Copy Control Rigs between characters in Unreal Engine 5 (&4)
Save time and money (as time = money) by copying Control Rigs between characters. I'll show you a few different things to consider based on the character skeletons, but this can save time over starting every character from scratch.
HOWEVER - knowing how to build from scratch will help as well, so watch this video too (Control Rig DIY): • Unreal Engine 5 (&4): ...

BONUS INFO!!! David Williams at Unreal Film Academy (who's course you should look into if you are learning Unreal - seriously, only $89) shows a trick for how to use the Backward solve to set the Forward solve control positions (make sure your names all match up first). Save even MORE time with this trick!! Thanks David!! (Watch my full video, to understand the issue, then jump to his here to see the trick in action: kzread.info/dash/bejne/kaN3tZawiarZhpM.html)

I love the fact that the Metahuman is setup so that you can just change the preview mesh to Metahuman, then save it and boom, you can now access control rig via your Metahuman, and then make ultra quick adjustments on the fly. Now we just need them to make more clothes options and better body options, and it'll be incredible. But something tells me when FAB replaces the Unreal Marketplace, that they are going to flood that thing with bodies and clothes lol

If you need a different pose this is so much faster than trying to export to Blender and then make changes and the re import back into UE and I have had nothing but issues trying this process so changing poses is amazing using the RIG.

Hi, thank you for an amazing tutorial! I'm kind of new to UE, so I would appreciate a little help. When I change the mesh as you do at 8:30 of this video, my character is laying on the ground, 90 degrees rotated. Do you know how can I fix this issue? Thank you!
Hi JC, thanks for the tutorial but when I try to use the shortcut CTRL+PERIOD it doesn't do anything and doesn't seem to go into the mode to move the control. Do you know if that has changed and if so what is the new keyboard shortcut? thanks
Awesome breakdown! Theres a little trick you can do to instantly fix the controls. Basically you run the forwards solver through the backwards setup which places all the controls on the relevant bones, then you set those as defaults and switch it back. Here's the process if you are interested: kzread.info/dash/bejne/kaN3tZawiarZhpM.html Loving these Control rig videos!

Genius! Thanks David, I'm pinning a comment on that as it's super important info - and totally makes sense as that's what the backward solve does, moves the controls to the joint's positions. Clever trick, nice and smooth, saves even more time!! Cheers!!

@@ZiggyGameDev have you find a way to fix this ? I'm having the same problem.
Of course now, you can use Procedural Rigging to share rigs of various sizes and different skeletons!
Im trying to do this with the CR_Mannequin rig with the tutorial you linked in the pinned comment but im unable to replug in the backwards solve. Do you know whats causing this?
How do i transfer the skeleton from my character rigged on blender to unreal skeleton mannequin? or do i have to import my mesh and set as mannequin skeleton and do this process you teach? THank you
In sequencer when i move the arms of my characters, it goes through their body. Is there any way i can turn this off? I also want meshes to interact with each other with grappling moves, but the arms goes through as if the other characters is not there! Any solution?
is there anywhere to download a default ue4 control rig that you can copy into your project and then change the skeleton?

Nevermind, found the one on UE Market for free and downloaded and followed your video and works, save a lot of time, thank you.
I tried to transplant the rig and the mesh is fd up need help like the head disappeared only in previewer but yeah still isn't working
I have a small problem: The model what I want to use isn't made for UE5 and when I add it to the mesh it comes off rotated and too big, I'm bit new on UE5 so I cannot find a solution to fit it with the rig :,)
Thanks! Which control rig are you using on the UE4 Mannequin? The Epic one from 4.26?
@3dJC

Good and timely question! For this video yes the 4.26 CR -- BUT the 5.0.2 hot fix that just came out includes the new v5 mannequin control rig. If I get a chance soon, I think I'll do a breakdown of how that CR is put together and works...

@@3dJC That would be awesome, i tried to follow the tutorial and didnt work. I just realized that the new one is not the same control rig for the older mannequin. Im waiting to se the video, I love your channel btw :D.
Ok this was the video that had the shortcut.
Hi, I'm having an issue when I bake animation to control rig. Both ball controls are twisted to a strange angle. How do I fix that? I've been trying the method you taught us using transform and shape transform under Rig graph to fix the issue but it went even worse. Would you educate me how to deal with issues like this? Thank you😀

Hmmmm not sure what the issue could be? I’m kinda unavailable these days but there is a discord channel for control rig that you might try to post on and see if someone can help.
Would I need to do all this for the Paragon characters that I got from the UE Market Place?
@3dJC
2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, those characters do not come with their own control rigs, so you gotta either make them from scratch (link to a video on that in the description too) or do what this video shows and copy an existing one that you already have from another character.
Hi, it's posible to put the control rig from UE5 in the maniquín UE4 but working in UE5? I have my project with UE5 but I'm using the ue4 mannequin and I would like to use the control rig, you recommend to me download the control rig of ue4.26? Or I can to do that with the UE5. Thank you!!
@3dJC
2 жыл бұрын
I think the "easier" route is to grab the 4.26 control rig demo project, and open it in 5 so you get the "old" mannequin control rig and use it in 5 just fine. If you really wanted the new 5.0.2+ mannequin Control Rig, and copy it onto the old mannequin, it seems "possible" but not simple - I played with it a bit using the stuff in my video here - but there is quite a bit of differences between skeletons, and the newer more complex CR has names for things that the old mannequin doesn't have (like those 2 upper arm twist joints), so not sure if that can even be worked around... So if v4 CR would work for you, I'd try that first. Lemme know if you ever give the v5 CR a go and it works!

@@3dJC I followed your process for the last skeleton using a UE5 control rig and a UE4 skeleton. Seemed to work fine, since the proportions are the same, it just ignored the missing bones. I suppose downloading the officil UE4 rig is the smarter choice though.

I assume you found the Control Rig Mannequin project from the marketplace for that, which is the one they made for UE4. You can open the project in 4, then migrate the mannequin to an existing UE5 project (rt-click on the mannequin and choose "asset actions->migrate", and leave all the boxes selected. That "should" work, haven't tested actually, but it's a common workflow in general... - lemme know if it works for you?
