$6.50 an hour is disgusting. I was making 21 an hour and I was fresh and new in the hospitality market, she should be at least making 30 an hour if she is the head cook there.

30 years ago. Food svc workers don't make a lot of cash. That was her starting wage. What was her wage at the time of interview. How many times did she give her cash money that she did not report on her tax forms? Why didn't she quit? In the partnership she speaks of, how much money did she put in upfront? Why would her co-workers think she lives in a mansion? Not a fan of PD,,,,,,I am from the South. I don't know anyone that talks like that. I grew up around old ladies that talked like that back in the 1960's.

She was not lying. Did you notice that the interviewer said at the time of this interview she was still working for Paula Deen. She was trying to be careful of what she said, plus she was weighing out her words as to not incur a lawsuit for slander. Really, people as much as I use to like Paula, it's clear she stole this woman's recipes and did not compensate her for them and tried to pass it off like she created them. But what do you expect? Need I say more...

People hear only what they want to hear and pull things from the clouds to try justifying something that is wrong. She was being careful of her words as not to get herself into trouble. Some ask the question"why would you stay so long if it was that bad"? Sometimes a person feels like that's all they have. I feel as if she was still holding on to the dream that Paula sold her. $6.50 an HR, I believe she paid her that. People get to the top and can forget everyone else. It is what it is.

  • @iamblessed513

First, when this interview was conducted she was still working for Paula Deen. How would you have answered if you were still working for your boss and was still on payroll? Again, she was being careful with her words because I am sure she had bills to pay. Second, I never said Paula was racist...you did! However, I feel Paula has put herself in a category where she feels entitled over other people. This woman was supposedly Paula's friend for over 20 years, helped Paula to become successful using a majority of her family recipes, helped Paula grow her empire and she ended up living in a trailer and at the end was given a settlement of $70,000! Oh please Paula cheated this woman who believed Paula was her friend however Paula had ulterior motives. She knew this woman could cook and Paula was determined to create a career for herself. Remember the old saying " keep you friend close, but your enemies closer" well Paula kept her close enough to get what she needed. Smiling and grinning all the way to the bank. Oh Dora, you such a good friend cuz you stupid to the fact that I am using your recipes to build security and wealth for me and my family generation to generation. Paula Deen knew exactly what she was doing and Dora didn't know the wiser. She truly believed Paula was her friend. Harriet Tubman said it best " I would have freed a lot more slaves if only they knew they were slaves".

I can't speak in her being racist. Maybe she is maybe she isn't. But I know an opportunist when I see one and she is definitely one. Only Dora and other staff can account for her being a racist. Like I mentioned earlier I liked Paula Deen's show and actually made a trip to Savannah specifically to go to her restaurant because I am a foodie. I will tell you everybody and I mean everyone working there was black and we had to wait across the street until a lady came out and rang a big bell announcing the restaurant was open and we could come in. Does that make her racist? No. But being from the deep south I am sure she inherited personality characteristics of her upbringing.

T ESL Southern cookin, to me, is a beautiful blend of fresh picked ingredients and impoverished necessities. Cornbread... Native American staple in multiple cultures (I live between 2 former Cherokee reservations), though you will find the seasoning differs. I personally hate sweet Georgia cornbread. It’s unnatural and an affront to... tongues. 😁 I get it because the sugar was a pick me up (especially for the babies) added to other dishes here. You saw it more commonly with grits. My mom loved to crumble it in buttermilk and eat it with a spoon. Yourne?

Market/advertise yourself as Paula Deen's former cook & write a book! Especially here in the South, most white people are in denial about them being racist. They think because we're allowed to enter into the front doors, use the same water fountain, restrooms, vote, etc., that we should be satisfied. They still don't really see us as equal. They prefer to oppress by tossing us a fish, (just like she tossed you that $100 bill) rather than teach/show us how to fish. You deserve better. Stay up, glow up...LEVEL UP!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👀👂🏼✌🏼💖👑💯✔

I'm an Australian and don't pretend to know anything about the race relations in your country but Dora has an honesty and a quiet dignity about her that i trust. I have also watched lots of Paula's stuff, mostly here on KZread and i get the feeling that what Dora says is the truth. I can see Dora not wanting to keep reminding Paula of her promise to a fair share of the wealth created, largely from her toil. i mean as Dora said, lots of the other employee's think/thought that she is/was wealthy, due to working for Paula. If others thought that, then Dora obviously wasn't making a big deal about it. Nor she should have had to. All that poor woman wanted was due her. I get the impression Dora would never dare to expect great wealth, just something approaching what was fair. I can imagine Paula getting irate when Dora tried to explain that she was struggling to make ends meet on the amount of money she was being paid. Then Paula throwing that money at her, for her medications, to me shows the height of disrespect for another human being. It seems to me that sums up Paula's character, more than any name she could have called any one. I can't help but feel that Dora didn't really want to fully spill the beans on her dealings with Paula, she was still employed by her, at the time of the interview, for goodness sake. If Paula's reaction to the medication scenario is any indication of how she reacted to some one explaining their hardship (over some thing Paula herself did)then imagine the back lash over something like this. Dora might have thought she would just talk about 1 thing in the interview, however as journalists tend to do, the world over, they push and push to get that story, no matter who it hurts. i think Dora was pushed way past her comfort zone in this interview, just for the sake of the story. i just can't help but think this story didn't end that well for Dora. Just a very sad scenario all together. I just hope that some decent Restauranteur contacted Dora and snapped her right up. Just to give her a job where she is well respected and paid what she deserves.I'm not familiar with the laws on this kind of thing, in your country, (and, It may not be in Dora's character) but if it was me being treated like that, i would be seeking legal advice on it ASAP. I just hope that Paula learned something from all of the hardship springing from this. I wish Dora all the very best going forward.

Now she’s living the dream this woman living in a trailer “ All that hard work” for someone else’s success story 🙄 God doesn’t like ugliest …Paula is wrong!

nobody held a gun to her head and made her stay there. all those years, she could've been putting money away instead of having children and saved up sone capital to branch off. could've sold Paula or her sons a share. it's nobody's fault but hers. one-sided-interview

I see you are a person that stereotypes others without even really knowing the REAL truth. Here in the south we have learned in over 160 years that blacks are excellent actress and good liars. This you don't know about them I can tell

If Dora had issues with Paula why didn't she quit working for the restaurant or fight for her fair share when supposedly Paula became famous and rich? Why say something when Paula is facing all these downfalls? Also, if Dora Charles says, 'Paula passed her $100 (instead of handing it politely like Paula should have) for her medicine then why didn't Dora say no thanks and quit'? Why continue to be treatrd that way? No one deserves to be treated that way. Her story does not add up sorry. I'm a huge fan of Paula Deen. Though she did say racial slurs does not make her a bad individual because everyone is racist one way or another. No one's perfect. I truly hope this issue with her and Dora is resolved and there is no bad blood.

wwediva831 not everyone is racist in one way or another. Some people are not racist at all. Don't assume anyone's choice if you don't know it. I am 100% not racist. I never use racial slurs on my friends even as a friendly joke.

LoisyVoicy I agree with what you are saying. But being racist doesn't just have to with an individual's skin color it also, can be other things such as lying and stealing.

Absolutely brought me to tears, I know life's tough but you can't keep climbing stepping on people's backs to get yours and not give back. Paula Deen has exploited black people for years and hopefully she's getting what she deserves. Not wishing violence on Deen but she definitely should lose all tolerance anyone has given her and should suffer greatly.

Isn't it interesting how she was content and even proud to be working with Paula Deen. Then, she began to feel entitled to more. The pay she was making was the going rate at that time. She sees dollar signs.

Where are the facts. She could say anything. Not that I don’t believe her but I’d keep paperwork and receipts and if she didn’t sign any contracts etc. She is owed nothing. No one ever deserves anything. Paula got rich off her show and the food network deals.

Something about her story has always bothered me. I don’t know that it’s totally believable, and she wasn’t just trying to capitalize on Paula’s downfall. Also, she stated to be only making $6.50/ hour when Paula started her food network show. That would have been in 1999, and was a pretty comparable wage for that time.
