Talk to Al Jazeera - Cornel West

Cornel West is one of America’s most provocative intellectuals. He has taught at some of the country’s most prestigious educational institutions, where he’s focused mainly on issues of race, gender and class. He also frequently appears as a commentator on social and political matters. Initially a strong supporter of President Barack Obama, he’s now one of his toughest critics.

As far as I'm concerned, the fact that his views are considered controversial is the true controversy. The same goes for Noam Chomsky.

I thought the interviewer did a great job. I'm not sure why people think he did a bad job. You could also tell he genuinely liked Cornel West telling him he followed his career for a long time, asking realistic questions on how West's deep philosophical beliefs of protecting the innocent play out in reality when there are terrorist groups (how do you eventually decide?), and I liked he was actively listening to West. Great interview in my opinion.

I find that people are somewhat predisposed to dislike all interviewers nowadays... They forget that the job of the interviewer is not to act like a fangirl for the person they're interviewing just because the viewer thinks that person is amazing, they have to challenge some points. Where you can criticize the interviewer is when they repeat questions that were answered to try and squeeze out soundbytes, or cause slip-ups. It's when they show *clear* bias against the interviewee or for an opponent of the interviewee...

If the interviewer does not have an understanding of the material he is asking questions about, he is not doing a good job. If an interviewer is just asking questions and not discussing an issue and pulling back layers too the ideas then her is out of his depth. If an interviewer is just skimming the surface of prevaling political notions...he is not doing a good job. Mediocrity does not deserve a part on the back.

I mean, I could be wrong but it seemed like he genuinely enjoyed Dr. West as a guest and was merely trying to engage with him.

"America, when will you wake up and take justice seriously?" ~ Cornell West If a young man from a middle class family, who appears to have everything he needs, can get caught and fall prey to drug addiction imagine how easy it is for that inner city or Rez young man living with the pressures of unemployment, discrimination and poverty to get snagged. Western society is sick from the historical and ongoing perversions of Colonialism and Capitalism. The US government, socio-political systems and infrastructure have been and continue to be exclusionary with full access reserved within particular sectors. The 13th Amendment is a 150 year old scheme that gives carte blanche to a system of oppression and exclusion; updated, remodeled and repackaged according to the cultural temperature of the era. This historically overt, yet presently covert and malicious, manipulation that has resulted in over 2.3 million incarcerated human beings as if 2014. 'Black' people are 85% of those millions. Men and women taken from their children and communities leaving huge segments of US society distressed and traumatized. Funny, that reminds me of the slave trade practice of deliberately selling men away from their families as punishment. In addition, ‘overseers’ (offi - cer) were issued minor penalties for killing a slave and the average White citizen could indiscriminately kill a Black person with impunity. It appears that not too much has changed. This country is completely corrupt on every level and its culture has disintegrated into a Jerry Springer, narcissistic bully mentality as 'White' males exert arbitrarily assigned authority and have so many privileges that they take for granted how most poor and/or people of color have to struggle to meet basic concerns on a daily basis. It's time to wake up from the American Dreaming; it is a nightmare for the majority of Indigenous People throughout the World. All human beings have basic emotional, physical and Spiritual needs so when they are not met one becomes out of balance and dis-ease arises. *Seeking a release from pain is human nature* (it manifests on multiple levels - not just physical) so it's understandable that people would self-medicate with tobacco and other drugs to find some form of relief that is fast and available which is what this society promotes: don't stop - get your problem handled and get back to work... *now!* No time for mourning, thinking it through, meditation and etc.; just push, push and push past it. You may have a heart attack on your own, limited time. The Truth is: *we are ALL being used as fodder* for USA, Inc and her subsidiary corporations to profit from. We need to cease being controlled by the elite's programming, brainwashing. Liberal, Republican, race, class, gender, religion and etc. are control tools the elite implemented to play their Divide and Conquer Game. They've been playing it for a long time and are *very good* at convincing us that we are separate from one another and do not share the same capacity for hope and to desire accomplishing goals. We must begin to treat one another as equal and care for each other. We are one human family sharing a common experience. It's time to recognize how we are being played and quit bickering among ourselves while they laugh all the way to the bank. *Understanding + Compassion = Wisdom* ----------

Does anyone ever talk about the bad things happening in Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Russia, China, Myanmar. Why only Israel? Its because of Jew hatred and anti-semitism. Its like the kid who gets bullied at school. When other kids see that one kid is being bullied they all join in.

In this interview, Cornel West states unequivocally that he voted for Barack Obama because he was the superior candidate, even though he had serious policy differences with him. That was back then. In the recent election, however, he voted for “sister” Jill Stein, because he was unable to support Hillary Clinton in her opposition to the profoundly ignorant, uneducated, offensive, and colossally unqualified Donald Trump. I suppose that West found the latter less repugnant - and less dangerous - than a candidate who holds academic degrees from two first-rate institutions (Wellesley College and Yale University) and who has served for four years as Secretary of State, not to mention her life-long interest in the well-being of children. Or could it simply be that Mr. West has applied a double standard? In general, one should be wary of anyone who regularly insists that he or she has found “the truth”.

I think he just thought Jill Stein had better morals as a person. Hillary is definitely the most suitable, accomplished politician, but alot of people just see her as a Republican wearing democrat clothing.
