Powder Coating And Sizing The Fine Economical Lee 358 158 FP Cast Bullets

Фильм және анимация

After bullets are cast and before they can be loaded, sizing and lubricating must be done. In this video, we will choose powder coating as our preferred method of lubrication followed by the sizing procedure....

    Remember the old days when reloading and you might drop a primer, like a penny, and think, "Oh, I'll just pick that up later!" Now, when you drop a primer you are down on your hands and knees with a magnifying glass like it was a lost contact lens!

It looked like you were using forceps to place stand your bullets up and I wanted to share my experience of having very good results with standing mine up using my black nitrile gloved fingers. No bare spots and of course much easier to manipulate the boolits by hand. Good luck. Actually, the blue ones work just as well too.

Looks like the price has gone back up to $36 (still good) on that one. But the 6cav 158 swc gas check mold is on sale for $24! But who uses gas checks anymore? Ha

    Hello to spyderxtra777..!!! I've actually been getting interested in the RN bullets again, because there's a range up in WA state that has steel targets. RN bullets have general utilitarian use including ringing steel, but not as much for hunting (of course, they will do as lots of buffalo were taken with RN). I won't buy that SWC 158 GC mold from Lee though, not because of the GC design (they can be shot without the GC), but because of the narrow top driving band. That band lacks the strength necessary to take the forcing cone and rifling with high velocity loadings - OK for standard velocity, but then why the GC? There is a corresponding mold like that in 44 cal - I never bought that one either same reason - TL designs don't fall into that because the TL grooves are so shallow, the top driving band is not undercut by them. That RN mold you just got on sale should be a dandy. Good casting' to ya, Steve

    👍👍 @FortuneCookie45LC , I just posted a comment on your Honk Kong pork chops video about my Lee Lead Hardness hack, that costs NOTHING but the things us loaders have on hand already. I use my Lee .452 bullet sizer, some tape, and O Rings(O RINGS aren’t necessary)! I take the LEE SCOPE that comes with Hardness kit, wrap a couple of wraps of tape around it, to make it snug in my .452” sizer and to protect the scope and die. I put a O RING on the top side of scope to help hold the scope in the die where I want it( YOU CAN USE JUST TAPE TOO), place the scope through the die in position I want it, then I place another ORING on the bottom side of the scope, also to help keep the scope where I want it. Then just put the die in the press, turret press works great, you can have the Lee hardness indenter in one position, and the scope die in another, punch your lead, switch turret, use scope, and Voila!!! No headache trying to hold that shaky scope, bullet, and light steady. And BEST THING IT COSTS NOTHING, EXCEPT THINGS WE ALREADY HAVE ON HAND!! Please do a video on this hack COOKIE, I’d really like to get the word out and make a hassle a breeze for NOTHING but a few minutes of time!

I'll figure it out, but right at the MOMENT I am totally OUT of small pistol primers (1st time in my LIFE)...

    Rob - We will all be out of primers if this keeps going. You will know we are all getting desperate when we are using SP magnum primers. Hopefully, when the supply chain "problems" clear up, and the new primer manufacturing plant is in full production, we'll have primers. As for the supply chain "problem" - it's all a crock. Recall that in WWII, big part of winning that conflict was we stretched our supply lines all the way across Europe and all the way across the Pacific so that supplies were amassed for the invasion of Japan mainland. When the explanation for our current supply issues was asked, the answer, "You need to go ask Fed-Ex" is a simple lie. No one is bothering to bring up the current supply of weapons to Ukraine war. Where's the supply chain problem there? All the astute media reporters might bother to ask unless they are fish. The fact that there is any supply chain problem to our people across America is because the current admin wants the American people to suffer in nearly every way. Giving us all that printed money just smokescreened all the other spending on the agenda issues by taxing all the people with the inflation tax - then lie to us about it all. Giving us money just gets votes, but taxing us by the hidden back door is not seen by enough voters to keep power - easy when the media helps the lies. All politicians lie, but not all politicians benefit the people. Wow, there's an original quote for you. Best to ya, Rob. - Steve

    Hard to argue with your results, but I noticed you are not using any nylon balls in with the powder to help generate static to stick the powder. I've tried both ways and seem to get better results with the Crosman black air soft BB in with my powder. This with using Eastwood Hotcoat powders. I should also mention that I'm using pure soft lead for airguns, the harder alloys can have trouble embossing the rifling at the low pressures in an airgun. With the soft lead these air soft BB also help prevent dents in the bullets when shaking. We have also determined that you generally get better results if the plastic container has the #5 recycling stamped in it, other plastics don't seem to generate, or may dissipate the charge. Lastly, a question... Do you have a list of powders that work and powders that do not? The Eastwood yellow has not worked for me, no matter what I do I get lots of bare spots after baking, but they looked good before baking. What I want to do is color code different weight bullets, I have one NOE design that has multiple hollow point inserts, from 88 grain down to 84 grain. I also have a Lyman design in both flat (155gr) and hollow point (125gr Devastator) and would like to color code those.

  • @FortuneCookie45LC

    @FortuneCookie45LC

    2 жыл бұрын

    jwgbmp40 - Sinzing our 38 cal cast bullets to .358" works for our 38 Spl / 357s almost across the board. Reason is that our revolver cylinder throats are usually .357 - .358". 1) we generally want our cast bullets to be .001" bigger than cylinder throats. 2) Lee Precision actually recommends a general rule to size our cast bullets .001" bigger than common jacketed bullets for the caliber - 38 Spl / 357 jacketed bullets are commonly .357", hence we can generally size our bullets to .358" 3) most commercial cast. bullet makers provide their 38 cal bullets at .358", Matt's Bullets actually provide .359", but will give us .358" if we request. The cylinder throats are the important factor on the size of our cast bullets. If revolvers are set up properly, the barrel groove diameter will be smaller than the cylinder throats so that obturation of cast bulletas is assured. If we shoot cast smaller than the cylinder throats, gas cutting will lead the forcing cone and first 1 - 1 1/2" of barrel ruining accuracy after the first dozen or so shots. Jacketed bullets will not gas cut so they can be shot smaller and will "slug up" in the barrel to shoot just fine in most cases. Revolver accuracy is provided by 1) proper headspace 2) lockup alignment of each cylinder to the barrel axis 3) timing of action 4) quality of the lockup 5) proper flash gap 5) quality of the barrel (includes barrel finish - some barrels still have machining marks in there; if there are any constrictions, that's bad for accuracy; some fine revolvers like Colt Pythons had barrel down taper by .001" to the muzzle) 6) bullets properly fitted to the gun. Note that the degree of error present in each can override the importance of each in the order of significance to accuracy. Then of course, the quality of the shooter - some factories get complaints of their guns shooting poorly, but the shooter couldn't hit the n'ar side of the barn. Now the Marlin micro groove barrels are a wild card to the .358". Most micro groove barrels require bigger bullets to shoot well - perhaps that's why Matt's does the .359" as there are so many Marlin 1894s around with those infernal MG barrels. Best to ya, Steve

    Jeff - I have a great place to cast - between houses where the wind funnels through and takes fumes directly away from me. On windless days, I use a good electric fan. You do have to protect yourself against the dust if you collect range scrap. A big part of lead exposure for shooters is 1) indoor ranges 2) dry tumbling of brass - dry tumbling causes lead contaminated dust that is raised when handling the tumbler, and then that dust is on our brass when we reload - wet tumbling has eliminated that and should be much stressed - a lot of reloaders are still dry tumbling - but less all the time as the word gets out 3) Lead gathering - watch out for dust in range scrap and in berms where bullets might be gathered - also, beware of getting lead that has colorful dust on it - all of that yellow, dark, or even white dust is various lead oxides that used to be used to color paints - lead oxides are also in the dross we skim off our molten lead. Dispose of that carefully (we see a lot of skim dross just tapped off onto flat surfaces scattering lead oxide - We want to put that molten dross into containers and take then to the waste disposal sites without undue delay - storing that stuff is a no-go). If we use ventilation to our advantage, wear eye protection, any kind of mask, and do not touch our face or head, wear our casting gloves, clothes in the wash, shower after casting sessions, and avoid indoor ranges (sparingly with new shooters is OK) we'll be OK with our shooting, casting and reloading. Look at all those folks who used to be under lead in plumbing, roofs, paints, cosmetics, glass, printing industry, gasoline, and asbestos in kitchen pads, fireproof suits, ceiling coating, brake shoes. Sure, get rid of all that bad stuff, but those folks put men on the moon, developed computers, lived full lives. Elmer Keith casted in his kitchen, Skeeter casted at work. People live a few years longer today because of medical technology and medicines. If a person has bad genes, they are not destined to have long lives. It's what we do with our time on earth that will be the difference. Good shootin' to ya, Jeff... Steve.
