A nice quick system. I used your advise on this two weeks ago when I started casting my 7.62 x 39. I triple lube those bullets but my .357 I use alox and a small amount of mineral spirits. I still pan lube all my led bullets as well.

frank szabo - Yes, it certainly does work well. Powder coating is also a good way to go, but the 45/45/10 is still the fastest way to lube a whole lot of bullets . It's the reason Country Boy Prepper really likes the 45/45/10 as his family shoots CAS together and lots of bullets are needed. Good shootin' to ya, FC

Thanks for the mention FortuneCookie45LC and you are right no fuss and a lot like mixing epoxy. I found if I put to much in the jar to much is wasted on the sides of the jar and have been able to tumble extra bullets with out adding any more solution to the jar. And the best part is no issues with leading.

Hey man. Yes once coated you put it on a tray and bake at 400 for 10 min. I was shooting the bayou bullets mostly because the place they are made is about 15 min from the house where they are made. You can now even buy there coating but we started doing this with our 300 blk 150 and 240 cast bullets. I pushed then as fast as I could in a 06 to test the coating and stood up.

I have just tried this recipe and I will never go back to Lee liquid Alox alone, never ever. This worked so well on the 40 and 45, I forgot to size my 38 bullets before lubing them up. I used an empty 1 lb powder bottle and rolled it around the garage, worked great too. Cheers

It wouldn't be my preferece, but I have been having a hard time finding an affordable spire point 30 cal mold. I opted to get the 160 grain Lee mold meant for 7.62x39. In straight linotype, it drops bullets like a dream, which weigh 155 grains and are perfectly round and .312" exactly. I was hoping they would smaller than stated, but I am pleased with how easy the mold is to use. This is the first rifle mold for the polycoat system, and I will be sharing my results.

I know lots of you out there getting good results and lots of videos on pan lubing, but it's not for me. I insist upon volume production, and pan lubing can't get me there. But the final goal we all share is good shootin' (means accuracy, consistency and no leadin'), and if you like pan lube - BAM go for it- Good shootin' to ya....

HammergHank100-Great question. No, any cast bullet can be lubed with this system, and it works very well for leading control and accuracy. The tumble lube designs do have an advantage though in that they tend to drop out of the cast at the diameter we want, whereas other molds tend to cast a bit larger. But my favorite molds cast at proper diameters, and we do have the choice to send molds back to Lee if they cast too large. And we can adjust cast size by +or- .001 with alloy also.

commonsensehomestead-Shawn-great question - the plain JPW is fine for lower than standard loads of any caliber-I still do that also. The 45/45/10 came into being because of 1) plain tumble with LLA was messy, sticky, tacky, and ugly 2) plain JPW was slick and greasy (that's what makes it work, after all) - and the 45/45/10 solved those - You could argue that this system is good for all bullet-applicable handgun cast bullet lubing - see2

I made my first batch of cast bullets this weekend. I made about 25 each 45ACP (Lee TL452-230-2R) and 357 Semi-wad cutter (Lee C358-158 SWC). I lubed them with the 45/45/10 and it was a delight. I made too much and put in a little too much paint thinner, but when they dried they are well lubed and not very sticky at all. I saved the extra for next time and see how that works out. GunFun ZS- So that's the guy we owe thanks to for this fine system… Thanks, that's good to know…lubing, sizing, lubing sounds like a derivation from the LLA recommendation - But if I've got to run them through a sizer, then I might as well lube there with my RCBS while I'm at it, so the real advantage is when bullets do not need to be sized, then we are in blitz business with 45/45/10. That is sweet indeed…Best Regards...

Some of us don't have (or want) $180 sizing machines. 45/45/10 can accomplish the same thing faster, and with less smoke using a cheap lee sizer. Obviously a mold that drops the desired size is preferable, but it also gives options. For instance, I can cast .312 bullets and size them down a little to use for 30/06, without having to buy another mold.

Great video. Gonna try this myself. I've used LLA but not this 45/45/10 method. I think the tumble, size, tumble method mentioned below was referencing the Lee nose first push through sizer. That's how I did my LLA bullets in the past but it's messy and sticky. Thanks for the great videos.

  • @FortuneCookie45LC

452Rob-The beauty of the 45/45/10 is that you have all the benefits of LLA without the stickiness, mess and bad appearance of the rounds afterwards. Your lead bullets will have a neat slickish patina, and effective against leading. Yes, you can tumble 45/45/10 - then size - then tumble again - one caution though, you probably already do this - either LLA or 45/45/10 - do it in a ventilated area, fumes…Happy Holidays...

  • @FortuneCookie45LC

Patrick Floyd- addendum reply - it is by volume, and eyeballing is all you need to do, equal parts of LLA and JPW and eyeball 1/10 of that volume with MS. And there is less smoke than when we shoot with grooves full of grease. Quick, easy and effective - hard not to like this system…Thanks for your fine question...

hokanut - The beauty of the 45/45/10 system is that it does not require precision mixing - just eyeball. Plus, if you feel a little more need of lubrication (like for rifle shooting, just tweak your mix a little heavier on the alox, lighter on the JPW, and a little lighter on the mineral spirits (paint thinner, engine degreaser)). The system is easy and foolproof and not sticky. Plus, very economical - a Lee tube of Liquid Alox (LLA), a can of Johnson's Paste Wax from Home Depot, some paint thinner. Or you can buy the stuff either a la carte or ready made from White Label Lubes at www.lsstuff.com/ And you can't beat it for speed - plus no leading, looks and feels great... Once you do this, you will want to do all your cast bullets this way...Why even think about powder coating and all that mess. I just did some cast bullet videos featuring 45/45/10 also. Best to ya

commonsensehomestead-rely3-However, you might be referring to sorting as in quality control. When I dry quenched cast bullets, I look them over and cull out any reject bullets. When I lube or size bullets, rejects are culled out. And whenever bullets are tumbled in JPW or 45/45/10, I spot any surviving rejects and cull them out. I almost never get to my reloading presses with reject bullets. So sorting for QC is part of other procedures and not a separate procedure-No Extra Work FC45LC policy

Lawschool has takes most of my time, so it will not happen soon. I made time the weekend my video camera was stolen, so that puts me off. I did cast aproximately 20 lbs of those 155 grain pure linotype bullets, which I plan to powdercoat, then test with trailboss, then some IMR 4350 I have. the bullets "cut" with a #F art pencil which means they are 15-18 BHN. Lee's formula suggests optimum load is 35-39 grains of 4350 for 2000-2150 FPS. If I could get the hardness up to 20 BHN then ~ 2250 FPS

Really nice. Easier than Recluse's cook method. Wonder if at this point, the MS are really needed? I'm about to try a similar mix, using other protective waxy oil brand and other floor wax brand, since LLA is pretty rare/expensive here and I can get 2 gallons of the other stuff for the price of a 4oz bottle. As for wax, JPW is not available here anywhere, going to use some old style paraffin/carnauba/solvent floor wax that's pretty common 😬👍

wo0dzm3n-wow-almost missed your comment as didn't show up in inbox. Any kind of coating that let's us shoot rifle velocities without jackets or leading is AOK with me. But I'm still hesitant to do it myself if there is oven baking involved. And for pistol shooting, the system has to be as fast to do as the effective systems we have now. Right now, I'd be inclined to buy commercially coated bullets for my rifle shooting as I don't shoot anywhere the volumn of ammo there as with my pistols.Regards

I have been powder coating and it works but it takes a lot of time and effort. I have never tried anything else. I want to try your 45/45/10 system. I have always re-sized using my Lee Re-sizing dies I have (I have quite a collection) I feel Resistance on the bullets as they go through the dies. My question is can I do this to the bullets twice? I think I need to continue re-sizing and I need to do something to lube before I re-size. Or would it be OK if I just used some Dillon case lube to size them and then do the 45/45/10 system. Would the Dillon case lube from the re-sizing mess up the 45/45/10 lube? Thank You for all your videos I have learned a lot from you!

+Delbert McCord -- Wow, there are a lot of traditional bullet lubers like myself who have gravitated into doing powder coating, but now we are running into casters that are doing powder coating before they ever get into doing any traditional lubing. So here is the sequence - say you are shooting 9mm and your gun likes the usual .355" bullets. That means that your cast bullets need to be .356-.357" for best results. If your bullets cast at that, even if they are not perfectly round (does not matter to accuracy within reason of course), you will not have to size them. If you then do the 45/45/10 - just tumble lube, dry overnight and load 'em. If your bullets are too big and bulge your cases, you will have to size them. Then the recommendation is to 45/45/10 tumble the bullets first, let them dry overnight, then run them thru the Lee sizer. Then tumble lube the bullets again, dry overnight before loading them. Each tumble cycle takes a total of 10-12 minutes of actual applied time so it is fast and easy to do... Less work and time than powder coating, but as you know, if your oven is big enough, you can process more bullets per unit of time... Best Regards to ya, FC

chevy6299-Addendum reply - Thanks for the compliment, but I consider myself a practical experienced reloader. The experts are the benchrest boys - when they shoot a 1/2 MOA 10 shot group, it's a bad day at the range. When you talk to them, they are referencing .001" case shoulder setbacks and 20 step bore conditioning procedures...Takes them a full week to load 20 rounds of perfectly tuned ammo. And they speak a language we practical experienced guys don't understand...Have a great day..

Just a tip from a fellow tightwad. I recently found that you can get Lee Liquid Alox, without the Lee brand name for dirt cheap. Less than $18 shipped for a huge 32 oz. jug! Just google Liquid X-lox or White Label lube from LsStuff. I just received my first jug and it is absolutely identical to the Lee product. I can't understand why more people aren't talking about it.

commonsensehomestead-reply2-I have the same problem with my 6 cav 429-200 Lee mold - one cavity throws large bullets - .434" so I don't fill that cavity. Should have returned that mold to Lee for replacement-still might do that even though used that mold quite a bit. You should not have to sort bullets by casting size - if you even feel that you have to - that mold goes back to Lee pronto- that is extra work and not in any FC45LC policies. see3...

Hey FC! So after you are doing this for a pretty while, I want to ask you some questions which came up to me, if you would be so kind? I´ve read, that TL bullets mess up semi automatic pistols. They said, that it could happen that the TLB cause malfunctions, especially in cold weather conditions. What is your experience in this? What would you say after this time to accuracy between sized and not sized TLBs, is there a difference or not? And is there a way to size the bullets after being seated by crimping? What I mean: Is there a crimp die on the market where you can downsize your tld bullets in the case? Response would be great. Have a nice day, Ouw.

Ouwkackemann- There are lots of shooters who cast TL bullets for their 9, 40, and 45 auto pistols. Lee sells a lot of those molds. I read a lot of reviews of happy casters. I've found TL bullets to shoot every bit as accurate as non-TL designs…if TL molds cast bullets too large, I'd send it back to Lee or Midway (if that is where it was bought) as sizing TL bullets can be frustrating. No, you should not entertain sizing bullets after they are loaded - messes up the neck tension. The Lee Factory Crimp Die is designed to correct bulges and irregularities caused by crimping, not wholesale oversized bullets already seated (minor oversized will be corrected though). Best Regards

bluegoosehead - sorry to not get back to you sooner - was out of town on business. You are referring to the practice of heating down the JPW to get the carrier out of it…45/45/10 no need. Just add the JPW straight up with the LLA. Eyeball the 10% mineral spirts, add bullets and tumble for 45 secs. Done

Hey, man, you are using bullets with large grooves, so, I don't know how my methods will work. I'm casting .45 cal bullets for BPCR, WITH A seaco rig. I bought a sizing die .001" larger than the expected diameter of the mold. Just to lube, not to size. I bought the mold to cast bullets .001" over the groove dia. Still, I get rubbing on the parting lines. Okay, now, here is what I've always done, for my single shots. I pour the lube,(NRA lube works well, although, I' ve tried many obsolete recipes, until I got the NRA book on cast bullets. Duh.) I pour the lube into a pot, then after melted, I dip my bullets in, in an orderly fashion. I put maybe thirty bullets in, at a time. I then use needle nose pliers to lift them out, with the grooves filled. I place them on newsprint, to drain, and they always come out completely filled. The grooves for smokeless powder are much smaller than BP grooves. The size grooves will vary, so, so, you have to adjust the hardness of your lube, to match the rifle, or, maybe, pistol. Lubes tend to be soft for BPCR, and Scheutzen. Pistol lubes are harder. I got immediate success with my .45-70, with SPG lube. It just works, right out of the box. This is valuable, when you've spent time experimenting with lube, like I have. Many of the old ingredients go by different names now, and some, are no longer available. Like, Japan Wax, and sperm oil. Who wouldn't like to know how SPG is made? Mark

Mark Nelson - Your modified pan lubing technique is in the same vein that black powder bullets have been lubing for a long time by many BP shooters. As you have noted, the big deep grease grooves lend well to that. Smokeless shooters of today can definitely use lubrisizers, 45/45/10 tumble lube, LLA lube, or go with powder coating. Pan lubing of today's smokeless bullets can lead to mess and frustration. SPG is a great lube for black powder shooters...Not sure what the formulation is, but I'd just buy it... Best Regards, FC

Hey FC Steve, checking back in with a happy report from the indoor range today. Made up a batch of a couple hundred .38 SPL with a mid-load of 4.0gns Win231. Maybe 800+fps. Worked well with the Lee 105 SWC target as well as 158 RN and 158 RF - all tumbled in White Label 45/45/10 to the thin coat you show. Sized to .357 and re-tumbled and they dried non-sticky. Very pleasant to shoot with no noticeable smoke or smell and hitting point-of-aim. To best validate the test I used my new Ruger LCR fresh-out-of-the-box so I had a factory-clean bore for reference. Wow FC, almost NO leading after putting 150 through the LCR! I could barely make out some 'peanut butter' smear at the forcing cone. I put the last 50 through my old WW2 Lend-Lease S&W Victory .38 - as tired as she was, no leading. Cleaning was a breeze; I only used the brush for a quick run down the bore and the powder residue in the cylinders. Thanks from New England's Hot-Lead Zone ;-)

I wonder if I use the 45-45-10 before swaging; if the coating will flake or chip off? If "yes", then my thoughts are to coat my air-gun pellets with the 45-45-10 formula after swaging, BUT, I would much rather swage the pellets with the 45-45-10 formula before I swage the cast pellets, as I feel it will help the swaging process go more smoothly? I have also considered just coating the cast pellets with the SCJohnson Paste Wax before swaging and then using the 45-45-10 formula. I had considered using parrafin wax for the swaging process if the 45-45-10 will not remain on the pellets while swaging, but I feel it would be harder to clean off of the pellets before coating them with the 45-45-10 formula than the SCJohnsons Paste Wax...Your thoughts? Thanks FC45LC, agw.

AirGunWarriors - We've added color to our bullet lubes for many years just by throwing in bright color crayons. But the coating from the 45/45/10 is way too thin to get much color. If you want colorful bullets, best way is to either Epoxy or Powder Coat your cast bullets, but the work and mess is mega compared to the 45/45/10 (can't beat a total of 10 minutes spent lubing 1000 bullets). I find the "case hardened" look of 45/45/10 is a nice effect... Have a great day
