same treatment, what would it add to the cost of a new vehicle to have a 25yr chassis warranty?
Great Tip for Sealing the Underbelly of your 4x4 - Thanks Guys
Also using it on the interior plastics of my dmax and better than anything else I have used. Magic stuff
Two legends
I’ve been holding off putting chemical gunk on my Landie hoping one day I’d get advice like this. THANK YOU!!
Well you learn something every day. I guess I should have known that there is a potential problem where alloy wheels meet the hub because I am well aware of the problem with different metals when boating. Guess I just never thought about it before...
Such good information. Common sense if you really think about it but what if you never think about it. Videos like these are so valuable in today's world. Wonderful hard learned knowledge digested and presented in a concise manner. Thank you so much for "writing it down".

It'd be cool to see you show the Aussies around Africa at some point, it's a completely different *kind* of overlanding that they're used to and I'm sure they'd enjoy it. Maybe you guys could make your own convoy or something? It'd be a fun series I suspect. :) Or.. All of you warm weather folks could do an epic trip way up north in the cold and see how that changes your perspectives. :P
$2 can of canola cooking oil from your favourite supermarket works well too for rustproofing the underside. You smell like a chip shop for a couple of days but it works as well as anything else I've tried (lanolin, fish oil). Didn't plan on it, but realised just before a Moreton trip I'd forgotten to do anything so used what was available 👍

There's a new product called xcp xpro rust inhibitor. I sprayed the underside of my rx with it and it kept it rust free through the last winter where here in the uk our loads are plastered in salt. Its a highly corrosive environment that eats older cars. This stuff works. There's also acf50 which I liberally spray over my bmw adventure bike. Its still pristine 4 years later as I treat it every two months. This will inhibit rust and even treat lightky rusted areas to restore them. Worth every penny. I have lannolin but xcp pro is better...it stays effective for months. Lannolin is good for your skin too! As shooter I use it to lube my brass cartridge cases before resizing them. Its great stuff but the xcp is the dogs danglies bits for doing the underside of your truck.
Andrew when are you getting Roothy to South Africa, I'm sure he would enjoy a Trans Botswana, Namibia and Namaqualand trip. The nice thing about adventure trips in Southern Africa is the fact you don't have to drive as far to see so much, compared to here in Australia. Get Roothy to Africa :-)
thanks for tips
I ended up tackling rust too late in my vehicles life so I had to go a different route and use POR-15 with some major repairs to fix rot, the method shown here is much simpler and I wish I had known about it years ago. There is one problem though, I live in a very rural area and the unibody frame rails on my Jeep XJ were filled with mouse nesting material and debris which stayed wet and caused the rust to accelerate rapidly and cause rot. This method would not solve that problem, as the small rodents and debris would still have easy access to the holes in the frame rails and body. I ended up shooting every hollow crevice in the body and under body frame rails with expandable foam to fully seal those areas off from moisture and debris. For the climate I live in and the conditions I face it was the best option I feel. In warmer areas like the Southwest US and Australia the method in the video looks like it works well.

we used POR-15 to stop rust and corrosion when I lived at the beach in florida. lots of mudbuggy, drift and off road guys use it on their frames. no idea if they have an australian distributor though.
How do you feel about using Marine Grease for water sensitive parts?
Any alternative oils you can use for undercoating your rig for east EU? Here there is only pharmacy grade lanoline and it's really expensive..
Years of UK struggle with Finigan's gloopy Waxoyl, useless self-clogging aerosol cans, self- destructing pump applicators and futile efforts to make it flow despite diluting with white spirits and heating the cans in hot water. It certainly didn't help on BL products in the 80's. Revelation however in finding another product used for preserving jet engine components "OCS 100" or similar that remained liquid and seemed to creep into gaps like the rather heavily eulogised Lanotec here (which I'd never heard of until today, but looks interesting) , but I`ve lost the details, as it worked so well in 1999 on the underside of a rust-free 1978 Range Rover I still have and a G Wagen kept for 12 years with no hint of rust.
Hey guys is it ok to spray gear box and transfer case or will it be smoking ?
So what do I do over in Finland where lanolin is only sold in 20ml tubes for applying to nipples when breastfeeding? I've used linseed oil before, I think it has some of the same behaviors as far as penetrating, but not so sure about actual protection.
Acf50 I use on my bikes in Scotland and never have rust even after daily drive in rain and salt ( half year council spray roads here with salt)
Where do i get one of those hose attachments tubes from ????
Can I mix the Lanoil 50/50 with the diesel to spray it easily?
I would say out of experience the best way to fight of rust with a car or 4x4 is rubberizing when they drive the car on a ramp and spray the whole undercarriage with bed liner basically... thats almost the best and easy way and not only that... still even if you have it *rubberized* after a day at the beach or any offroading in that case spary the whole underside with a hose

Corrosion is always a chemical process, and anywhere you have dissimilar metals, you have a much greater potential for corrosion. This means not only where the hubs meet the rims, but also where you have electrical connections change from copper to steel.
