Cool Cat Portugal - Exploring Caldas da Rainha

Caldas da Rainha is a thermal spa mid-sized town, rich in sulphur waters, which are considered excellent treatments for the skin and bone ailments. 🧖‍♀️ The city’s name is literally translated into “Queen’s Spa” 👑 , thanks to Queen D. Leonor who founded the city in the 15th century. 👸
The city is famously known for its “larger-than-life” Portuguese caricaturist and sculptor, Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, who is credited for creating the popular cartoon character “Zé Povinho” representing the ordinary working-class Portuguese person 🇵🇹 Zé Povinho is somewhat an unofficial personification of the Portuguese folk! 😺 The sculptor has also created the beautiful fruit and vegetable shaped ceramics. 🍉 Speaking of Art 🎨, Caldas da Rainha also has a rich artistic heritage! 👨‍🎨 One of the most successful and famous public art and design Universities in the country, the ESAD.CR, Upper School of Arts and Design, which offers a wide range of courses like plastic arts, ambient design, industrial design, ceramic and glass design, graphic and multimedia design, product design, typographic design, theater, sound, image, and cultural management and more. 🎭
Caldas da Rainha also holds a privileged location in the Center - just around 1 hour away from Lisbon, 40 minutes from Leiria and around 1h30 from Coimbra 😍 It’s also very close to some of the most beautiful historical cities and beaches in the Central area - like the Medieval town of Óbidos 🏰 the gorgeous shell-like bay beach 🏖 of S. Martinho and the striking Nazaré, known for its world record waves 🌊.
On a not so bright note, although Caldas da Rainha does have a railway station served by the Linha do oeste, the trains are all regional meaning that they all make frequent local stops 🚂. However, there is a good bus transportation system with a bus station providing access to various destinations within Portugal and interurban services to nearby towns and villages around Caldas 👏

Olá JP! Thank you so much, it is always good to hear this kind of feedback 😻 Suggesting the best areas in Portugal that fits your taste and needs is not easy to do without knowing more information. Fortunately our country is so diverse that it is not professional from us to be so general, so may I suggest booking an Advisory Call with our expert Ana Caramujo? She will help you to narrow your search and tell you all about the best areas for you plus answer all your questions about the relocation process and more ( www.savvycatrealty.com/advisory) Hope this helps 😸 Obrigada e até já!

Olá Ana and thank you for your overview of Caldas da Rainha and Obidos. I’ve heard of both communities several times but it’s always helpful to hear your commentary from a livability perspective. My question: You mentioned that the nearby coastal town of Foz do Arelho can be windy. 🌬 Isn’t that true for most communities along the ocean? 🤔 Muito obrigado. 🙏🏻

Hi! 👋 You're right, almost all coastal cities here quite windy all year long. The exception would probably be the Southern coastal cities in Algarve, which can be windy as well but not as much compared to areas like Peniche, Foz do Arelho, Ericeira, etc Thank you for watching! 😊

@@SavvyCatRealty Thank you for your reply and additional commentary in Algarve. We didn’t experience much wind in Tavira when we visited but always hear about the wind along the western coast. Obrigado. 🙏🏻

I am pretty sure I want to live and eventually buy in Caldas or at least near Caldas (currently living in the USA, coming to Portugal in the beginning of 2023). We have to rent for a year first as part of the immigration process.....does Caldas have many or any rentals? We eventually want to purchase a villa with a great energy rating on a plot of at least 4000m2. Obrigada

Hi Shari! Although Caldas da Rainha is a great place to live and it's getting more and more in demand, one of its biggest problems is that it does not have many rental offers.

Hi Ana. Thank you for your videos. My husband and I visited Portugal last year and spent a few days in Caldas. We loved the area, but I found the cell phone service and internet to be a bit spotty. Is that common? I would love to see a video on cell service/internet in Portugal. I know Madeira has 5G almost everywhere now, but I am curious for us remote workers what you think about cell/internet service on the mainland. Thanks!

Hi Renee 👋 Internet and phone service are usually pretty good in most center cities, Caldas da Rainha being one of them. We've personally haven't encountered much problems with internet in Caldas. About 5G coverage, here's a useful map that shows the coverage according to the main carriers: www.nperf.com/en/map/PT/-/-./signal/

@@reneebrown908 Renee, we live in Caldas. While the public free wifi can be spotty and slow, almost every business offers free wifi as well and that's much faster. The wifi/cable service we get at home is incredibly fast and stable. I have 2 teen boys with game systems, phone, and laptops, plus all my husband's and my devices and we've never had an issue.
