I went through this exercise several years ago, and like you, I was tired of paying an exorbitant amount for the name brands and the formulations available on fleabay left much to be desired. I used to work for a wax supplier, so this was a pretty easy task. My mix is the basic 50/50 beeswax and petroleum wax, but instead of using a paraffin based petroleum wax, I use a 160 degree F. melting point Microcrystalline wax. This gives a lube that has a tacky feel and is fairly soft, so it can be applied by hand, yet has a melting point that prevents it from running in hot weather. It also will not affect powder in any way. I have used it in my Lyman bullet sizing press as well as pan lubing.
@richardlouden31783 жыл бұрын
Truly a versatile product crossing trades. As an apprentice cabinetmaker back in the 1960's I learned to keep a wax bowl ring on my bench to lube screws before insertion. Today's battery fired drill-drivers didn't exist back then and boy was that waxy ring a blister saver. I wonder what other trades have still other uses.

I wonder if that mix of waxes would be suitable for wax-potting electric guitar pickups? I bet it would melt at close to the same temperature, and if not, a little beeswax or a little paraffin wax added will "adjust" the melt point down or up.

It's a great feeling to find something cheaper and does exactly what the more expensive item does. Every weekend when we would go out on our boat and spend the weekend on the water we would come back with a brown stain completely around the boat. By the way this is the Chesapeake Bay I'm speaking of. I was using this stuff that was almost $30 a bottle that you mixed up into a bucket of water. It really did not seem to work so I googled it. Come to find out if you go to the dollar store and buy toilet bowl cleaner you get a bottle that's about 10 to 12 oz and it's only a dollar. I bought one to test it and sure enough it works better than the name brand and only cost a dollar. We went back down there and cleaned the shelf out of the cleaner and hit the other dollar store a little further away and clean them out. That's one thing I like about the internet is people like yourself and others that share good information for everyone. Thank you for putting this video up. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New year.

Kevin Breckenridge, find out what the safe maximum black powder load is and never go over it, I have a ruined brass framed Colt from over-loads. Also, never get distracted when loading. I under-loaded a cylinder once while yakking at the range and that led to a barrel obstruction and a barrel split from end to end. A '58 Remington 44 doesn't shoot very well with little or no powder.

I read that using wax rings, that are made to seal toilets, are not good for use in your expensive BP rifles and revolvers. Supposedly the wax isn't pure bees wax. And that it has acids from other ingredients that are corrosive to the barrels of BP guns. Like I said it's something I read. Make of it what you will.

I found (after lots of hunting!) and MSDS on this stuff. I found it so close to Alox to be about indistinguishable. I still gotta find the right ratio for my 45/45/10. I use mineral spirits to help break it down. I did do the parrafin also. When its mixed, it takes a long time to set up and is still sorta sticky. On my 45 acp, this stuff flat works! Zero leading! That explains why Home Depot is suddenly out of toilet rings.
That is freakin' awesome! And the timing was perfect for me - I was just about to order 10 tubes. Now I don't have to. Thank you, sir!
Oatey rings are now made from Slack Wax (unrefined feed) and Microcrystalline Wax (refined feed). The combination works very well in my 1858 and 1873 black powder revolvers.
The toilet rings give a nice finish on stocks as well - I learned that from Mark Novak's youtube channel.

Been using beeswax and petroleum jelly [Vaseline] for well over 50 years. This ring is premixed. Very handy! Having to order the beeswax takes time, and cannot be found in stores. The wax ring is 7 mi away at the local hardware store. Much easier. Thanks for the tip!
I like these vidyas. Cheap alternatives to overpriced store bought stuff. It's like if they know you need it for something important suddenly the price jumps three times.
You can't go wrong with a little lube in your groove!
Been using toilet rings to run thru my sizers for 40 years. Good information in this video. For cast rifle & pistol bullets.
Been lubing Conicals with that for a few years. Works great. I even melted it down and brushed it into a pair of old leather hunting boots. They came back to life. Good stuff there!
Black powder revolver shooters, this also works VERY well for sealing your loaded chambers!! Will soon try on muzzle loader long gun rb patches.

I like this guy. Finding things cheap and under cutting costs. Cheap lube making, wax for lubing. Yeah I dig this.
I can see they're gonna make great stocking stuffers this Christmas - especially for that special someone who doesn't have to fix a toilet! No matter what duration of lock-down is in effect, reloaders can always find something to do. ;-)

I found a perfect deal as well at H/F...Fine walnut shell sandblasting media 25 lbs for $13.00 VS almost $30.00 for 10 lbs of fine walnut shell "tumbling" media (to clean your brass cases before reloading) exact same thing !!!
Thank you for all you do for us. You are an amazing resource for new reloaders.

The newer ones of these no longer have beeswax in them, they are all petroleum based "Slack wax". As long as your powder does not contain Sulfur this is still fine. Avoid using black powder with these.
Nice to see you in front of the camera Fortune Cookie and The tour of your Christmas decorations was pleasant, too. Thanks for the tips and Merry Christmas!

A truly great find and video. Thank you sir, I do mold my own bullets and size and lube them... Thumbs Up!
Great idea!
Good video Steve. we should all learn to make our own bullet lube. for those that tridiagonal lube bullets. my formula is 1/3 vaseline, one 1/3 paraffin wax, and 1/3 plumbing ring material. Just blend them in an old steel coffee can over low heat. it smokes a bit, however, it works great.-Dave

Thank you for a great idea. I like your videos. Happy reloading!
I have official validation from none other than one of the guys who taught me casting and PC'ing! Played with this idea a year or so back lol. It works! I had suspected this. Man. Testament to the Teacher! Thank you FC45LC!

Thanks for the video! Subscribed. That is a really good source of beeswax, albeit not pure. Around here (Ontario Canada) we have honey farms all over the place, most of them even have a roadside stand, and they often have beeswax to sell by the pound. That's where I get mine, and five pounds for a couple of dollars lasts a LONG time!
Your lights look good. That is awesome thanks for sharing. I hope no one need a toilet seal in my area this week. Lol...
