    Very cool! The ship was incredible and it's not often you get to see an autopilot landing!

    This was an interesting combination: Autoland and the ship very close underneath our approach path. Both are very rare things. Almost all our landings are done manually. We only do autolands if the weather is not good enough for a manual landing.

    @@ApproachandDepartureVideos Indeed, it's a rare sight to see autoland unless it's testing for certification.. usually pilots I see turn it off just before touching down because they can usually see the runway as by then. I thought it was great how it handled that crosswind.. it kicked the rudder perfectly! And that ship was so cool looking! I had spent several minutes checking it out and then saw that you had put a still of it at the end. I always watch your videos several times to watch different aspects of it. I thought I had just missed the side stick view the first time because I was zoomed up but knew it had been autoland when you said autopilot off after touchdown. So cool!! Thank you again for doing these videos!!!

  • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

    @@crypto1701 Yes, I agree. It handled the crosswind better than expected. This was a perfect landing. Autoland is only possible if the airport and the systems are certified for CAT 3 operations. Also, the airport needs to make sure that the signal is not disturbed by other airplanes, ground vehicles … The result is that we only do autolands if ATC clears us for an autoland approach and a manual landing may be impossible due to the weather.

    @@ApproachandDepartureVideos That has to be very strange to let it land itself! I know you're ready to take control but you're not in control at the most dangerous point in the flight, other than maybe takeoff, and that has to be a bit unnerving!

    Thanks for watching and your feedback! Yes, you are 100 % right. We are very well trained for this situation. But it feels somehow strange if we let the airplane land itself. Most of the time the weather is good enough for manual landings. Autolands are very rare.

    @@ApproachandDepartureVideos Would the plane autobrake with reversers if you had left the autopilot on or are the reversers something that you have activate manually? I was reading an article yesterday that said the average person couldn't land a plane like in the Airport movies, based on a test group of 4 people. The did say communications would be the hardest thing to figure out but it should be tuned to some channel that someone is listening to and, since autopilot can land the plane, it seems like all a flight attendant (I'm assuming they'd take over if both pilots were incapacitated) would have to do is turn the parking brake before it goes off the runway.. if the autopilot can do the majority of the braking.

  • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

    @ApproachandDepartureVideos

    Жыл бұрын

    @@crypto1701 The reversers must be activated manually. Before that, also the thrust levers must be moved manually to idle. The autobrake system slows the airplane down. The autopilot has nothing to do with the autobrake system. The autopilot keeps the airplane on the centerline after landing. Until the autopilot is switched off.

    As a passenger many people relax and start to think about the onward journey shortly after a landing. But with you and the FO you still have the taxiing to do - which in this case needed great care due to the low visibility. I admire your ability to stay focussed until the journey is fully over. The ship appearing was like a mirage - wonderful. Thank you!

While I love the intrigue, in-depth investigations and drama of channels like Mentour Pilot, I love your content because it’s so relaxing. It’s just watching & listening to professionals doing their job. There’s beautiful views in different weather and relaxing voices talking through checklists. Hello Werner, as always, thanks a lot for watching and your friendly words! Yes, low visibility means autoland. We do not need to see something prior landing. But we need a minimum of 75 meters RVR to do an autoland. Reason is that we have to see a little bit to leave the runway and to taxi to the gate. We could do manual landings down to 550 meters RVR. Usually, we even do autolands earlier than 550 meters to avoid a go around if the weather gets worse during the approach. Greetings to Styria!

    Classic 160 kts until 4 DME at EKCH leaves little room for getting fully establish in time. Juuust made it at the 800' here it seems (which was a special condition with early flaps 3 conf as I understood). Nice timing. And very nice seeing an approach to EKCH, and autoland in action.

    Thanks for watching and your detailed observations! Yes, 160 to 4 miles final requires some special measures, like flaps 3 before the gear and the gear down at about 4 DME. Also the stabilization height was lowered to 800 feet. Due to the low approach speed and good gliding characteristics, the A319 is usually established at 800 feet. The A320 would be established earlier due to a higher approach speed.

  • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

    @ApproachandDepartureVideos

    Жыл бұрын

    We do not get personal reports of our landings as long as everything is in limits. All the flight data are recorded and tracked without reference to a certain pilot for trend monitoring reasons. If we are interested, we can generate an electronic report after landing which shows the G-load of the last landing.

    Great video, we flew in and out of CPH last week from EDI. There seemed to be long ATC delays because of staff capacity problems. On the return leg we left the gate only to get parked at de-icing platform B for 35 minutes. One question: With a Cat 3 landing, do ground operations have to reduce capacity significantly to keep ILS critical areas clear?

  • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

    @ApproachandDepartureVideos

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks! I am sorry to hear about your delay. How much CAT 3 operations reduces the capacity is depending (among other things) on the layout of the airport. I think that Copenhagen only reduces the flow rate a little bit because it uses the other runway for takeoff and after landing, the high speed turnoffs will help to get the planes fast out of the ILS critical area.

    Thanks for watching and your great feedback! It does everything automatically, including the flare and the rollout on the runway. You can also see that it reduces the power automatically to idle in the flare. The FMA shows Power Idle before I reduced the thrust lever to idle. This only happens during an autoland approach. During a manual approach with autothrust on, the thrust is set for the approach speed until the thrust levers are moved to idle by the pilot during the flare.

    4 ай бұрын

    Thank you very much for watching and for supporting the channel as a member! No, autoland is not dependent on the QNH. The airplane is following for the vertical path the glideslope signal from the airport and the landing flare is based on the signals of the radio altimeters of the airplane.

    wow that was awesome 🤩 One question: You did (non standard) Flaps 3 & said "So we only need to be established at 800ft." Are the 800ft, when non standard Flaps 3, just a company procedure or a general one?

  • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

    @ApproachandDepartureVideos

    Жыл бұрын

    Good question. ATC required us to fly 160 knots or more up to 4 nautical miles final. In cases like this, the usual 1000 feet gate is reduced to 800 feet. This is a company regulation. Without this regulation we would be unable to follow such speed instructions because the plane needs some time (and altitude) to slow down.

  • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

    For me in the cockpit the low visibility approach is always very interesting because the plane does the landing by itself. We just look and see and check if everything is right. Everything is redundant so that a failure of a system would be no problem. Worst case would be that we abort the approach and divert to another airport with better weather.

  • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

    @ApproachandDepartureVideos

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the good feedback! The 3 minutes are for the cooldown of the engine. In general, the engine manufacturer wants us to wait with the shutdown for 3 minutes after high thrust application. We could switch the engine off earlier, but on the long run, this would not be good for the longevity of the engine.

    I do not know. These stop watches can be used by us pilots for whatever we deem necessary. And we do not need to tell the other pilot why we use it. Sometimes we use it for procedures, like timed visual approaches or holdings ... Then we have to use it in accordance to the procedure.

  • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

    @ApproachandDepartureVideos

    Thanks for watching and your good feedback! During an autoland, the flare is done automatically by the airplane. During the flare, the airplane also automatically retards the thrust to idle. The movement of the thrust levers by the pilot to idle at 10 feet just confirms this and matches the thrust lever position with the actual thrust. Also, the pilot needs to move the thrust levers into (idle or more) reverse after touchdown. Everything else is done by the autopilot. The plane also brakes automaically as long as the pilots have switched on the autobrake prior landing.

  • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

    @ApproachandDepartureVideos

    Thanks for the feedback and your thoughts! I do not think that there is a limitation in regard of the tiller. As an easy rule, we use the rudder pedals during takeoff and landing and during taxiing, we use the rudder pedals or the tiller. The tiller is especially needed for sharp turns at low speed.
