The significance of Leaves From the Vine makes it much more emotional to hear it. The voice actor for Iroh, Mako Iwamatsu, had throat cancer and died before finishing his work on the show. Singing this song was actually hurting him, physically and emotionally, knowing his time was coming to an end. It’s said that people outside the recording booth were crying while he sang. The new voice actor for Iroh in book 3 said he’s often asked to sing leaves from the vine at fan conventions but always denies, saying it’s Mako’s song. In the Legend of Korra, the sequel series to The Last Airbender, one of the main characters is a fire bender named Mako, after Irohs voice actor.

Same as a 6'5" bearded adult. His story is beautiful and tragic and that is what makes this show so special, everyone has such a complex and realistic background and there is so much to relate to for anyone of any age. I watched this show with both of my nephews and I plan to watch it with my kids when I have some.
Makes it more sad when you realize that Uncle Iroh helps a small child, an older boy, and a young man. Each symbolizing a part of his son’s life before he died.

uncle iroh is the epitome of what it means to be a real man. but honestly, all of us--men and women both, we should all strive to be more like him as we grow older and wiser. many people become stagnant as they age. they get stuck in their ways, rigid and closed-minded in their beliefs. they develop that 'can't teach an old dog new tricks' mentality. but iroh is the opposite of that.

@@counterchicken7230That's definitely true, but I feel like there's value in specifically saying that Iroh is an example of good masculinity. The Fire Nation has so many examples of toxic masculinity (early Zuko, Ozai, Sozin), and it's reflected in their bending technique (using anger). So it's nice to have Iroh contrast that as a positive fatherly figure.

It's complicated because he would be lying to her if he tried to go out with her. He's living under a false identity, his name isn't Lee, he's not an Earth Kingdom refugee, he doesn't want to live the life he's living at the moment, etc. Not to mention he literally just told her that he was part of the circus lmao. Everything he's told her is a lie, so I would imagine he doesn't want to drag her into the lies he's been telling her.

I've seen people point out that in The Tale of Iroh, Iroh is reliving the experience of being a father: he helps a crying child calm down, then he teaches a group of teenagers to take responsibility but also to not let others knock you down because of a dumb mistake, and finally he teaches a young man to believe in himself and turn his life around because it's never too late. Things he's done (or wishes he had done) for Lu Ten.
It's a shame the others are missing for these two episodes. Tales of Ba Sing Se and Appa's lost days are among my top episodes in this series. way above season 2 finale.
RIP Mako (OG voice of Iroh). Still the most poignant send-off to a legendary voice actor I've ever seen. Iroh undisputedly the GOAT.
Irohs sons picture is actually a portrait of Irohs va in his younger days, and the va started crying singing the song cause he had cancer

Gotta feel bad for Jin's back having to carry that date with Zuko on her own lol
5:00 Haha she was like "OK, tear control. You're crying. You're almost crying. Shit, I'm about to cry myself!" 🤣🤣
As a grown ass man Iroh's tale gets me every time
Idk if anyone notices but during the iroh scene, it shows how he’s always there for a boys upbringing. From toddler, to a child, then to a young adult.
I like how the two guys just look at the camera in Iroh’s Tale it’s like- I felt that 😢
Sometimes you just need a good cry. The Tale of Iroh is perfect for that.
It is nice to see some emotions from the reaction panel... Let it out Maddie.. we've all been there... Leaves From the Vine never fails to cut onions 🧅
Sokka didn't need a big part. he already had some of the most substantial character development throughout the series and especially in season 2 also, Momo is a mix of Lemur and Bat (giant ears, membrane wings) also, Aang is 12 and Zuko is 16. thats not relatively the same age, thats a difference of 33%. Aang basically has barely started puberty while Zuko is already pretty far into it. Aang is actually the character that acts his age the most (and even then he is way more mature than IRL 12 year olds). Add to that the fact that he has all that pressure of being the Avatar and it kinda makes sense why he would want to enjoy his freedom as much as he can.
That song that Iroh sings was the last thing that Mako (Iroh's OG voice actor) recorded before his death. A sound alike was cast for any un-recorded scenes.

Been waiting for this episode 😁 Iroh's tale makes everyone emotional, especially on first watch.
Iroh's ep was amazing, Zuko's was really nice character development, kind of smooths out his rough exterior.
This get mentioned all the time, but when Katara tells Toph she's pretty Toph would've known if she was lying, so she knew Katara was telling the truth. I've always thought that was sweet.
The moment they said “we love Iroh”, I could see the water works really coming
Mako, the voice actor for Iroh, was sadly dying from cancer when he sung "Leaves from the vine." It's why his performance why so emotional :(
I think the difference in Aand and Zuko’s personalities is largely affected by Aang beinf 12 yo and was more sheltered about the war as it wasn’t concentrated on the Air Nomads yet then he felt he went to sleep and just woke up but in reality it was a century later, while Zuko is 16 here and had grown up knowing about the war and was also banished earlier on in his life. Plus the difference in cultures of the nomads and fire nation too
I still cry, every time I watch, every time I watch someone else watch it. The conditions don't matter. If I hear that song it's curtains.
Remember when Iroh was mad at Jhao? That was a sight to behold.
I need to make a pause during your video after the tale of Iroh to let me time stop crying (again). The tale of Momo is sad too but Iroh's one has another meaning, in honor of Mako, Iroh's first voice actor
Man Iroh is such an amazing character and has such a sad backstory!
I can’t wait for the whole crew to be back! I always sit and wait for these episodes to come out. I’ve been enjoying this series a lot. As a huge avatar nerd y’all are great. Also Momo is a “lemur bat” btw.
Iroh is such a good character to look up to. So wholesome as he can be to everyone. Always hurts to see him sad here
Everybody gangster until Iroh begins singing leaves from the vine
I always tear up hearing Mako sing Leaves from the Vine. What a legendary voice. Rest in peace, Mako.
The first part of this episode with uncle Iroh was originally voiced by Maco who died after this episode due to a chronic illness/cancer. It is said he was actually crying for real in this episode and the picture of his son was an actual photograph of a younger version of himself.
Leaves from the Vines, falling so slow, like tiny fragile shells, drifting in the Foam. Little Soldier boy, comes Marching Home, Brave Soldier Boy, comes Marching Home... *Sniff* this will never not make me cry...
Jjk coming any time soon? Ive been dying to wait for your reaction:D
I've typed this for other reactors, Toph's toughness and aloof, sarcastic attitude is a mask. She thinks that to be strong, you can't show vulnerability. She is always looking to prove herself by rebelling against her parents' obsession with appearances and status and their view that she is fragile due to her being a girl, being smaller, being blind, etc. Plus, I imagine she had experienced childish teasing whenever she'd sneak out and explore the town. Toph keeps herself guarded, we've seen that just interacting with our group in recent eps.
Uncle Iroh's segment broke me and solidified me as a fan of this show.
Haven’t started the video yet and already crying 😂
I genuinely shipped Jin and zuko after I watched this ep

After the original actor for Iroh passed away. They didn't have another actor till he was in prison. The studio didn't let the other actors see the new guy till after his first lines. The actor for Zuko cried after hearing his voice.

I’ve been waiting for this episode to see Maddie’s reaction! Just cuz I’ll join in with the crying 😿
Possibly my favorite episode. It has some competition, but arguably it is the hardest hitting, along with the next one.
I bet Iroh wasn't always the lovable man he is today, when his son was alive he probably was a gentler yet similar person to his brother. He was bred for conquest and ruling, but losing his son gave him perspective on what's really important in life.
Loving the Utah Jazz shirt!
I love how we all just watch these because we’ve all felt the same emotions😂
the first time Leaves From the Vine starts playing The one's who've seen Avatar before: play it cool play it cool don'tcrydon'tcrydon'tcry
I really enjoy the reactions of mcays sister :) good guest choice
Makes one wonder if the reason he's always so kind and helpful to others is because he wasn't able to help his own son...Notice how Iroh also basically helped each person at different stages of their lives. Almost like he's growing up with his son again 😢 "Leaves from the vine" also killed me! At first it was such a happy song Iroh used to cheer up a crying boy ...and then it turned into a tragic sad song dedicated to his late son on his birthday. Then of course, that "In honor of Mako" bit really hurt my heart. Rest in peace, Mako. Thank you for bringing Uncle Iroh to life and bestowing many inspiring and wise life lessons to us. If you were wondering what the writing on the picture said, it roughly translated to: "To General Iroh: See you after we win the War. Your loyal son, Lu Ten"
I didn’t even know the show had haters.
If leaves from the vine doesnt make you cry your heartless.
Dang doing this and appas lost days without everyone is a huuuuge missed opportunity
We all cry for this
Tale of uncle iroh is making me tearbend😭😭😭
point of order... Toph sees through her feet... when they are scrubbing them, it's like if they were scrubbing her eyeballs (well.. maybe not that bad, but it does make her effectively more blind than ever)

@StudioGek This is super random and weird but around 10:23 after she says “they’re staying there indefinitely…so I don’t-“ What is that tiny white dot that flies across the screen in front of Carter like SUPERRRR FAST?!! It kind of appears out of nowhere over his shoulder closest to Canon and then flies at the ottoman. I thought I was going crazy I rewound it like 10 times. I thought maybe a bug? But just looks too fast.
Zuko’s awkwardness is a combination of a few things, I think. As a prince, his early childhood was pretty sheltered, and as far as we know he didn’t have any similarly-aged friends like Azula did. Then there was the Massive Trauma of his father disfiguring and banishing him. In pre-Agni kai flashbacks we see that he wasn’t always so quick to anger, so it’s probably safe to assume that’s a symptom of what we would call untreated PTSD in real life. He’s been banished for three years, which is most of his adolescence, and most of that time has been spent on a ship surrounded by adults who (begrudgingly) followed his orders. Then he got blown up and became a fugitive. The only healthy, stable relationships Zuko has ever had have been his mother and Uncle Iroh. He’s a teenager, trying to be an adult, trying to *survive*, and he has no idea how to act like a normal teenage boy. One of the more common tags for fanfics about Zuko is “Zuko is an awkward turtleduck.” He’s a mess and I love him.
