Organic Chemistry on Khan Academy: Carbon can form covalent bonds with itself and other elements to create a mind-boggling array of structures. In organic chemistry, we will learn about the reactions chemists use to synthesize crazy carbon based structures, as well as the analytical methods to characterize them. We will also think about how those reactions are occurring on a molecular level with reaction mechanisms. Simply put, organic chemistry is like building with molecular Legos. Let's make some beautiful organic molecules!
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

    +Kyle mann That's exactly what I thought! In the last video I was like "Hey, something is very wrong about this structure" but that example really tells someone if they understand the naming convention or not. :)

    now, this is mainly because of the rules, but ...from a purely scientific point of view, the 2-propyl heptane ...does exist, it's just that we preffer to call it 4-methyl nonane because we have these fancy rules ^__^

    yes for the first answer and no for the second. the rules of naming start to change as you bring in more substituents because the priority changes with each substituent.

    Looks like if the added chain is bigger than the prefix number than you go with the added chain. Ex. 2, propyl? Propyl is 3 and 2 is (usually) 2, so (3 being bigger than 2) you go with 3. Not bad. Live and learn.

    I thought so too, but it actually wasn't a mistake. Take a look at how a methyl or ethyl are attached, and you'll see how the one line is supposed to be included. If it is not, then the attached carbon chain will always be short one carbon.

  • @Mrdannyboy1462
    @Mrdannyboy14629 жыл бұрын

    Isn't it supposed to be 4-propyl nonane. I don't understand why it's methyl.

  • @KaushikMishrakk

    No because in the 4th place of the longest carbon chain, a branched off substituent is found (the pink color bond) so there only one C atom is present so prefix cant be prop .. see the figure clearly !

    Bro made another mistake. take a look at 1:01 the propyl group and the heptane group are "attached" with a yellow line that isn't part of the molecule. at 1:30 that yellow line was mistaken for a part of the carbon chain and was colored in. as a result we ended up with a 4-methylnonane, while the correct correction would be 3-methyloctane.

    sry to interrupt you but you made a mistake at 1:35 because as you correctly maintaned you added a propyl chain which has 3 carbons but when you counted the longest chain you also counted your green-yellow connection line to the whole chain. so in the end you get an nonane which should just be an OCTANE....

  • @heathernoriega1412

    4 is where the methyl side chain is. There are three more carbons preceding that (3,2,1) so if that were a side chain it’d be a propyl.
