Some quick troubleshooting help from the comments below: -Your nexus file path and your INI file path must be exact. 99% of issues are due to this problem. If your moving around game installation files, installing outside the default C drive, ect you will have issues. -when I say "if you put the content file path here (in contents) you'll have more issues", I'm referencing the folders WITHIN content. I did not clearly show that, my fault. -script extender mods are the only mods confirmed NOT to work on gamepass. All other mods should function properly, although you may need to manually install some without mod manager options.

if you're having issues, its likely a prob with your nexus install path or your INI location. all my mods worked on these instructions.

@carpetreviews5916 my nexus install path is the content folder where the game launcher is and the Ini is in the my documents starfield folder . Def in the right spot. I will say vids alittle confusing bc it says click content for the path then right after u say putting in the content folder can make even more trouble

The way people are able to just rename it is if you enable file name extensions in your file explorer the file will show the .ini or .txt on the end and you can just change it to whatever you want. You can do the same to change a mp4 into an mp3. The audio wont be great, but it works nonetheless.

Yes it is possible to do, but te setting is not on by default in windows

Update - some games are automatic (ex: fallout 4) as long as you give vortex permission

Does it matter if I have Starfield installed on a secondary SSD? I had no more space on my default drive so I had to install it to my second one. For context, I followed everything in the video and most of the mods in Vortex work. However, the only ones that don't seem to work are texture mods or mods that alter character looks. I tried downloading them on Vortex and also manually copying the mod data into the Data file of Starfield's, but it's still not working

Another person here had issues installing off the C drive. I don't recommend it, but I'm sure it can be done successfully. Unfortunately I have not installed any asthetic mods so I can't troubleshoot them 🫤

Yep same issue here. I think it’s just the way it is. Vortex can’t create a junction folder to my secondary drive either because of permissions issues with the gamepass directory.

I go to download the No Kill Xp mod and look for the file to download it to and it doesn’t show up for Starfield. ThisPC/Users/scham/OneDrive/Documents/MyGames/ then the only two games that show up are Borderlands 2 and Skyrim. What am I missing? I deleted the game and reinstalled it to default c drive just to be sure and then opened the game so it would sync as well and still doesn’t show up in that file path

I'm sure there is a way to get mods to work off an external drive, but the file pathing will change somewhere and I can't say where anything would need to be for certain. You'd have to troubleshoot and see what works.

Good video but very confusing halfway. You say there is only one more things left to do after mapping the download folder to the content setting but then start talking about ini folders? If I’m using vortex and still having to fill the ini notes with mod text lines then isn’t that the same amount of work as manually downloading which I’m currently attempting? Sorry I am having way to many issues and have been struggling for days.

You should not be adding lines to your INI file if you're using vortex. If you've done everything else properly, my guess is that either your vortex file path is wrong, or your INI file is in the wrong location. You have to be exact with both.

I know this is an older video, does script extender still not work for gamepass version? Really don’t want to buy the game again on steam but seems like a lot of good quality mods only work on that. Or would it be worth just waiting for creation kit to come out and see what happens after official mod support

No script extenders work on any gamepass versions, because it replaces the .exe file. Gamepass blocks users from accessing those files to avoid illegal copies, because you don't own the games. I found all the mods I personally wanted without needing script extender, whereas fallout 3 I basically had to buy another version.

Texture mods should be very easy to do through vortex, although I don't use them so I can't say 100%. It's a very simple code change. But any mod can be done manually if necessary

For Vortex, I found that the textures don't work if they contain .dds files. They do work if they contain other file extensions like .nig and .dat. If someone got them to work with dds, you're a legend, and please let me know how you got it to work 😂

Never mind, I got it to work by putting this line right under [Archive] in the regular Starfield.ini file in "C:\XboxGames\Starfield\Content" bInvalidateOlderFiles=1

In windows file manager click view go to show click file name extention. You will now see .txt at end of file name change it to .ini hit enter prompt will say it might break file say yes now it's ini file!

Yeah that usually means you have your games installing off the C drive. These instructions need to be modified if you're using an external hard drive, and I can't confirm if it even works.

can we use Disk Cache Enabler mod .... since i have my game installed on hdd it has dsync issue with audio and stutters ....will it fix it

Did everything still doesnt work

In windows File manager Click view then show then click file name extention. Then you will see .ini or .txt. if you don't see .txt at end of file name then rename the file (text.ini) you get file named text.ini.txt if you do step I said you will see the .txt and when you save as text.ini it will prompt you saying it might break the file click ok and your .txt is now an .ini file. I hate but understand why it is hidden by default but I like to know what type of file I'm clicking on!

Yeah Xbox hides the exe files since you don't actually own the game. Make sure you use the exact file path thats shown where your Xbox app tells you it's listed.

Supposedly yes, assuming it isn't a script mod. Can't say for sure, I don't use it currently.

What are the compatible mods that only works on game pass. This should save everyone time since not all mods work. And you seem to have a good idea of the ones that work. Could you list or recommend any.

Good point. Can't guarantee everything of course, but generally any mods that do not run off the starfield script extender should work for Xbox 👍 basically everything I've tried has worked, and what I do is filter nexus mods to the most popular all time and run through the first 20 pages or so. Just depends if you just want quality of life mods, visual changes/reskins, or cheat mods.

@@SpartanSam0034 when I played BG3 sometimes when I added mods it wouldn’t let me load from Vortex so I tried from Steam, it worked fine so far, but yeah I’m currently adding mods and loading the game up from Gamepass and they are working fine.

So this didn’t work for me, vortex is telling me that mods cannot be deployed.

Correct if your mods cannot deploy, that means the file path for your game is likely incorrect. Unfortunately I cannot guarantee your games are saved to the same location as mine, since anyone can move the files anywhere 😔 but you should see the location when you go to the Xbox app and view the files. Copy and paste that starfield file path right into vortex, and you should be all set.

Followed step by step and still no luck, I've watched 4 videos on this and I literally can't get it to work. Help

I believe gamepass defaults some files to onedrive. It may work if you can find the same folder that would be in the onedrive location elsewhere but results will vary. Most people have issues when they start moving around game files.
