Cornel West: Obama's Response to Trayvon Martin Case Belies Failure to Challenge "New Jim Crow"

www.democracynow.org - For a response to President Obama's comments on the acquittal of George Zimmerman and racism in the United States, we're joined by Dr. Cornel West, professor at Union Theological Seminary and author of numerous books. On Obama's remarks comparing himself to Trayvon Martin, West says: "Will that identification hide and conceal the fact there's a criminal justice system in place that has nearly destroyed two generations of precious, poor black and brown brothers? [Obama] hasn't said a word until now -- five years in office and can't say a word about a 'new Jim Crow.' ... Obama and [Attorney General Eric] Holder -- will they come through at the federal level for Trayvon Martin? We hope so -- [but] don't hold your breath. There's going to be many people who say, 'We see this President is not serious about the criminalizing of poor people.'"

Now, if Trayvon had gotten up after the beating and began to walk away, and Zimmerman then got up and shot Trayvon, you could make a case that Zimmerman murdered him because he got "his ass whooped." But the fact is that Zimmerman fired his gun while Trayvon was still on top of him, giving him repeated blows to the head, and that is self defense. It wouldn't have mattered what color he was. The jury did their job.

My son who was out picking up pizzas for dinner on two separate occasions was pulled over by Massachusetts State Police. He was not speeding. He was asking where he was going and what he was doing in the area. He was then asked if he had a weapon or drugs in the car. He told them no and was still asked to step out of his car, handcuffed, put in the back of the policeman's cruiser and then waited while the statie went through his whole car. This happened in Brockton, Mass.Twenty minutes later He was given back his license and told to have a good evening. My son is white. This The police abuse their power and they get away with it because their word is always taken over the word of the person stopped.

When I was 18, a police officer followed me and a friend in a separate vehicle (we were driving a Buick and an Olds), pulled us over in my neighborhood, and called for backup. A total of 3-4 cars arrived. My friend's vehicle was searched, and I was told that I'd only flip burgers if I got a drag racing ticket (we had been going up to 45 mph in a 35 mph zone). We were both intimidated, and written tickets for reckless driving. I still think this was B.S. BTW, I'm white. (response to Mr. Holder)

A friend of mine were once walking home from a liquor store; we went around the back of the building to enter an alley that led back but were stopped by a friendly homeless guy who regaled us with stories about how he used to "own this city" and other drunken self aggrandizing. Cornell reminds me of that guy. Kinda looks like him and talks just like him.

We can't speak out on our jobs because of fear of a "worsen" poverty than we already have. We as AMERICAN, NOT just a single race, but a WHOLE, we outweigh these puppeteers.... so why don't we ACT against them? It is time for reform!!!!!! That shifting of the burden of proof is precisely why I don't like "Stand your ground" laws. In a fistfight, self-defense is difficult to establish, and that fact tends to encourage people to walk away from an unnecessary confrontation. It defies all reason to make a deadlier form of confrontation fall under less scrutiny. At the end of the day, we should be spending less time looking back, and focusing on high-profile cases where people are already dead, and spend more time looking forward.

I believe, in the case of Trayvon., and Zimmerman, that that whole event was an event between those two,(the shooting) each a little unstable and unpredictable, and ,we,the variety of media controlled, people, see what we want in the case;A wannabe policeman, and a wannabe thug, but neither are what they want to be??we see a Jew, killing a black. a young poor kid, being killed by a middle class white, a gun user protecting himself from an authority hating black. But ,the event is not as simple as most of us see it.

You go out driving with a gun. You see somebody you don't like, although they're not making any trouble. The cops tell you to leave him alone. Instead, you follow, get out of your car. Trouble starts. Before you know it, you're on your back getting beaten up (for some reason). So you shoot and kill the person. Who's most responsible for this tragedy? It ain't the kid walking with a bag of candy. Fucking sickening.

A moot point at best. Trayvon would never have been in the position to attack Zimmerman had he done what he was told to do by dispatch and stayed in his car. The situation starts and ends with that mere fact alone.......which further solidifies the idea that this trial should have been about Zimmerman's decision to pursue Trayvon, not Trayvon's decision to attack Zimmerman in self-defense.

What you don't understand is that it starts with recognizing the problem. The hardest part is which avenue one has to walk through in order to execute them and there are many avenues to go by as an educator, it beneficial to allow the student to reach that conclusion for themselves instead of the teacher ramming their own conclusions down your throat!!! Cornell is brilliant and only speaking of the contradictions which occurs and informing the viewers of it.

    1) I know what was determined by a jury to have occurred based on months of accumulated evidence and testimony, and because I respect the strength of the American judicial system I CAN in FACT make that statement. 2) Treyvon wasn't a child, and standing his ground didn't require violence. If you make the first violent move, you become the aggressor and the law can no longer protect you. Your ignorance may one day get you in legal trouble, assuming it hasn't already.
